DESIGN OF SINGLY -REINFORCED

RECTANGULAR SECTION

(Reinforced for Tension Only)

Presented by: Engr. CS Mantawil

Some design considerations:
a) Beam proportions: h/b = 1.5 to 2. Deep beams tend to
increase floor heights.
b) Assume h=10 to 20 % of span. Alternately,
c) Assume min thickness from ACI ( Sec 7.3)
d) Another approach is to assume a value of r in terms of rb .
For example initially assume r=0.6rb
e) Estimate beam weight. For normal-weight concrete, =23.5
kN/m
f) Selection of bars: usually bars up to #36 mm is practical. If
possible, use only one size of bars.
g) Covering. RSB must be protected from surrounding
environment (fire, corrosion). Minimum clear cover = 40 mm.
h) Min. spacing of bars (see p. 87 of McCormac, 9th Edition)
i) Always draw the final design and important details.
Design parameters
• The required strength U is expressed in
terms of factored loads. Load
combinations may be compared which
produces the maximum value. In most
cases, we take U=1.2D + 1.6L
• As a rule in strength design, fMn ≥ Mu
Some Important equations:
where

if 0.004 ≤ t < 0.005

0.25(ϵ t −ϵ ty )
ϕ=0.65+
0.00 5−ϵ ty
Other designers use the mechanical
reinforcement ratio, w:
such that

Use of tables is also sometimes convenient from practicing

designers. These tables are usually found in appendices section of
the books.
Ex 1. Design a rectangular beam for a 6.5 m simple span
if a dead load of 14.6 kN/m (excluding the beam weight)
and a live load of 29.1 kN/m are to be supported. Use
f’c = 28 MPa and fy = 420 MPa
Ex 2. A reinforced concrete simply supported
beam has a span of 9 m and is subjected to a
service uniform live load wL =24 kN/m. Design a
beam section to resist the factored bending
loads. f’c = 28 MPa and fy = 415 MPa. Initially
base your design on the ACI minimum thickness.
