INTRODUCTION

1. Eggshells, often considered waste, are composed primarily of calcium carbonate.

Calcium carbonate is a compound found in limestone, chalk, and marble, and it is
known for its strength and durability. Our research delves into how incorporating
eggshells into concrete mixtures may impact various aspects of concrete
performance.

2. Concrete, being a versatile building material, constantly adapts to meet the ever-
evolving needs of the construction industry. The inclusion of unconventional
materials like eggshells represents a shift towards sustainable and resource-efficient
construction practices. Join me as we explore the fascinating world where eggshells
and concrete converge to shape the future of construction materials.
OBJECTIVES

The Following Objectives of This Project and Thesis :-

Here are some considerations and benefits associated with using eggshells in concrete:
✓ Improve Workability
✓ Reduced Environmental Impact
✓ Calcium Content
✓ Improved performance
Overall, using eggshells as an admixture in concrete presents an interesting avenue for sustainable
construction, it requires careful consideration of various factors to optimize its benefits and mitigate
potential challenges.
METHODOLOGY
METHODOLOGY
Ingredients Collection
➢ Water
Water have to Collected from the local fresh water sources. We need to make sure that there is no
dust or other debris in the water.

➢ Portland Composite Cement (PCC)

As Portland Composite Cement (PCC) we have used Shah Cement brand which is available in any
local market in Bangladesh.

➢ Aggregate
The size of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate depends upon the nature of work. The coarse
aggregate used in this experimental investigation are of nominal size 20mm.

➢ eggshell
eggshell collected from the construction sites wastes of Daffodil International University projects

METHODOLOGY

Tests on Properties of Concrete

▪ The following tests are conducted on concrete specimens to analysis its
mechanical properties like compressive strength and tensile strength etc.
➢ Compressive Strength Test
The compressive strength is carried out on specimens cylindrical
in shape of size 4’’x 8’’(100mmX200mm).

➢ Split Tensile Strength Test

Split tensile strength test is the most common procedure used to
measure the tensile strength of concrete. This test is also carried
out on specimens cylindrical in shape of size 4’’x
8’’(100mmX200mm).

CONCLUSION
➢ Firstly, the inclusion of eggshells indeed enhances the compressive strength of concrete.
Due to its high calcium content, eggshells actively participate in a chemical reaction with
cement within the concrete matrix, leading to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate. This
compound significantly strengthens and reinforces the overall structure of the concrete.

➢ However, eggshells do contribute to enhancing the durability of concrete. The organic

compounds naturally present in eggshells efficiently penetrate concrete pores, reinforcing its
resistance to water absorption. As a result, this reinforcement reduces the vulnerability of
concrete to cracking and damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles, ultimately extending its
service life.

➢ In conclusion, the incorporation of eggshells into concrete mixtures indeed offers

multifaceted benefits, encompassing improved strength, enhanced durability, and
heightened sustainability. However, it is crucial to emphasize that further research remains
imperative to determine the optimal eggshell-to-concrete ratio and refine processing
methods. These efforts are necessary to fully unlock the potential of eggshells in enhancing
the performance of concrete structures.
RECOMMENDATION
Based on the findings of the experiment, it is recommended to use a eggshell content of less than 12% to
obtain optimal strength in M15 concrete. Other recommendations for improving the strength of concrete with
eggshell include:

▪ Using a fiber content ratio of 2:3:4 or 1:1:1.5 may further enhance strength.

▪ Utilizing high-quality sand and distilled water can boost strength.

▪ Using aggregate with a maximum size of 18 mm can help reach maximal compressive strength.

▪ Opting for ready-mix concrete can result in a high-strength final product.

▪ We can use other wastes (crumb rubber, steel fiber, human hair) as well to increase the compressive and
tensile strength.
