ABSTRACT

The natural or man made fabrics as such after production are

harsh and lack the suppleness and flexibility to easily fit
around the contours of the body while wearing. There are
chemicals called fabric softeners, which on treatment to the
fabrics give them suppleness and wearing comfort. Fabric
softeners play a major role in imparting softness, ease of
ironing, wrinkle reduction, mechanical resistance and water
absorbency to the fabric.
INTRODUCTION
Fabric softener is a laundry product designed to make
clothes feel softer, reduce static cling, and impart a
pleasant scent. It's typically used during the rinse cycle of a
washing machine or added to the dryer. Fabric softeners
work by coating fabrics with a thin layer of chemicals that
lubricate the fibers, making them feel smoother and
reducing friction. They also help to prevent wrinkles and
make ironing easier. Fabric softeners come in various
forms, including liquid, sheets, beads, and dryer bars,
offering users flexibility in how they apply them to their
laundry.
TYPES
Fabric softeners come in three types, viz. Liquid as well Sheet
form and Dry balls;

Liquid
Liquid fabric softeners offer deep conditioning of the fabrics. These
softeners goes into the washer at the final rinse and can be used in
the washer dispenser by adding them at the right time or by putting
them at the start of wash.

Sheets
Sheet type of fabric softeners can be used, in the case you don't
like adding fabric softener to the wash. These fabric softeners go
into the dryer at the beginning of drying cycle and are activated
by heat.
TYPES
Fabric softeners come in three types, viz. Liquid as well Sheet
form and Dry balls;

Dryer Balls
They are available in natural and synthetic fibres, both of which do
a good job at keeping static at bay. You can also purchase plastic
dryer balls which work to keep fabrics from clumping up, and
prevent stiffening in clothes.
HOW TO USE FABRIC SOFTENERS

Here are the three common types of fabric softeners available, and their respective
directions to use.

STEPS TO USE LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER

Locate the dispenser for the liquid fabric softener and measure the amount in
accordance with the size of the load of laundry. The label on the bottle will provide
you with this information while your washing machine’s user guide will help you
identify the dispenser (if you have any doubts). Pour the recommended amount of
fabric softener into the dispenser, load your dirty laundry into the drum, and then
adjust the washer settings.

For washing machines without a dispenser, you will have to wait till it's time for the rinse
cycle, and then manually pour in the liquid fabric softener. Allow the drum to finish filling up
before you do this. Alternatively, you can purchase dispenser balls which are intended to be
filled with the appropriate amount of liquid fabric softener, and tossed in with the laundry
before the start of the wash cycle. The dispenser ball will open on its own when the drum
starts spinning toward the end of the cycle, thereby releasing the fabric conditioner in time
for the rinse cycle.
STEPS TO USE SHEETS FABRIC SOFTENER

Under no circumstance is it advisable to load the dryer over its

recommended capacity. Along with other issues, if the dryer is too
crowded, the dryer sheet will not have space to move around, and its
effectiveness will be significantly reduced. So, the first thing you need to do
is load the appropriate amount of damp laundry into the dryer for safe and
satisfactory results.

Next, put in a single dryer sheet at the top so that it can rotate more freely.
As the dryer starts spinning, the dryer sheet may get mixed in with the
clothes, however, that needn’t be a worry if it has been placed at the top
from the beginning of the cycle.
When the dryer completes its cycle, take the
laundry out along with the dryer sheet. When
cool, store the dryer sheet in an airtight
container until its next use.
STEPS TO USE DRY BALLS FABRIC SOFTENER

Similar to using dryer sheets, load the wet laundry into the dryer first.

Typically, 2-3 dryer balls are enough for a full load of laundry, however, it is
advisable to refer to the product’s label for the recommended usage. Place
the dryer balls at the top of the drum and begin the drying cycle.

Once complete, remove and store the dryer balls for your next dryer
cycle.
HOW FABRIC SOFTENER IS MADE

Fabric Softeners are manufactured by adding first

emulsifiers and then conditioning ingredients into water.
The batch is heated and mixed and in the end a variety
of other ingredients are added as per the requirement
and choice.
ADVANTAGES

Fabric softener is a product, which is used during the laundering to

eliminate static cling and make clothes soft and its benefits are many.
For example, a fabric softener can be used to reduce static cling, as a
result of its action, the socks do not stick to sweaters when they are
taken out of the dryer. A fabric softener also helps in eliminating and
reducing wrinkles in clothes. Some materials may require ironing, but by
adding a small amount of fabric softener to your laundry, you can reduce
the wrinkles by a great amount.
CONCLUSION
Fabric softener can be a useful addition to
laundry routines, providing softer, more
comfortable clothes with reduced static cling
and a pleasant scent. However, its
effectiveness may vary depending on factors
such as fabric type, product formulation, and
personal preference. While fabric softener can
offer benefits, it's important to use it properly
and be mindful of any sensitivities or allergies
to its ingredients.
