Impact on Trade and Commerce

● Natural Gas: Bangladesh's main mineral resource, fuels power plants (accounts for over
60% in power generation) and provides cheap energy for industries (steel, fertilizer,
ceramics, textiles) making them competitive globally. It's also exported for additional
revenue.
● Coal: Less important due to natural gas, but still used in brick manufacturing and steel
production.
● Limestone: Vital for the cement industry, a major player in construction. Bangladesh
even exports clinker (an intermediate cement product) over 1 million tons every year.

Impact on Growth and Development

● Natural Gas:Easy access to natural gas fuels industries, creating jobs and boosting the
economy. Revenue from natural gas exports (over $1 billion annually) helps government
investment in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
● Coal: Coal as a backup source ensures a steady energy supply for the growing energy
needs.
● Limestone: Limestone availability is crucial for infrastructure development (roads,
bridges, buildings).
