Theory:

A semi-converter operates only in one quadrant. A fully controlled converter can operate in two
quadrants i.e. first and fourth quadrant. A dual converter can be operated in all four quadrants.
This converter consists of two bridge converters connected in anti-parallel. Bridge 1 converter
operates as a rectifier and Bridge 2 operates as an inverter, as long as the bridge 1 is gated. In
case bridge 1 is not gated, bridge 2 can be used as another rectifier by feeding it with single
phase AC. In that case, the direction of flow of current in the load will be reversed. This
principle is used for achieving plugging and speed reversal of DC motors. For achieving
dynamic braking, the AC o/p of second bridge is fed back to the AC supply.
The single phase dual converter can work in two modes:

1. Non-circulating current mode: In this mode only one operates at a time and carries the
load current. The firing pulses applied to the SCR of two converters are so scheduled that
only one of them operates at a time.
2. Circulating current mode: in this mode, both the converters are operated
simultaneously. Therefore, dual converter is always designed and operated in circulating
current mode.

Procedure:

1. Apply AC 230V supply to the trainer kit without connecting the motor load.
2. First check up the firing pulses for bridge 1 at test point 1 & 2 for bridge 2 at test point 3
& 4 w.r.t common ground point by varying the control knob.
3. Keep the control knob to its mid position so that the o/p voltage is almost zero.
4. Switch off the AC mains and connect the DC motor to Vout terminal.
5. Switch on the AC mains and vary the control in clockwise direction.
6. Note down the value of output voltage and speed at various steps.
7. Again bring back the control knob to its mid-position so that the motor stops.
8. Now vary the control knob to counter-clockwise direction
9. Note down the value of output voltage and speed at various steps.
10. Also observe the direction of rotation of motor and polarity of o/p voltage.
11. Plot the graph between o/p voltage and speed of DC motor.

Precautions:

1. Always keep the control knob to it mid position while using the motor load.
2. Always test the availability of the firing pulse for bridge 1 and bridge 2.
