Part 1

1. On cloudy days, why are there no noticeable shadows?

There are no noticeable shadows because the light source is indirect which means that it is not
shining and the sun will be blocked somehow. Shadows are usually formed when things are being
blocked by a direct light, like the sun. Therefore, on a cloudy day, the clouds are being blocked by the sun
so the light will be indirect and not fully shine through.

2. Define diffused light

Diffused light is a soft light with neither the intensity or glare of direct light. The light is
scattered and comes from all directions which also results in soft light and not giving off raspy shadows.
Simly, diffused light is the process of softening your light source.

3. Why would a photographer reduce hard shadows?

A photographer would reduce the use of hard shadows as it can distract the viewer from the
subject focal point. They want to create visually appealing photos so using soft light, which looks
better, will grant this result. Photographers would rather use soft light to not cause any
distractions and focus on the subject focal point.

4. How can a photographer reduce hard shadows?

Typically, photographers use umbrella lights to reduce the look of hard shadows. Umbrellas
can be used to diffuse light, letting light pass through and giving off a scattered effect. This also results in
soft light and creates a bouncing off other subjects effect.

Part 2

1. Classification of light

Classification of light can be divided into 2 subcategories; direct and indirect light. Direct light is
having your light source point directly towards the subject without getting fixed, creating hard shadows.
Indirect light is getting filtered or bounced off of an object, creating softer shadows.

2. Quality of light

Quality of light and Classification of light are interconnected. This is because direct light can be
known as hard light and indirect light can be known as soft light. This can also result in the production of
their shadows; either hard or soft.

3. Strength of light
Strength of light has 3 categories; strong, medium or light. This is determined by how much light is
being reflected by the light source. We can use the sun to predict the strength of light as well. Strong
means that you cannot look directly at the sun, medium means that it is just in between and light means
that there is not enough light.

4. Temperature of light

Light can be warm or cool, depending on the filtration of color in the composition. Warm uses
colors such as red, orange and yellow and cool uses colors such as blue and green tones.
