A black screen.

TITLE: RECLUSE

Title Fade to black.

The darkness is interrupted by lights popping and

flickering. A static version of "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
plays. We see a montage of empty rooms in a bunker.

A) A makeshift kitchen.

B) A living space.

C) A messy bedroom.

D) A command center.

E) A Study.

3 INT. STUDY IN BUNKER - MORNING 3

Jarod (28 years old) is working at collecting files and

writing down data. There are several vials with blue liquid
on the table along with other chemistry equipment.

Jarod holds up a vial and extracts a needle full of blue

serum.

Jarod is singing along with the music while working.

JAROD
Don't worry. Be happy. Don't worry
be happy now. WWhoooooo-ooo-oo-oo!
Don't worry. Be happy. Don't worry
be happy.

Suddenly an alarm sounds. Jarod immediately stops his work

and stumbles toward the door. He knocks over buckets and
office materials without care or concern. He moves as fast

as possible, flying down the hall.

4 INT. COMMAND CENTER - CONTINUOUS 4

Jarod stumbles into the room and rushes to look into a

display screen. A red light is flashing in time with the
alarm. Jarod flips a switch and the alarm stops.

He turns on a display and it shows several cameras pointed

at clearings around a building. He continues to scan the
cameras and finally stops on one. A group of 14 people are
walking through the jungle. They look like they have just
been through a natural disaster.

CLOSE UP ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN

The leader approaches the side of the the concrete building

and tries to pull at the main door with no success.

5 EXT. JUNGLE OUTSIDE OF BUNKER - CONTINUOUS 5

The leader notices the camera and then looks at the top of
the structure to see the the hot air emitting from the top
of the building.

TRANSIENT LEADER
(softly)
There's someone here.

He starts silently waving both arms at the camera. The whole

group follows suit, silently jumping up and down.

6 INT. COMMAND CENTER - CONTINUOUS 6

Jarod moves toward a switch next to a microphone and

hesitates. He watches the leader trying to pull at the door.
Jarod continues to watch for a moment and then turns away to
move on with his duties. The leader continues to pull at the
door.

C) Oil is poured on the hash.

D) Jarod shakes salt and pepper on the ingredients.

E) Jarod makes a plate.

F) Jarod finishes the plate, washing it down with juice.

G) Jarod finishes washing the dishes. He becomes curious and

decides to go back to check on the screen.

H) The display shows the same group of people camped

outside. They are staying put. Frustrated, Jarod turns away.

8 EXT. JUNGLE CAMP - AFTERNOON 8

The sun is lower in the sky. The group of people begin

shiver and to start a fire.

9 INT. COMMAND CENTER - CONTINUOUS 9

Jarod passes by the room and glance at the monitor. He stops

and races into the room. He sees them beginning to start a
fire. Jarod rushes to a make-shift microphone and flips a
switch.

INTERCUT:

Outside the sound of a speaker system coming on is heard.

The group is startled. A silence falls on the crowd as they
look toward the bunker.

JAROD (O.S.)
Stop that.

The crowd is startled again and stares at the speaker above

the door.

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S)

You can't build a fire here.

The crowd is speechless.

TRANSIENT LEADER
Can you hear us? Let us in. We need
help.

INTERCUT:

Jarod is beginning to become frustrated.

JAROD
You have to go.

TRANSIENT LEADER (O.S.)

Please, we have no where else to
go.

This aggravates Jarod further. He puts his head down.

One of the young crowd members, PETER - 23 years old, looks

nervous and slowly starts to sneak away from the crowd,
looking at a corner of the building that is unseen by the
security cameras.

JAROD
I can't help you.

INTERCUT:

The crowd is steadfast and somber.

INTERCUT:

Jarod is upset at the situation. His frustration builds.

JAROD
One person...

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S.)

Female only...

The crowd looks to the leader. They look hopeful and

nervous.

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S.)

Less aggression.

A woman steps forward with her toddler.

WOMAN
Take my daughter.

The crowd is silent.

(CONTINUED)

INTERCUT:

WOMAN (CONT.) (O.S.)

Please take her.

Jarod is moved by this. He gathers his emotions and exhales

from the stress.

INTERCUT:

JAROD (O.S.)
Place her in front of the door.

The woman carefully swaddles the child and places the infant
on the ground in front of the door. She starts to walk away
and the baby begins to cry.

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S)

Now everyone back up 30 paces.

A dead silence follows within the crowd.

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S)

Everyone back up, or she doesn't
come in at all!

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.)
I won't open that door until
everyone is 30 meters away.

INTERCUT:

First the woman and then all others back up.

INTERCUT:

Jarod sees this and seems to receive another swarm of

sympathy. He scrambles for a pencil and paper and begins to
calculate. After a bit he reaches for the mic.

JAROD
The woman and her child... and one
other...

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S)

Only one other. Decide now.

The crowd begins to discuss and the volume builds. The woman
races to pick up her crying baby. One estranged small boy (8
years old) wearing a red cap looks down at the ground, as
the rest bicker among themselves. The bickering continues to
grow.

JAROD (CONT.) (O.S)

STOP! The boy with the red hat. He
may enter as well.

Silence falls. The boy steps forward.

TRANSIENT LEADER
You have enough room for us all.
Please, take us in, for pity sake.

INTERCUT:

JAROD
Those three only. The supplies will
be stretched as it is.

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.)(O.S)
Or no one at all, and they can
suffer the strains of Recluse with
all of you.

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.)
That door opens for them only.

INTERCUT:

JAROD (CONT.)(O.S)
And best be quick. Our noise will
have attracted attention.

After a long stillness the boy walks towards the woman with
her baby. The woman looks at the crowd, a single tear
falling down her cheek.

The bunker door makes a noise of unbolting as the three

patiently wait.

INTERCUT:

Jarod checks the peep hole before opening the door.

Satisfied, he cracks the door open, showing the three people
standing 10 yards away. He motions them in. The crowd
watches with tension as their three members walk toward the
door.

Suddenly the red light begins flashing and the alarm sounds.
Jarod looks around becoming very tense. We hear branches
break from behind the crowd. Everyone turns toward the noise
and sees zombies racing at them with rage.

