Assertion-Reason type questions
8. Assertion: The movement of water and dissolved salts in xylem is always upwards
Reason: The upward movement of water is due to low pressure created by transpiration.

Case-based questions
24. The figure shown below represents a common type of dialysis called as Haemodialysis.

It removes waste products from the blood, such as excess salts, and urea which are insufficiently removed
by the kidney in patients with kidney failure. During the procedure, the patient’s blood is cleaned by
filtration through a series of semi- permeable membrane before bring returned to the blood of the patients.
On the basic of this, answer the following questions:
a. What is the function of the semi-permeable lining of tubes?
b. What is the purpose of artificial kidney?
c. Which part of the nephron in human kidney serves the function of reabsorption of certain substances?

displacement reactions. In general, more reactive elements displace a less reactive element from its
compound. In all single displacement reactions, only one element displaces another element from its
compound. The displacement reaction between iron (III) oxide and powdered aluminium produces so much
heat that iron metal obtained is in molten form.
a. Give an example of displacement reaction
b. Which gas is evolved when zinc reacts with dilute sulphuric acid
