AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL

COMMUNICATIONS - GENERAL

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A. Functions and characteristics
The aircraft communication system provides for:
communication between the crew members,
communication between crew members and passengers, ground stations, other aircraft or ground crew.
(1) Transmit channels
Three transmit channels are made available to both the pilot and the copilot:
the hand mike,
the boom mike,
the oxygen mask mike.
The hand mike transmits when its integral push-to-talk button is pressed in.
The boom mike or the oxygen mask mike transmits when the pilot control wheel push-to-talk button
(33R1) or the copilot control wheel push-to-talk button (33R2) is pressed in.
Through either of these transmit channels, the pilot/copilot can communicate with:
the ground stations or another aircraft through the radio communication system,
the ground crew through the intercom system,
the passengers through the cabin audio system.
Communication is provided by two HF transceivers (HF 1 and HF 2) and two VHF transceivers (VHF 1
and VHF 2).
The intercom system also provides for pilot/copilot communication.
(2) Receive channels
The pilot and the copilot have, each, two receiving devices (loudspeaker or headphones) which cannot be
selected simultaneously.
These devices provide for the reception of:
the signals transmitted by the ground stations or another aircraft (HF or VHF) or the ground beacons
(VOR/ILS, DME, MARKER, ADF),
the messages from the ground crew or the other pilot through the intercom system.

C. Description of subassemblies
(1) HF equipment
The HF equipment comprises two identical HF assemblies, HF 1 and HF 2. Each assembly comprises:

transceiver HF 1 (L110RC) or HF 2 (R110RC),

amplifier-coupler HF 1 (L140RC) or HF 2 (R140RC),
controller HF 1 (L170RC) or HF 2 (R170RC),
bridging amplifier HF 1 (L150RC) or HF 2 (R150RC).
The following are common to both systems:
antenna-tuning dual variable capacitor (190RC),
HF antenna (10RC).
This installation provides for air-to-air or air-to-ground communications in the 2 to 29.9999 MHz band.
(2) VHF equipment
The VHF equipment comprises two identical VHF assemblies: VHF 1 and VHF 2. Each assembly
comprises:
transceiver VHF 1 (L220RC) or VHF 2 (R220RC),
antenna VHF 1 (L210RC) or VHF 2 (R215RC),
RTU 1 (L230RC) or RTU 2 (R230RC).
This installation provides for air-to-air or air-to-ground communications in the 118 to 136.975 MHz band.
Refer to Collins documentation.
(3) Radio tuning units RTU 1 (L230RC) and RTU 2 (R230RC)
They provide for tuning of:
radio communication transceivers (VHF),
radio navigation transceivers (DME and ATC),
radio navigation receivers (VOR and ADF).
Via AIU 1 (L240RC) and AIU 2 (R240RC) they provide for automatic control of the loudness of the
following audio signals:
radio communication transceivers (VHF),
radio navigation transceivers (DME),
radio navigation receivers (VOR and ADF).
Refer to Collins documentation.
(4) Reversion switches "L RTU SEL" (L532RC) and "R RTU SEL" (R532RC) (A/C with RTU
4020)
"L RTU SEL" reversion switch enables:
when set to "ON", tuning of the pilot transceivers via RTU 1,
when set to "OFF", inhibition of pilot transceiver tuning via RTU 1. The pilot transceivers are then
tuned via RTU 2.
Copilot "R RTU SEL" reversion switch is functionally identical to pilot "L RTU SEL" reversion switch.
(5) Intercom control systems ICS 1 (L10RL) and ICS 2 (R10RL)
They provide for selection of the transmission and receive channels.
(6) Audio interface units AIU 1 (L240RC) and AIU 2 (R240RC)
They provide for control of the loudness of ADF, DME, NAV (VOR) and VHF audio signals.
Refer to Collins documentation.
(7) SELCAL (21RB)
SELCAL is a decoder which warns the crew of the reception of a message.
(8) Public address (20RL)
The crew can address the passengers through the PA amplifier.