The little boy and woman carrying her baby start to run for
the bunker door, and so does the crowd. We hear gun shots.
The crowd is shooting at the approaching zombies.

Jarrod, armed with a pistol, ushers the woman with her baby
inside.

The boy trips on a stone and falls. Jarod has to make a

choice quickly. He makes a move as if to start to run for
the boy and we hear more shots fired, this time at the
bunker door, barely missing Jarod. The crowd is trying to
shoot Jarod so they can get in. Jarad returns back behind
the door to avoid being shot.

The boy gets up and continues running but is shot dead by

the crowd. Jarod is disgusted by such behavior and begins to
pull the door shut. The door is almost sealed when an arm
slides through, preventing Jarod from pulling the door
closed. It is the young man (PETER) that we saw separate
from the crowd earlier.

PETER
Please, let me in!

Jarod tries to pull the door shut hoping to break his arm.
Jarod looks at his gun and considers using it.

PETER
You said one more! You said one
more!

Jarod holsters his weapon and tries to push his arm out of

the way.

PETER
Come on, let me in or they will get
all of us.

Jarod concedes, letting Peter in. He is barely able to get

the door locked before the crowd rushes the door.

10 EXT. OUTSIDE THE BUNKER - CONTINUOUS 10

Outside the transient group tries to defend themselves with

rifles and make-shift weapons. They crouch down and shoot at
each zombie approaching. Zombies begin dropping and yet they
still are coming.

One gets through the defenses and tackles a woman reloading

her weapon. She screams in agony as she is bitten.

One of the group members shoots the zombie and then points
the gun at her. Before he can shoot her another zombie
breaks through and attacks him.

The transient leader takes control, shooting the infected

woman in the head. The other zombie he shoots in the back.
The zombie turns on him and attacks.

He finally gets a shot off and kills the zombie. He notices

that in the exchange a bite mark shows on his arm. Angry, he
rushes to the attacked man who is very scared and shoots him
in the head.

The leader continues to shoot at the zombies. Another zombie

begins to break through attacking a teenager.

INTERCUT:

Jarod and the new members listen in fear and anguish to the
dying cries and the sound of the feast occurring behind the
closed doors.

FADE IN:

12 SERIES OF SHOTS: 12

TITLE: "5 YEARS LATER"

MONTAGE - BUNKER:

Elvis's "I'm All Shook Up" is played on shaky speakers.

A) A young woman's hands makes breakfast.

B) A wheel chair is operated.

C) Bacon is sizzling on a pan.

D) Zoom out showing the kitchen and a 7 year old girl in a

wheelchair making breakfast.

13 INT: MESSY BEDROOM IN BUNKER - MORNING 13

Peter (an older version of the young man that snuck in the
beginning) wakes up groggily. Peter takes in the bacon aroma
with great happiness. He looks out of his door and
stretches.

14 INT: BUNKER STUDY - CONTINUOUS 14

Peter walks through the open doorway. Jarod is bent over

files as he carefully extracts colored fluids and fills a
syringe.

We see the rat cages with one that says on a piece of tape
"CONTROL" The rat is aggressive and deformed.

We see another cage that says "TEST 834" the rat is

completely normal.

PETER
How many hours did you get?

JAROD
Enough.

PETER
So two.

Jarod smiles. Peter moves over to a work station and starts

to prep papers and organize files.

PETER (CONT.)
It smells good.

Jarod stops and acknowledges him for this first time in the
room.

JAROD
Yes, it does.

Jarod returns to his work. Peter sits on the table that he

has cleared off. He grabs a metal slinky near by and begins
to play with it.

PETER
Let's go for an hour today. Give us
a challenge...

Jarod takes interest, but returns his focus back to his

work.

JAROD (CONT.)
You seem to be in a good mood.

Peter lies back on the table with his hands behind his head.

PETER
It's always nice to be woken up by
the smell of bacon.

Jarod stops what he is doing and addresses Peter.

JAROD
I don't want to get her hopes up.

Peter acknowledges Jarod and respectfully agrees.

PETER
I don't either.

Jarod gives a long concerned look toward Peter and then

smiles. He quickly returns to his work. Peter stares at the
ceiling, feeling less empowered.

15 INT, BREAKFAST TABLE KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS 15

The table is set with mismatched flatware and utensils.

Peter, Jarod, and Kora are sitting at the table praying
silently to themselves. Jarod peaks his eye open and Kora
catches this and smiles.

KORA
Eat up.

PETER
This is beautiful, Kora. Damn, what
has it been--6 months?--since we've
had bacon.

A silence falls and Jarod gives Peter a look.

JAROD
It's wonderful, sweetheart. Did you
get enough?

KORA
It's OK, Dad. You don't have to
worry about me. I'm fine.

Everyone returns to their enjoyable meal.

KORA (CONT.)
...In fact, I would like to help
this time.

JAROD
No.

KORA
Dad!

JAROD
No.

PETER
Jarod, she's old enough to...

JAROD
It's too dangerous!

KORA
For you too. I know you are just
trying to protect me. I appreciate
that. But...

Silence as that statement sinks in a bit.

KORA (CONT.)
I have a right to see her.

PETER
If I could add, that...

Jarod and Kora look at him with annoyance.

PETER (CONT.)
You know, I am just going to finish
this over there.

Peter gathers some more hash on his plate and awkwardly

leaves.

JAROD
Kora, it's too dangerous.

KORA
Dad, I am not a little girl any
more. I can take care of myself.

JAROD
We can't risk it. There are far too
many variables.

KORA
It's the same for me every time you
go in there!

PETER (O.S.)
You know, she does have a point...

JAROD AND KORA

Shut up!

PETER (O.S.)
Got it.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 14

KORA
We only have two weeks left before
the rations are gone.

Jarod becomes frustrated and looks away from her eyes.

KORA (CONT.)
We are all in this together. You
won't be doing me any favors if you
and Peter don't come back, leaving
me to fend for myself.

Jarod looks back at Kora, who is resolute.

KORA (CONT.)
I wan't to see her.

Jarrod sighs.

Suddenly A loud beeping noise breaks the silence. Instantly

Jarod, Peter, and Kora begin to scramble leaving the feast
on the table behind.

