Building Services & Systems II

Course Outline

Lecturer: Mr .H. Wilson

Introduction

Building Services is a critical course to all programmes to do with the built environment. It
covers all essential services that are rendered in modern buildings so as to make them live
buildings. The lecturing methods lay emphasis on student-oriented class lecturers, site visits
and student conducted seminars.

Aim

The course aims to impart design skills and or knowledge on the structure, components and
operation systems of essential services that are rendered in modern buildings.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

● Evaluate design systems that maximize natural ventilation.

● Differentiate mechanical ventilation and air conditioning systems.
● Explain acoustical properties of building materials and behavior of sound in relation to
shapes of enclosed space.
● Describe different types and designs of sanitary appliances with their materials in order
to enhance design specifications.
● Assess design implications of different drainage systems.
Assessment

Assessment is done through coursework and a written examination with the following
weightings towards final examination mark:

· Coursework – made up of individual and group assignments will have a 40% weighting
towards final examination mark.

· Examination – an end of semester examination that will have a 60% weighting towards
the final examination mark.

Topics

(a) Refuse disposal systems – assess ways of collecting refuse especially in tall buildings
including refuse chutes; Garchey system and the sink grinder; final disposal including
landfills, incineration and recycling.

(b) Ventilation and air-conditioning systems – natural and mechanical ventilation

systems; types of fans and filters; duct profile; sound attenuation in ducts; different air-
conditioning systems including all air systems, air and water systems and self contained
units and their implications on design of buildings and finally choice of appropriate system.

(c) Acoustics – common terms; room acoustics; reduction of sound; sound proofing
schemes; behavior of sound in relation to shape of enclosed space and acoustical properties
of building materials.

(d) Lightning protection – causes; lightning protection systems; earth termination;

lightning protection zone; designing procedure.

(e) Soil and wastewater disposal Systems– understand common terms according to the
model building bye-law; study various materials used for sanitary fittings with their
properties; sanitary fittings in buildings with their implications on building designs; loss of
seals in traps; prevention to lose of seals and finally systems used to discharge effluent from
buildings..
