Read Chapter 4 in Pike-Baky, M., and Blass, L. (2007) and answer the following questions.

1. Identify the cause and effect in the following sentences:


a. The football team won because they practiced a lot.
Cause: The football team practiced a lot;
Effect: they won the game.

b. She watered her flowers every day and they grew big.
Cause: She watered her flowers every day;
Effect: they grew big.

c. The ice cream melted in the hot car.


Cause: The ice cream was left in the hot car;
Effect: it melted.

2. Read the following thesis statements and decide which ones are good examples and which are not. Use the
New Points about Thesis Statements on page 73 to help you decide.

a. People from different cultures have different diets.