16 INT. COMMAND CENTER - CONTINUOUS 16

Jarod runs to check a monitor. Kora and Peter run to their

posts.

JAROD
Three hellies approaching fast!

Peter runs to a panel and begins systematically flipping

switches. Kora rolls her chair to a cabinet and begins to
prepare guns and armor. Jarod finishes shutting off several
valves and flips a switch which covers the building over
with a make-shift black tarp.

Jarod runs downstairs to meet both Peter and Kora. He begins

putting on a kevlar vest and securing a pack. He gets Kora
set in a pack designed for her to be carried on his back and
hoists her onto his shoulders.

Jarod nods to Peter and Peter walks over to a master switch.

He pulls it and the lights shut down. They reside in utter
darkness. Peter turns on a black light he is holding. The
three wait patiently.

The helicopters get louder and louder. The three all become

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 15

more tense. The helicopters begin to pass and are quieter

and quieter. After a few tense moments they all breath a
sigh of relief and look at each other.

17 INT. DUNKER COMMAND CERTER - DAY 17

All three are finishing re-establishing the building. Jarod

walks around turning back on vital support system switches.
Kora is putting the last of equipment away wanting to talk
to Jarod.

KORA
You know, it's only a matter of
time before they find us.

Peter looks to Jarod for his reaction. Jarod remains silent.

KORA (CONT.)
It doesn't even matter anyway...
Since we only have two weeks of
supplies left.

JAROD
Why do you have to remind us, huh?
Do you think I don't remember? I am
well aware of our situation.

KORA
Then understand that this could be
my only chance.

Jarod doesn't respond.

KORA (CONT.)
Everyday we become closer to
becoming outsiders ourselves.

JAROD
We are prepared. It's been long
enough now that most of them are
gone. And we don't even know if the
U.A. is exterminating anymore. It
may be safe.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 16

KORA
Dad, I know you don't believe that.
You know we won't last long out
there.

PETER
I agree with...

JAROD
Don't even start. I don't need you
encouraging this...

KORA
I want to see her.

JAROD
No.

PETER
Look, Jarod, they will find us. And
even if we survive, we still face
Recluse... Kora also. The odds
don't add up. She's right. All we
are doing is delaying the
inevitable.

JAROD
She is seven years old. She
can't...

JAROD (CONT.)
(to Kora)
I don't want to loose you...

KORA
Dad! ... I have to see her before I
can't anymore.

Jarod looks at Kora, then Peter, then back at Kora. She

stares right back at him. Realizing she is not going to
budge, Jarod sighs heavily.

18 INT: BUNKER ENTRANCE TO VAULT - DAY 18

Jarod and Kora stand in low light as Jarod straps on arm

guards and gloves. Peter is working behind them, going back
and forth, organizing supplies.

(CONTINUED)

JAROD
(to Kora)
You stay behind me the entire time.

KORA
Yep.

JAROD
No sudden movements and you don't
do anything without asking me
first.

KORA
Ok.

JAROD
If I feel like it is getting at all
dangerous and tell you to leave,
you get out immediately.

Kora nods.

JAROD (CONT)

Shut and lock the doors behind you

and don't open them no matter what.

Kora pauses at this thought.

JAROD (CONT)
Kora! Understand?

KORA
Uh, yah.

JAROD
I mean it. Otherwise I will have
Peter drag you out and leave me in
there alone.

Kora get's even more nauseous at this.

KORA
... OK.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 18

JAROD
OK.

Jarod heads toward the door. Peter has a stained medical

clear bag and tub in his hands. He walks up to Jarod.

JAROD
(To Peter)
Don't look at me. It's your turn.

Jarod grabs the bag and tube from Peter. Peter sits on an
empty chair and puts a rubber band around his arm. Jarod
grabs a needle IV out that has a piece of tape on it reading
"Peter".

PETER
I hate needles.

Jarod gets to work at extracting some of Peter's blood.

PETER
I should've ate more breakfast. I'm
eating for three you know.

KORA
(To Jarod)
I'm a bit nervous.

PETER
(jokingly)
Don't worry. We'll take good care
of you.

Jarod gives an angry look.

PETER (CONT.)
But, you should be a little
worried.

19 INT. VAULT - 15 MINS LATER 19

Jarod faces a large door that looks like a vault. Jarod

raises a mask to his mouth and lowers goggles to his eyes.

JAROD
Masks and eyewear on. Peter, you
ready?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 19

PETER
Yep, all good here.

Jarod starts to turn the lock and opens the door. Dim lights
come alive within the crack of the vault door. Jarod looks
carefully in through the door.

JAROD
They are both still restrained.

Peter and Jarod each hold a stun gun and Peter is carrying a
home made contraption that looks heavy.

Two dimly lit bodies lay on the opposite side of the vault.
The bodies are in bad shape and bloody. They are strapped to
gurneys. Jarod and Peter begin to walk closer. Kora rolls
her wheelchair in behind them. Peter shuts the door as she
passes the doorway.

Kora carries a large box in her lap behind Jarod. As they

approach suddenly both bodies begin violently convulsing.
The three stop to make sure the convulsing bodies are
adequately secured. The bodies are suppressed by the
restraints. After a moment the three continue their
approach.

PETER
(to Kora)
Place that on the table.

Kora does as instructed. The two bodies are furious now.

Kora cannot take her eyes off the female. She seems fixated
on her.

Peter gets to work and injects the male with a syringe. The
body begins to slow down and becomes tranquil. Jarod does
the same to the female. Soon both bodies are still. There is
a generator near the back and Peter starts it up. He
attaches electrodes to both bodies.

Seeing the live wires attached to the bodies concerns Kora.

Jarod recognizes this.

JAROD
It's just a precaution.

Jarod moves toward his work box and plucks a vile out and

(CONTINUED)

fills a syringe. This is the first time Kora directs her

attention on something other than the female body.

KORA
That's it?

JAROD
Yes.

KORA
What's different about it?

JAROD
It has a higher mitochondrial
oxygenation saturation and it is
encased with an antibody agent.

KORA
Do you think it will work?

Jarod and Peter look at each other. Jarod then returns his
gaze on his work.

JAROD
I don't know. But we are getting
close. The last batch had a
positive effect on the rat subject.

