CADMIUM PLATED OR PHOSPHATED METALS SURFACE TREATMENT — REPAIRS

1. Cadmium Plated or Phosphated Metals — Surface Treatment
A. Procedure
CAUTION: STEEL PARTS HEAT TREATED TO 160 KSI AND ABOVE ARE SUBJECT TO
HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT WHEN SUBJECTED TO PLATING RELATED
OPERATIONS. LOW HYDROGEN CADMIUM PLATING SHALL BE USED ON
COMPONENTS FROM 160 - 200 KSI. VACUUM PLATING SHALL BE USED ON
STEEL HEAT TREATED TO ABOVE 200 KSI REQUIRING CADMIUM PLATING.
(1) Rework of cadmium plated surfaces implies a break in plated surface and exposure of base
metal.
(2) Surface treatment should be to replate base metal, utilizing a low hydrogen embrittlement
process.
(3) Major rework of steel requires stripping by mechanical methods, baking, replating and rebaking
per QQ-P-416.
(4) A phosphate coating can be applied to partially plated alloy steels that are heat treated to 180
ksi and above.
(5) Surface treatments involve application of phosphoric acid to cadmium plating only. See Alloy
Steel - Corrosion Removal, 51-13-23, Repair for treatment procedure.
(6) If cadmium plating is broken, plate before applying coating. See Step 1.A.(1) thru Step 1.A.(3).
(7) Phosphate coating of alloy steels heat treated to 180 ksi and below is applied instead of plating
to areas inaccessible to plating such as inside of tubing, sharp bends, etc.
