Class: Grade 11 Avant Garde – Arts and Design

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of drawing out
patterns and themes from data
B. Performance Standard The learner is able to analyze and draw out patterns and
themes with intellectual honesty
C. Learning Competency MELC:
The learner infers and explain patterns and themes from data
D. Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:

1. Label the correct process of thematic analysis

2. Explain the importance of data analysis in real life
3. Apply the process of thematic analysis on an interview

 What do you think is the relevance of organizing
information after you gathered your data?
- After your interview, organizing data is important to
classify the responses of the participants.

Discussing new concepts and Let’s first define!

practicing new skills #1
 Interview Extract- refers to a portion or an excerpt of
the interview.
 Code – refers to the label assigned to a salient idea or
thought from the data set.
 Theme – refers to the concept that appears repeatedly
throughout the data set.
- refers to the thought pattern found within the data
set.9
- broader than code

 The researcher/s may present the gathered data through

Discussing new concepts and a thematic analysis in a tabular form. Let’s learn more
practicing new skills #2 about thematic analysis.

Thematic analysis- a method for analyzing qualitative data

that entails searching across a data set to identify, analyze, and
report repeated patterns (Braun and Clarke, 2006).

 There are two approaches in thematic analysis, the

inductive approach and deductive approach. However,
we will only focus on the inductive approach.

Inductive Approach- allowing the data to determine your

Themes.

 The teacher presents a sample interview transcript and
ask the students how theme and code differ from each
other.

PROCESS IN WRITING THEMATIC ANALYSIS

1. Transcribe your data

 If your data is in the form of audio files,
transcribe them yourself.

2. Familiarize the data

 get to know your data.

3. Do the coding process

 Say we’re researching perceptions of climate change

among conservative voters aged 50 and up. An extract
from one interview looks like this. What is the code for
the orange highlight? (Answer: Acknowledgement of
climate change)

Interview extract Codes

Personally, I’m not sure. I think the climate is - Uncertainty

changing, sure, but I don’t know why or how. -
People say you should trust the experts, but - Distrust of experts
who’s to say they don’t have their own reasons - Changing terminology
for pushing this narrative? I’m not saying
they’re wrong, I’m just saying there’s reasons
not to 100% trust them. The facts keep
changing – it used to be called global warming.

 Based on your observation, where did the codes come

from?

3|Page
 practice thematic analysis coding and create a
set of initial codes that represent the meanings
and patterns you saw in the data.
 coding is the act of labelling and organizing
data.

4. Generate the themes

 Next, we look over the codes we’ve created,
identify patterns among them, and start coming
up with themes. What is the possible theme for
the last three codes? (Answer: Misinformation)

Codes Theme

- Uncertainty Uncertainty
- Leave it to the experts
- Alternative explanations

- Changing terminology Distrust of experts

- Distrust of scientists
- Fear of government control

- Incorrect facts ________________

- Misunderstanding of science
- Biased media sources

 How is the theme generated?

5. Write up the discussion and analysis.

 Finally, we’ll write up our analysis of the data.
Like all academic texts, writing up a thematic
analysis requires an introduction to establish our
research question, aims and approach.
 include a methodology section, describing how
we collected the data (e.g. through semi-
structured interviews or open-ended survey
questions) and explaining how we conducted the
thematic analysis itself.

Developing mastery LABELING QUEST:

V. EVALUATION

Researchers, it’s your turn to try!

Seated according to your research groups, fill in the items with missing codes and themes.
Underline the common words in the interview transcript for items 3 and four. The given
code and theme will serve as your guide.