Kora is hopeful. Jarod indulges her.

JAROD (CONT.)
I believe Recluse can be treated by
introducing another virus. It's not
lethal but it could cause permanent
brain damage...

Kora is uneasy about the last remark. Jarod sees this and
re-draws her focus.

JAROD (CONT.)
Hey, don't worry. We are testing it
on him first.

Jarod indicates to the male. He moves to the the male's

gurney and injects the male with the neon blue serum.
Afterward Jarod begins to put the instruments away.

Peter hangs up bags of blood and connects the bags to a

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 21

feeder tube in each of two subject's stomaches. The blood

begins to drain into their digestive systems. Jarod notices
that Kora is entranced.

JAROD
The blood we give them is diluted
and has enough water content to
keep them hydrated.

Kara stays fixated on them.

JAROD (CONT.)
We won't know anything until
tomorrow.

PETER
We only have two weeks worth of
supplies left. If we stretch it
maybe three.

Kora is stressed by this statement.

JAROD
Kora, you're too close.

Suddenly the male bursts awake and rips off his left arm
restraint. He reaches for Kora and grabs her arm trying to
pull it toward his mouth. Peter jumps to attention and gets
ready to turn on the generator. Jarod pulls at the male's
hand, trying to get it off.

JAROD
Not yet, you'll electrocute Kora!

The male pulls Kora closer and closer. Blood splatters from
the male's mouth onto her face. Kora screams. Jarod is
scrambling for a self-administration tube and injects it
into the male's body. The male begins to weaken and finally
releases Kora.

PETER
They're building a tolerance to the
anesthesia!

Kora runs to the door. Peter and Jarod look at each other as
Peter re-attaches the restraint. Kora sees scratches on her

arm.

20 INT. COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT 20

Jarod is checking Kora's eyes and examining her skin. She is

freshly showered and in clean clothes. She looks rattled.

JAROD
You look fine.

KORA
Except for this.

Kora holds up her scratched wrist.

JAROD
It's just a scratch.

KORA
But you said that it can transfer
from blood... I had it all over me.

JAROD
You are fine. I already checked
your samples. I couldn't find
anything.

Jarod touches Kora on the nose with his finger and they both
smile at each other. We see him placing a vile of her blood
on the counter after he marks it with a green sharpie.

KORA
I shouldn't have gone. I should
have listened to you.

She starts crying.

JAROD
You're fine.

KORA
We only have two weeks...

JAROD
Hey it's ok.

Kora is still unconsolable.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 23

JAROD (CONT.)
Look... we are so close. We are
going to find a cure and then the
U.A. are sure to accept us. It will
be all over soon. You'll see.

Kora smiles and climbs down onto her wheelchair. She smiles
once more at Jarod and leaves the lab.

CLOSE UP ON JAROD IN DISTRESS

Jarod walks over to the blood sample and places it back

underneath the microscope.

The cells look normal except for a few on the right side
that begin shaking and contaminating the other cells.

Jarod pulls away at the sight. A look of utmost terror

resides on his face.

21 INT. BUNKER BEDROOM - NIGHT 21

Jarod and Peter are on treadmills with rucksacks on their

backs and are building quite a sweat. Jarod stops his
treadmill, pretending to be winded.

PETER
What's the matter? Getting too old.

JAROD
Ha ha. I think you're getting
stronger, that's all. Finish up the
last few minutes. I just need to
rest.

PETER
You go ahead and take a breather.
I'll do another mile for you.

JAROD
(forced smile)
Sounds great.

22 INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT 22

Frustrated, Jarod loosens his pack and begins to cry.

24

23 INT: BUNKER ENTRANCE TO VAULT - DAY 23

Jarod and Peter are preparing to go back into the vault.

Kora is in ordinary clothes. A long, tense silence.

PETER
(jokingly)
We'll be right back.

Peter notices that this didn't break up the tense mood.

PETER (CONT)
(More joking)
Look, don't worry. You will be the
first to hear of the news.

Kora smiles in appreciation of the joke.

PETER (CONT)
Don't wait up for me.

Peter moves toward the door. Jarod and Kora smile at each
other. Jarod and Kora want to say something but no words
come out.

PETER (CONT.)
All ready here, Jar.

Peter breaks the silence. Kora and Jarod both look down.

PETER (CONT.)
(hands in the air)
All right.

Kora hugs Jarod and they part, giving each other one last
look. Peter and Jarod disappear behind the first set of
doors.

24 INT. VAULT - DAY 24

Inside, the vault door unlocks. The two gurneys are there
but the female body is missing.

JAROD
Carol is loose.

Peter gets prepared. Jarod collects himself and has his stun
gun at the ready. Peter stops him.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 25

PETER
Let me go first... I'm younger.

Jarod isn't in a joking mood.

JAROD
You mean less experienced.

Jarod bursts inside and turns to the left as Peter follows

and aims to the right. There is no sign of Carrol.

Jarod and Peter are both dead silent. They slowly scan the
area. As they walk closer and closer to the gurneys, a sound
comes from behind a piece of equipment. The two move toward
the sound to check.

Suddenly, the male body shakes. They twist toward the noise
ready to pull their triggers. They both realize it is the
male corpse and calm down.

Right then Carol leaps from behind the equipment and tackles
Jarod. His stun gun goes flying.

Peter is slow to use his devise on Carol, realizing that he

would hit Jarod. Peter uses it as a club instead, hitting
Carol on the side of the head.

She rolls off Jarod and starts to attack Peter. Peter pulls
out a knife and jams it into her shoulder. She is unfazed.
Jarod regains his balance and runs for the stun gun. Peter
scrambles from her clutches scared and angry. As she is
about to take a bite out of Peter, Carol goes stiff and
rolls off convulsing from shock. Jarod was able to get a
shot off. Peter and Jarod look at each other.

CUT TO: 30 MINUTES LATER

25 INT. VAULT - 30 MINS LATER 25

Peter and Jarod finish restraining Carol to the gurney and

and begin their work.

JAROD
You ok?

(CONTINUED)

PETER
Yah I'm fine... Just glad you were
there to save my ass.

They smile at each other.

PETER
I swear I will never make another
old joke about you ever again.

