8.03 : Eco-friendly business plan

I am a principal of a local school in Boston where we have made

numerous efforts to transition our school towards a more ecological
mode of operation. After many initiatives, we are now turning to the
subject of the cafeteria : our cafeteria serves several hundred
students per day and a large number of them do not finish their
plates, creating a large amount of waste.
To overcome this challenge, I propose setting up a hen house in the
school yard in order to raise chickens fed with food waste from the
cafeteria.

Building a hen house will be costly initially for the school. It will
require effort from volunteer students, teachers or a paid individual.
After the construction and placement of the chickens, the students
can be responsible for it, but a professional will still have to take
care of it regularly to ensure the well-being of the chickens and the
maintenance of the hen house. All this will have to be taken into
account in the school budget because we will have to assess
whether we have the means to hire someone to carry out these
tasks all year round. However, I think the benefits outweigh the
costs. Students will learn how to care for animals from a young age
and providing them with this responsibility will train them to become
more responsible. It is very important to set an example for students
by teaching them the need to implement ecological alternatives and
it is above all essential to act for the well-being of the planet by
saving our food resources.
