Torque Converter Oil Flow

oil flows through the main relief valve

inlet port (A) stator shaft (1) guide
(2) pump (3).
• Rotation of pump (3) creates
centrifugal force to transmit energy
(rotate) turbine (4).
• oil from turbine (4) is directed to
stator (5) and back to pump (3) gain.

• Part of this oil passes between

turbine (4) and stator (5) and is sent
from outlet port (B) to the oil cooler.
• This oil is then used to lubricate the
transmission.

Slide 10 KT0083
Outline Of Transmission

1. The GD 655 uses a constant mesh, spur gear,

countershaft transmission with 8 forward speeds
and 4 reverse speeds.

2. The transmission selects one directional and

one speed clutch by fixing the clutch discs and
plates to the various shafts
• The clutch packs are engaged using oil
pressure and controlled by the transmission
controller and ECMV’s

3. Power flow through the transmission:

input shaft – a combination of one of the
following FL, FH, R clutches and one of
the 4 speed clutches - Output shaft

Slide 15 KT0083
Clutch Engaged

Pressure Oil moves piston 2 right. Plates and disc 3 and 4 are pressed together.
The driving discs now drive the driven discs. Shaft 1and gear 5 now rotate together
Slide 16 KT0083
Clutch is Disengaged

When the ECM is shut off. Oil on back side of piston is sent to drain. Springs 7 force
plates and discs apart. Shaft 1 and gear 5 are now independent of each other
Slide 17 KT0083
Forward First Speed (power flow)

• Two clutches are engaged

• FL Clutch and 1st clutch
• Using this combination of
clutches Forward First
gear speed is carried out.

Part Number
714-23-15600
there are 7 used

Slide 22 KT0083
ECMV For Lockup Clutch

Same part number as

used on transmission
clutch valve

Current is not supplied to

solenoid 1 when traveling in
torque converter drive.
Pressure control valve (3)
directs oil to (T) drain.
The lockup clutch is
released".
Fill switch (5) is turned
"OFF"

Slide 23 KT0083
Operation of ECMV

Slide 24 KT0083
During Filling (range B in chart)

Current is supplied to
proportional solenoid (1),
Oil pressure, equal to solenoid
force, is applied to chamber (B)
and pushes pressure control
valve (3) left.

Result: pump port (P) and

clutch port (A) are opened and
oil starts filling the clutch.

When the clutch is filled with oil,

oil pressure detection valve (4)
is pushed right, and fill switch
(5) is turned "ON".

Slide 25 KT0083
Pressure Adjustment (Range C in chart)

The ECMV solenoid generates

thrust in proportion to the
current sent to it from the
transmission controller.

Clutch pressure is the sum of

ECMV thrust, control spring (2)
and oil pressure in clutch port.

The clutch pressure is balanced

with these two forces.

Slide 26 KT0083
Main Relief Valve and Torque Converter Relief Valve

Slide 27 KT0083
Operation of Torque Converter Relief Valve
Main Relief Valve
Set pressure: 2.47 MPa {25.2 kg/cm2}
(At rated engine speed)

Converter relief
Set pressure 9.31 kg/cm²
Slide 28 KT0083
Operation of Main Relief Valve

The oil from the hydraulic pump flows to chamber (F) through the
filter, port (C) of the relief valve and orifice (a) of main relief valve (1).

Slide 29 KT0083
Operation of Main Relief Valve

As the oil pressure in the circuit goes beyond the set pressure, the oil
conducted to chamber (F) pushes piston (2) and the resulting resisting
force pushes spool (1) leftward, opening ports (C) and (E).
Above operation conducts the oil from port (E) to the torque converter.

Slide 30 KT0083

Slide 31 KT0083

Slide 32 KT0083
Solenoid Valve for Differential Lock-up

The optional final

drive has a
differential
lockup
mechanism,
which can be
controlled with a
switch from the
operator’s seat.

Slide 33 KT0083
Optional Differential Lock

Operation (with differential lock-up)

• Power transmitted from the engine to
the transmission passes through
bevel pinion (1) and bevel gear (2).

• To shaft (3)/ (4) and sprocket (5).

• The differential is switched between

ON LOCK and (OFF) by using
hydraulic power to engage or
disengage clutch (6/7).

• When the differential lock is ON, and

the machine is traveling in (F6 - F8),
the lock-up state is automatically
canceled.