They both chuckle and smile. Jarod looks suspicious and

stares at an exposed wound on Peter's arm. Peter recoils and
tries to hide his own concern.

CUT TO : 15 MINUTES LATER

26 INT. VAULT - 15 MINS LATER 26

The two are all finished and begin to get ready to pack up.
As they start to turn for the door. Jarod grabs the stun gun
and tosses the equipment to the side. Jarod then spins and
points the stun gun at Peter.

PETER
What the fuck, Jarod?

JAROD
Show me your arm, Peter.

PETER
Oh, come on, Jar.

JAROD
Show me your arm!

Peter is getting nervous and he starts to pull at his sleeve

showing a distinct bite pattern.

PETER
I...I just landed on some of the
equipment and cut myself, that's
all. It's fine.

Jarod sees that it is much worse than he thought and begins

to back away from Peter.

PETER (CONT.)
No, Jarod look, it's not that bad.
I didn't get bit.

Jarod continues to back away.

PETER (CONT.)

Jarod! JAROD! Stop!

Realizing he can't hide it any more and that he is truly

scared, Peter starts to get hysterical.

PETER (CONT)

It doesn't set in for a week!

We'll just monitor it!

Jarod!

Jarod continues backing toward the door.

I won't show signs, I won't. Trust

me, I feel fine!
Jarod! Jarod, don't shoot!

Peter steps closer.

JAROD
PETER, STOP RIGHT THERE!

PETER

OK.

JAROD
I can't let you back inside.

Peter is crying now.

PETER
No, Jarod, no!

JAROD
I'll come back tomorrow and test
your blood. If it's safe, then you
can come back in.

Peter becomes angry now.

PETER
Stop it! Jarod! Wait! Dammit, no!
Just wait.

Peter reaches for a pistol (a last resort if they need to

kill Carol or Jack). Peter points it toward Jarod but not
before Jarod gets a shot off and sends Peter into
convulsions.

Without hesitation, Jarod moves to the still shaking body,

kicks the pistol away toward the door, and pulls the cap off
a needle with his teeth.

Jarod is shaking and takes too long with the needle. The
effects from the teaser start to fade. Peter gets up and
grabs Jarod's arm. They tussle. Peter reaches for a feeding
tube, wraps it around Jarod's neck, and starts to strangle
him. Jarod struggles. Moments from asphyxiation, Jarod
reaches his hand towards the closest object--the equipment
box--and strikes Peter with it, knocking him down.

Jarod gasps for breath. He crawls towards the taser. Peter

suddenly jumps onto Jarod's back and begins pounding on him,
trying to knock him into submission. Jarod manages to grasp
the taser and shocks Peter in the chest, bringing him to the
floor. Jarod grabs the syringe and jabs it into Peter's
neck.

We see Peter's terror-stricken and shaking face as he slowly

slips into unconsciousness.

Jarod is frustrated and slumps to the floor physically and

emotionally exhausted next to Peter's body.

27 INT: BUNKER ENTRANCE TO VAULT - DAY 27

Kora waits impatiently outside the vault door.

The door opens and Jarod stumbles out with the equipment.
Kora, waiting in her chair rolls over to Jarod and grabs a

box from him. She puts it on her lap. She wheels it to the
sanitation table. She hears the door shut and lock. As she
turns around, she notices that Jarod closed the door behind
him and Peter is no where to be seen.

KORA
Where is Peter?

Jarod is heavy laden and shakes his head. Kora breaks down
and wheels herself to the door. Jarod grabs her before she
gets to the handle. She falls out of her wheelchair. Jarod
wraps his arms around her.

KORA
He is still in there. He needs our
help!

JAROD
No, Kora. No. He's gone. He was
bit. I saw it. He was bit.

KORA
No!

Kora mourns in Jarod's arms.

28 INT. COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT 28

The two are back in the medical room.

JAROD
Kora, I can't go back in there on
my own and you are not coming with
me... Maybe if there were just one
of them but not three...

Kora is silent.

JAROD (CONT.)
We can only work on Carol from now
on.

Kora realizes what Jarod is trying to tell her.

KORA
You mean to kill Jack and Peter?

JAROD
Kora, they are already gone.

Kora is unconvinced. Jared sees this and musters up the

courage to tell her something he did not want to.

JAROD (CONT.)
Peter tried to kill me.

This get's Kora's attention.

JAROD (CONT)
I saw that he was bitten and told
him he couldn't come back inside.
He tried to shoot me.

Jarod stands up and turns away.

JAROD (CONT)
I stoped him from shooting, we
fought, and he nearly strangled me
to death. Kora, he has Recluse
and... and I can't trust him.

Kora realizes the truth and gravity of the issue.

JAROD (CONT)
We have a bit more time. I can work
on Carol and see if we can...

KORA
No...

JAROD
Kora, I told you...

KORA
No, I mean I don't want you to go
back in there. It's too risky... I
don't want to loose you too... I'm
ready to let her go...

Jarod feels for her and tries to say something but nothing
comes out.

KORA (CONT)

JAROD
Tomorrow I'll go back in, one last
time... put an end to their
suffering.

Kora hugs Jarod. As the hug lingers, something catches her

attention.

KORA
Is that Peter's blood?

She sees the screen with Kora's blood sample in it. Jarod
turns to look at the screen of magnified blood, the cells
are mutated and spastic. They quake and rattle.

JAROD
(Jarod lies)
Yah.

KORA
Oh... it changed so fast.

JAROD
Well, like I said it was a bad
bite.

KORA
Huh.

Jarod tries to cover his emotions and Kora stays curious.

29 INT. COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT 29

Jarod is frustrated and mortified, bent over test results.

He holds the vial he marked with a green sharpie and is bent
over 5 different test subjects of blood. He breaks down and
begins to trash his work table, throwing tubes and papers
everywhere.

Jarod crouches down, hurting with frustration, anger, and

sadness. Realizing he will be all alone for the first time
in 5 years.

30 INT. BUNKER BEDROOM - NIGHT 30

Jarod watches Kora as she prepares for bed. Kora begins to

cough fairly violently, She looks sick, and is obviously
achey. Jarod becomes upset.

