Week 01 – 19-23 February

Application Tasks 01 – File Management


Very Important Note: Read the instructions for your practical tasks carefully step by step and do
the instructions step by step. Note that if you skip an instruction or do any instructions out of
order, it could easily ruin your whole task and you may have to start again!
Content covered:
• Browser settings
• File management skills
• Downloading & UnZipping a file
• Zipping and Uploading a file
For working from home, use the A20 and A21 How2 Additional General Material documents in
the Module Documents block in Moodle, to connect to the network storage spaces.
Tasks:
VERY IMPORTANT: If you do not THOROUGHLY master file management skills (100%), you could
easily get zero for other sections of the work covered because the submitted file is in the incorrect
location, incorrectly named or the starter file has been submitted instead of your solution file, etc.
Reminder:
COURSES folder: F:\module-code for South & George, G:\BSW1121 for 2nd Ave
SUBMISSIONS folder: S:\ for all campuses – S: used in all instructions
1. FCS Windows & File Mgt: Project 01 Submission Folder
Read ALL the points below BEFORE you start the task.
• Open the LATEST FCS Windows & File Mgt document from the Learning Material block
in Moodle – this material is new. Although it has been reviewed, there may be errors that we
have missed, so please make sure that you open the LATEST version from Moodle each
time.
• Complete Project 01 Submission Folder (page 27) – check the page number at the bottom
of the page.
2. FCS Windows & File Mgt: Project 02 Compression
• Open the LATEST FCS Windows & File Mgt document from the Learning Material block
in Moodle – this material is new. Although it has been reviewed, there may be errors that we
have missed, so please make sure that you open the LATEST version from Moodle each
time.
• Complete Project 02 Compression (page 28) – check the page numbers at the bottom of
the page.
• Save your exercise documents in your S:\module-code\Weekly Tasks\Week 01 File
Management folder created in Project 01.
3. Setting up your Browser to Make your Tasks Easier - Optional task for those using HOME
Laptops ONLY:
a. Open Google Chrome Internet browser – this is the primary browser recommended for use
in this course, as the various online software apps that are used, work better using this
browser than many others.

b. Creating quick access to an often-used site in your browser (called a Bookmark or
Favourite). To quickly access iLearn Moodle (without going through the Student Portal first
every single time), open your browser of choice and type:
https://learn.mandela.ac.za/login/index.php
(or Ctrl-click on the link in this document). Once the Login page opens (also called the landing
page), do the following:

i Click on the star in the icon list at the top right of
your browser window
ii Select Add to Bookmark from the pop-up menu

iii This creates a long item on your


Favourites/Bookmarks bar (below the address
box) which you can rename to make it shorter –
right-click on the item and select Rename from
the pop-up menu

iv Type iLearn Moodle as the name (you will be


using a different Moodle site for your tests, so you
need to be able to differentiate them later)

v Click on the Bookmark or item in the Favourites

c. Change Browser Setting to control download location so that you can specify where you
want your downloaded files to be saved, rather than all of them being saved automatically in
the Library\Downloads folder.

and then page down until you find
the Downloads section and make
sure Ask where … setting is on

Iii Close the Settings page

4. T01 Weekly Test


Remember: Only attempt these tests once you have completed all the tasks in that week’s
Learning & Application Guides.
