Assignment I (2016 – 2017)

Due in class on Sept 30 2016

(b) frying an egg
(c) grinding wheat into flour
(d) tooth decay

2. Fill in the gaps in the following table

181 244
Symbol Ta Pu2-
Protons 40
Neutrons 60 51
Electrons 34 36
Mass no. 81
Net charge 0 0 +2 -1

3. An element discovered on a distant planet called Karrium has three naturally

occurring isotopes, Karrium-354 (atomic mass = 354.1412 a.m.u., abundance =
10.8503%), Karrium-356 (atomic mass = 356.0349, abundance = 85.7496%),
Karrium-359 (atomic mass = 358.8349, abundance = 3.4001%). Calculate the
average atomic mass of Karrium with the correct number of significant numbers.

4. (a) Using Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, calculate the uncertainty in the

position of my 100-kg grandma moving at a speed of 0.20 m/s. The mass
measurement is assumed to be exact, but the speed is known only to within 
0.02 m/s.
(b) Comparing with the width of her 3-cm eyelid, is this uncertainty in position
large or small?

5. (a) Calculate the uncertainty in the position of an electron moving at a speed of

1×106 m/s. If the uncertainty in speed is 1%, what is the uncertainty in position?
The mass of an electron is 9.11×10-28 g
(b) By comparing the uncertainty in position with the radius of an electron 3×10-
15
m, can you pinpoint the location of the electron?

6. (a)What are the names of the ions and the charges in Fe(OH)2?
(b)What is the (ionic) compound name of Fe(OH)2?
(c)What is the chemical formula for the ionic compound formed by aluminum ion
and dichromate ion?

1
7. Write down the electron configurations for (a) Kr (b) Pr (c) I˗

8. Determine if the following sets of quantum numbers are valid or not. If not, state
the problematic quantum number(s):
(a) n = 4, l = 3, ml = -3, ms = 0
(b) n = 5, l = 5, ml = -2, ms = 1/2
(c) n = 99, l = 90, ml = 68, ms = -1/2

9. The amount of energy released when an electron adds to a neutral atom to give a
negative ion is called the atom’s electron affinity. Which would you expect to have
the more positive electron affinity, Na or F? Explain.

10. (MC) Screening of the nuclear charge by core electrons in atoms is ________.
A) less efficient than that by valence electrons
B) more efficient than that by valence electrons
C) essentially identical to that by valence electrons
D) responsible for a general decrease in atomic radius going down a group

decrease in atomic radius going down a group

11. (MC) Atomic radius generally increases as we move ________.

A) down a group and from right to left across a period
B) up a group and from left to right across a period
C) down a group and from left to right across a period
D) up a group and from right to left across a period
E) down a group; the period position has no effect