31 INT. COMMAND CENTER - 10 MINUTES LATER 31

Jarod prepares a gun and loads five bullets, loading them

one by one slowly. He shuts the chamber and holds the
revolver up to the light.

The blackness is broken by the first doorway opening. Both

Kora and Jarod make their way in. They both glove up and put
on masks and eye protection. They look tired and distraught.

Kora can't stop coughing. Jarod looks concerned and Kora

notices.

KORA
I must have caught a cold.

JAROD
Yah.

They both attempt to cover their emotions.

Kora nods.

JAROD
Right.

Jarod begins to unlock the vault. He peeks in. All three of

them are bound, including Peter. The two on the gurneys,
and Peter restrained to a pole.

JAROD (CONT.)
None of them are loose. Remember,
don't come after me.

KORA
Be careful.

He enters and shuts the doors.

Peter immediately registers him. He stares at Jarod as he

walks in from the door. Slowly, Jarod pulls out his gun and
raises it to the sickly Peter's head.

Peter becomes enraged and angry. Peter struggles against his

restraints and attempts to protest. His screams are muffled
beneath the duck tape on his mouth. Jarod is now pointing
the gun at Peter's head. We hear the sounds of a convulsing
body over by the gurneys.

Jarod is about the squeeze the tigger. The camera pans to

see Carol convulsing on the gurney. However there is no
movement from the male body on the other gurney. Jarod
doesn't notice this and is about to pull the trigger...

KORA
Dad.

Peter becomes silent. Jarod and Peter both look at Kora

completely inside the vault and staring at the two gurneys.
Jarod doesn't notice the gurneys still and rushes to Kora to
try to get her out of the vault.

JAROD
Kara what are you doing? You can

Jarod comes to grip with his secret being out in the open.

KORA (CONT.)
Dad... look.

Jarod sees what she has been staring at. The male body is
not moving and his skin pigment is a ripe pink. Jarod runs
over to the body.

KORA
Is he dead?

Jarod checks the body.

JAROD
No... he has a pulse. His vitals
are all normal.

The serum is working.

KORA
Dad, what does this mean?

Jarod is exuberantly excited now. He runs out of the vault

and comes back with vials to extract blood. He almost
forgets about the convulsing Carol threatening them just
besides him. He hits a switch on the generator which stuns
and shocks Carol so that Jarod can freely give her a needle
with anesthesia. Kora gives him a look.

JAROD
(to Kora)
Sorry.

Jarod extracts the blood and holds it to a microscope. After

a bit of frustration he throws off his goggles and mask and
examines further.

JAROD (CONT.)
His blood's clean.

They both are thrilled. Jarod rushes out the door and
returns with several blue vials He injects Carol and then
comes to Peter.

Peter is still enraged. Jarod slowly approaches.

JAROD

Peter still looks angry, with his mouth still taped.

JAROD (CONT)
I know how you must feel, but you
left me with no other choice.

Peter is silent.

Jarod administers the serum to Peter. Jarod waits for a

response and Peter stays cold as ice toward Jarod.

SERIES OF SHOTS:

Jarod administers the blue serum to Kora and himself as

well.

JAROD
And now we wait.

Kora and Jarod look at each other and then look at the
gurneys as they sit against the vault wall.

33 INT. VAULT - DAY 33

Kora finishes transposing a soup like substance to medical

bags and Jarod connects them to the feeder tubs for the male
and Carol.

Kora spoon feeds Peter who is still tied up.

PETER

JAROD

Peter is not satisfied.

but you tried to kill me... twice.

Peter doesn't say anything.

JAROD
Your silence tells me that it's for
the best.

Jarod finishes what he is doing and walks out of the vault

for more supplies.

PETER
Kora, Jarod is loosing his mind.
You have to untie me.

KORA
You think he will get us all
killed?

PETER
Of course, don't you see? He is not
thinking right? He isn't even
prepared if the U.A. were to
strike. You know the two of you
can't operate this place without
me. You need me. Untie me. I can
help. Speak some sense into him.

Kora changes her expression to a serious stare.

KORA
Listen, you aren't doing yourself
any favors by putting down my dad.
And just so you know, if it comes
to you or him, you lose by a land

him in any way I will personally

respect.

34 INT. VAULT - 1 HOUR LATER 34

Jarod is dressing the knife wound on Carol shoulder. Carol's

skin is becoming pink and flush. We see some movement off
focus. It is Jack (the male) who lifts his head, his eyes
open and are clear for the first time that we have seen.
Only his left eye is missing.

JACK
(groaning)
Hmmmmm...

JAROD
Jack! Kora, come here quick!

JACK
Who are you?

JAROD
My name is Jarod. You were... in an
accident. We have been taking care
of you.

KORA
Dad?

Kora enters the vault and sees a stirring Jack. She rushes
over.

JACK
Why am a tied up?

JAROD
You were a danger to yourself...
and to others.

KORA
How do you feel?

Jack notices the sweet little girl. He smiles.

JACK
Thirsty.

Kora and Jarod are caught off guard by this statement.

35 INT. VAULT - NIGHT 35

Kora stays vigilantly fixated on Carol waiting to see when

she revives like Jack.

Jack enters the vault and sees Kora vigilantly watching

Carol. He walks over carrying a bag of brown liquid and puts
the bag to Carrol's feeder tube. Jack has an eye patch on
and is badly scared on his face. On his right hand he only
has his index finger and middle finger. He has long grey
hair tied back in a pony tail.

JACK
Shh. I found some instant pudding
in the bottom cupboard. Thought I'd
share.

Jack and Kora smile at each other.

Kora has fallen asleep waiting by Carrol. Suddenly we hear a

gasp from the Table. This startles Kora who wakes up with a
start. It's Carol. She is scared and frantic. Kora is
excited but is scared that her mom is startled.

KORA
Mom. Mom. It's OK.

Jack overhears the tussle and comes running through the

vault door to help. He grabs Carol's wrists and tries to
calm her down.

JACK
Hey, just take it easy.

CAROL

you? Where's my baby.

Carrol doesn't believe her.

CAROL
You're not my daughter. You're
lying. Kora's just a baby and has
blond hair.

KORA
Mom, it's me. You have been here
for five years.

