McMurray Bridge Inverter
McMurray Bridge Inverter
Apparatus Required:
1. Voltage source Inverter: It is fed with adjustable voltage from a DC source of small impedance.
2. Current source Inverter: It is fed with adjustable voltage from a DC source of high impedance.
In voltage fed inverters SCRs remain forward biased by DC source. This employs the use of forced
commutation. Forced commutation requires a pre-charged capacitor of correct polarity to turn off the
already conducting SCR. Mc-Murray is a popular technique of forced commutation and this bridge
inverter is a current commutated voltage source inverter.
Each half bridge inverter power circuit consists of main SCRs T1 & T2 and diodes D1 & D2. The
commutation circuit consists of auxiliary SCRs TA1, TA2 & DA1 & DA2, damping resistor Rd, inductor
L, and a capacitor C. The function of capacitor is to provide energy required for commutating the main
SCRs. The operation of this Inverter for mode-I, SCRs T1 and T2 are conducting and the load current
completes its path through source VS, T1, load, T2 and back to source. For mode-II, TA1 and TA2 are
triggered together for commutating main SCRs T1 and T2. For mode-III, commutating current i c in both
the circuits goes beyond load current IO , so that T1 and T2 are turned off and so on.
