Operation
3.13.1 Selectable waveforms
The waveform of the excitation voltage of the coil system can be selected
freely. The following variants are available to be selected for this purpose:

• Sinusoidal secondary voltage control:

The secondary signal of the coil system is kept sinusoidal by means of a
control circuit. This complies with the specifications included in the IEC
60404-2 standard regarding the Epstein measurement.

• Sinusoidal input voltage with DC component (optional)

Any DC component can be added to the sinusoidal input voltage. The
secondary voltage control is not sinusoidal

• Pulse width modulation (optional)

The exciter signal consists of unipolar or bipolar pulses with different
switch on/switch off time. This corresponds to the control of asynchronous
motors often used in practice via frequency converter with pulse width
modulation. For this option, a second amplifier is required with high
bandwidth as the signals demonstrate a very high filtering slope

• Harmonic waves
Additional signals are added to a sinusoidal basic signal the frequency of
which is an integer multiple of the basic signal. This allows to reconvert a
frequency spectrum gained by Fourier decomposition (transformation) into
the relevant signal and to use this signal as exciter signal. As the signals
with integer multiples may demonstrate very high frequencies, a second
amplifier with high band width is also required here.

• Free curves
The values of a period of the signal path are given via a text file. The
values in the text file can be freely selected allowing to display any
imaginable waveform. Using this option also requires the use of a second
amplifier, as a very high filtering slope is also possible here.

Operation
3.13.2 Selectable measuring frequencies
3 Hz to 20 k Hz in increments of 0.1 Hz

3.13.3 Selectable field strength

The maximum field strength to be reached depends on the number of
windings and the magnetic length of the coil system. For SST coils and
measuring coils for punched parts, the following standard range applies:

• Maximum field strength 10000 A/m

• Setting range 2 A/m to 10000 A/m

For the Epstein frame with 700 coils according to IEC 60404-2 the following
applies:

• Maximum field strength 30000 A/m

• Setting range 2 A/m to 30000 A/m

For other coil systems such as rings and Epstein frames for higher
frequencies, the maximum reachable field strength is lower.

3.13.4 Selectable polarisation

Note that the maximum reachable polarisation is applicable for the standard
electrical steel and dependent on the selected maximum field strength of the
device as well as the cross-sectional area and permeability of the sample.

• Setting range 1 mT to 2 T
in increments of 1 mT

• Setting tolerance better 0.1 %

The absolute setting tolerance of the polarisation depends on the accuracy of

the dimensions and determined lengths of the sample.

based on Epstein samples certified by the Federal Institute of Physics and
Metrology (PTTB).

• The measurement accuracy of the measurement device is better than 2%,

Operation
3.14 Operational principle of the measurement

For the measurement of the magnetic properties of electrical steel, a material

sample must be prepared and be exposed in an appropriate coil system to a
specific magnetic field.
The measuring coil system consists of a primary winding generating a
magnetic field which then generates the magnetic flux in the sheet steel.
The magnetic field is determined by the current, the winding and the number
of coils, as well as the magnetic length of the coil.

The number of coils and the magnetic length are specified by the geometry of
the measuring coil system.
The required current is provided by a power amplifier. The current
is measured by means of a temperature-stable, low inductance precision
resistor (shunt). As an alternative, the field can also be determined by means
of field coils.
By means of a measurement data collection system, the voltage taken is
digitised directly over an adequate number of interpolation points along the
signal path.
An automatic dynamic adjustment allows for precise voltage measurements
with a digital resolution of 14 bit.
The computer converts the measured voltage into the magnetic field strength
or the measured field of the primary current.

P. 51
Operation
3.14 Operational principle of the measurement

The magnetic flux or the polarisation is measured with another measurement

data acquisition system.
The polarisation is determined by the measurement of the voltage induced in
the secondary winding of the coil system and the voltage decoupled via a high
voltage impedance converter.

The secondary voltage is also digitised with automatic dynamic adjustment.

The conversion and integration are performed by the PC.
The parallel acquisition of the two parameters H and B
by two independent recording and acquisition systems ensures absolutely
simultaneous measurement. In this way, measurement errors caused by phase
differences are avoided.
The PC calculates all above-mentioned values from the differentiated and
integrated measurement parameters. Sources of error such as analogue
multipliers and integrators are not available.
The high level of reproducibility and the drift-free long-term stability are
ensured in this way.
Measurements according to or following the EC 60404-2 or IEC 60404-3
standards require a sinusoidal polarisation process. Hence, the secondary
voltage must also be sinusoidal.
However, the measuring coil system does not represent any linear
transmission element. Hence, a control circuit for the primary signal has to
force the shape of the secondary signal.
The control algorithm tests the secondary voltage for its waveform and
controls the power amplifier in such a way that the secondary voltage is
sinusoidal.
The control parameters are adjusted by the PC according to the coil system
and sample properties.
The target voltage is generated by a highly stable, quartz-controlled digital
signal generator.
This allows to reach a very high level of frequency and amplitude stability,
which is crucial for the achievement of such high level of setting accuracy
and precise measurements by BROCKHAUS measurement devices.
Amplitude and frequency are adjusted by the PC according to the sample data
entered via the user software (weight, density, required frequency, target
polarisation, etc.).

3.15 Block diagram

The figure shows the measurement configuration in principle.

The excitation circuit is controlled by a regulated voltage, whose waveform,
frequency and amplitude are specified by the computer.
The power amplifier feeds the primary winding of the measuring coil system.
The magnetising current is measured as voltage drop via a precision resistor
or a field coil. The corresponding output is connected to the I or H input of
the measurement device.
The voltage induced in the secondary winding of the coil system is decoupled
from the coils system via the high voltage impedance converter and then led
to the B input of the measurement data acquisition system.
The computer takes over control of the signal generator, the adjustment of the
control parameters and the compensation of the DC component on the
primary side, the settings for the processing of measurement signals as well as
the conversion of the digitised analogue measurement parameters into the
relevant physical parameters.
Operator navigation is programme-controlled.

9.1 Safety instructions for electronics

Work on electrical equipment must only be carried out by qualified

electricians with special knowledge and experience in this kind of work.
In case faults arise at the electrical power supply of the measurement device
the latter must be switched off immediately by using the main switch!
Only electricians may have access to and maintain the electrical system of the
measurement device. Always keep the cabinets locked if they are
are unattended.
Never work on live components!
Components of the measurement device that undergo inspection, maintenance or
repair work must be disconnected from the power supply.
Equipment used for enabling purposes must be secured against unintended
or automatic restart (lock fuses, block circuit breaker.)
The enabled electrical components must first be checked for the presence of
power, then earthed and short-circuited, and adjacent live components must be
isolated.
Only original fuses with prescribed current ratings must be used! Never repair or
bypass defective fuses. Only replace fuses with fuses of the same type.
Changes to the control programme may impact the safe operation. Changes to
programmes exclusively require the consent of the manufacturer.
Always make sure during repair work that changes to structural properties are not
detrimental to safety (e.g. clearance and creepage distances as well as other
clearances must not be narrowed by insulation).
If it is necessary to carry out work on live components
(only in exceptional situations!), an additional person must be
brought in who will activate the emergency switch or main switch in case of an
emergency. Only use insulated tools!
Proper earthing of the electrical system must be ensured by means of a
protective earth conductor system.