Carol looks closely not knowing how to feel. Kora embraces

her tightly. carol holds her with her hand that is closest
even though restrained. They both cry.

36 INT. COMMAND CENTER - DAY 36

Carol is on the examination table. Jarod is checking her

eyes and vitals. Kora is holding Carol's hand and sitting
next to her.

JAROD

Carol remembers the infected and is horrified at this. She

starts to take it all in.

JAROD
Infection can set in within a time
period of up to a week. When you
came here you had already been in
contact with the disease without
any of us knowing. - After we
discovered you were turning we
monitored both you. We've have been
looking for a cure.

Carol begins to take in the extensive damage all over her

body for the first time.

JACK
Don't worry, love. It could be
worse.

Jack taps the black bandage that is covering the gaping hole
where his left eye used to be.

JAROD
The infected are extremely
resilient. The virus suppresses
cognitive nerve sequences from the
cerebellum. Pain signals are
ignored. Much to the same
thresholds of someone doped up on
cocaine.

This is a lot for Carol to take in.

JAROD (CONT)
The body pushes through extreme
pain and damage. The wounds on your
body were mostly self inflicted.

CAROL
Mostly?

Jarod becomes slightly embarrassed.

Jarod is even more red that this frail woman before him

JAROD (CONT)

Think of it like a vaccine. Your
body now can suppress the rage.

Carol takes in the fact that Kora is in a wheelchair. This

frightens Carol.

CAROL
Kora.

Jarod notices her interest in the wheelchair.

JAROD
After you turned I monitored Peter
and Kora for a week. When they
showed no sign of infection, they
helped me to find an antidote.

CAROL
What happened to your legs?

JAROD
When you started to turn you threw
Kora away from you. She suffered
injury to her spinal column,
resulting in her paralysis.

KORA
It's OK, mom. I like who I am.

It's an awkward moment and is too much for Carol to take in.
She lays back down and closes her eyes. Kora holds her hand
tighter and looks at Jarod.

Ok, so here is the plan...

38 INT. BUNKER COMMAND CERTER - 10 MIN LATER 38

Carol, Jack, Jarod, and Kora all stand and sit around the
table. Kora, Jack, and Carol listen intently to Jarod.

JAROD
...the cure works and is our only
meal ticket into the U.A. compound.

Jarod holds up one of the neon blue vials.

KORA
We can stop the war with it.

JAROD
The hope is to calmly present the
cure as submissively as possible.

JACK
Aren't they likely to still gun us
down?

JAROD
Yes, which is way I am giving all
of you the cure. If something
should happen to me or anyone
else... the priority is getting
this to them. You will each carry
the cure itself and I will have my
notes in case anything were to
happen to me.

CAROL
Do we even know where the U.A. base
is located?

KORA
(pointing to a map on the
table)
No, not exactly. But based on the
trajectory of the scouts that fly
by and their flight patterns we
believe it is 10-20 miles north
west of here. We'll head that
direction.

She circles one area of a map. Jarod looks at Kora. She

sounds so mature to him. Carol is surprised at her
daughter's strength.

JAROD
I shouldn't need to remind you that
it's not only the U.A. we have to
keep watch for. There are likely
still outsiders...

JACK
And the infected.

CAROL
But we are safe from recluse now.
Aren't we immune?

JAROD
That won't stop them from devouring
our flesh and eating us alive.

This is sobering thought for everyone.

JACK
What risk do the outsiders pose?

KORA
A large one.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 44

JAROD
They all want what we want, safe
access to the base. If you come in
contact with any outsiders do not
let them know of our mission or
that we carry a cure. They will
most likely kill us and take the
cure to the U.A. themselves for
safe passage.

CAROL
So we find the base and present the
serum.

JAROD
Right.

CAROL
You are going need a non-
threatening gesture... I'll present
it.

JAROD
It's a risk for all of us.

JACK
Chances are, we will all be killed
before they believe that we have an
antidote.

Silence falls.

KORA
The U.A. is just trying to survive.

JAROD
And the only way they see to do
that is by eradicating anyone
outside their compounds infected or
not. Our objective is to get close
enough to the base and make a
genuine enough gesture for them to
look twice and find the serum.

CAROL
So, this is, in essence, a suicide
mission.

Well, thanks for curing me for
this.

Jack smiles.

JACK (CONT)
One last question...

All of them look at Jack waiting for his final inquiry.

JACK (CONT)
(Indicating to the vault)
... what are we going to do with
Mr. Personality?

All of them turn back to Jarod for his answer.

39 INT: BUNKER STUDY - NIGHT 39

preparations. Kora hands him tools and supplies.

JAROD

that Kora is frozen in fear. Jarod stops what he is doing

PETER
Because you were going to leave me
here to die.

Silence falls. After a beat Jarod makes a movement and un

locks the padlock that held the chains binding Peter. Jarod
moves closer into Peter's face.

JAROD
The most important thing to me is
that we get to the U.A. base

PETER (CONT)

JAROD

PETER
I guess I don't. Instead I get to

PETER
Well, what's the point huh? I mean

JAROD
Damn it, Peter.

Suddenly an infected blows through the trees and attacks the

two tackling Peter to the ground. Peter throws the zombie

Carol see the madness and take out their guns. They make
space between Jarod and Kora and the on coming infected.

We see Peter nearly get caught by the on coming infected

from the direction he was running. He changes direction and
heads toward the others.

There is a cliff face that towers them, too steep to climb,

but it is the only path away from the infected. They
position themselves behind rocks to reload their weapons.
With the newly reloaded weapons Jack Kora, Jarod, and Carol
begin to unload on the infected that are chasing after Peter
towards them.

They shoot around Peter. Peter flinches and holds his arms
above his head.

Suddenly we hear an infected that has come from along the

cliff and is about to tackle Jarod. We hear "Bang, Bang,
Bang,." Jarod looks behind him to see that Kora has shot the
infected protecting them. They look at each other.

KORA
I got your back.

Peter makes it to the rocks but his crew are all reloading.
The infected are just about to break through. One infected
nearly throws itself on Carol when, BOOM!

The zombie is dropped. More loud BOOMS are heard from the
cliffs and zombies are picked off one by one. Soon there are
none left. One zombie with a flesh wound slowly crawls
dragging herself toward the rocks. One last "Boom" is heard
and her head explodes.

10 - 20 men and women with rifles appear on the ridge of the

cliff face.

One of the figures on the cliff shouts.

CARLOS
Put down your weapons or we'll make

The crew walk around the ridge followed by the outsiders.

43 EXT. TOP OF THE RIDGE - 10 MINUTES LATER 43

At the top of the ridge they meet three more scouts with
bandanas on their faces. CARLOS a large beast of a man
holding a rifle walks toward the lined up crew.

CARLOS

Take off your clothes.

The crew are shocked by this statement and don't move from
confusion.

ENGRED
He said take off your clothes...
Now!

The group of Outsiders train their guns on Jerod's group,

ready to shoot at any sign of resistance.

Jerod nods. Jack and Carol reluctantly begin to undress.

Peter cowardly complies. Jerod sets Kora down and begins to

both of whom catch his eye.

He silently communicates with them with his stare to be

careful not to destroy the vials. They understand. They all

she moves to Jarod. Not only does she not find a bite mark
she rather likes what she sees. When she gets to Jack she
studies harder.

ENGRID
Where did you get these scars?

JACK
I use to be a welder. I'm afraid it
left me bit worse for wear.

Engrid can't find anything that isn't years old as far as

injuries and moves on. Carol has a bandage on her shoulder
where she was stabbed in the vault.

ENGRED
Remove the bandage.

KORA
No.

CAROL
It's ok.

Carol removes the bandage. Engird inspects it.

ENGRED
A knife wound, was it?

CAROL
I was in some bad company recently
and barely left with my life. Only
just recently did I join up with
this lot.

Engird is satisfied and Carol replaces the bandage. She gets

to Peter who is worried that she will see his shoulder. She
sees the wound and how it has a distinct bite mark that is
healing up. She points her gun at him.

ENGRED
Where did you get that scar?

PETER
I fell on some glass.

ENGRED
Carlos! You better have a look at
this.

CARLOS
What is it?

ENGRED
He was bit but it is all healed up.
It was more than a week ago, it had
to have been.

PETER
It was just an accident. See it's
all healed up. It wouldn't have
done that if it was a bite.

Peter meets Jarod's eyes. Carlos and Engird are agreeable

for now.

CARLOS
Put your clothes back on.

44 EXT. CLIFF - NIGHT 44

All dressed, the crew and outsiders walk down the cliff face
on ropes that allow them access into a cave on the face of
the cliff.

45 INT. CAVE CAMPSITE - NIGHT 45

A cave on the cliffside. A campfire lights the middle of the

dwelling. Crates of supplies line the back wall. There is a
card table littered with maps, beer bottles, and a few empty
cartridges. A few worn sleeping bags lie on the floor.

ENGRED
Keep moving.

CARLOS
Home sweet home. What do think of
it?

KORA
It's...nice.

JACK
That's one word for it.

They walk toward the campfire, passing armed guards. One

shoulders a gun. A few people have gathered around the fire
and are eating something that looks like stew. Off to the
side, two teenagers stare and whisper to each other. A man,
MARK, sits at the head of the fire and is working with a
metal bucket. He doesn't look up.

MARK
(without looking up)
Did you inspect them?

CARLOS
Yah. They're clear.

Mark, mid 50s, cold, smart, and hardened is busy churning a

mixture with a metal bucket and a rusty gear.

MARK
Welcome.

Mark acknowledges the crew for the first time.

MARK (CONT)
And what brings you out this way to
our neck of the woods?

Carlos strides over to the group, a relaxed grip on his

weapon.

JAROD
We are just trying to survive.

MARK
(Laughing)
Aren't we all. But that doesn't
answer my question, does it?

Noone says anything. It is an awkward silence. Mark stares

at Jarod as if he is peering into his soul.

SCOUT
They're back.

The ropes carry two more outsiders into the cave, a male and
female. They both remove their bandanas and walk over to
Mark. They stop in front of Mark.

OUTSIDER MAN
Checking in.

MARK
Any luck?

OUTSIDER MAN
None, we'll have to try again
tomorrow.

MARK
Very well.

Mark dismisses them and they move away suspiciously. Carlos

notices something and grabs the woman by the wrist.

CAROLS
Hold on, what is this?

OUTSIDER MAN
Hey, let go of my wife.

Carlos holds him at bay and pulls up the woman's sleeve to

reveal a bite mark.

OUTSIDER WOMAN
It's just a scratch.

Mark stands up.

OUTSIDER WOMAN (CONT)

(crying now)
No! No, please! David tell them.

The outsider man tries to get past Carlos with little

success.

OUTSIDER MAN
Get your hands off my wife. She
just fell that's all.

Jarod and his crew all realize the danger this woman now is
in. They also all realize they have the power to help her
with the cure they carry but dare not tell them they have
the cure. They can't be trusted.

Another outsider runs over to restrain the woman. They pull

her toward the edge of the cave and push her on her knees.
Carlos and the outsider step away. She is on her knees at
the entrance to the cave.

WOMAN
Wait! I'll go! I'll leave on my
own. Just give me a weapon.

One of the teenagers, a girl, runs over to the chaos. She is

stopped by another outsider.

TEENAGE GIRL
Mom!

CARLOS
You know that's not the way it
works.

WOMAN
Please, you can't do this. My
child--

TEENAGE GIRL
(still held back)
Mom!

OUTSIDER MAN
For God's sake leave her alone.

Kora looks to Jerod, pleadingly. Jerod carefully shakes his

head. Jack looks to Jerod, then puts an arm around Carol.
Peter looks away, clenching his fists.

Mark steps forward. He looks at the woman with beading eyes.

Mark glances at her husband and her child. They all are
silently pleading for her life with their eyes. Mark looks
back at the woman held by Carlos and another outsider. He

looks at the bite mark on her arm and closes his eyes.

It seems like a lifetime of silence. Mark opens his eyes and

pulls out a pistol from his holster.

TEENAGE GIRL
No!

OUTSIDER MAN
Mark!

Mark calmly shoots her point blank. Blood spurts from her
skull and she falls back down the cliff. The teenager cries
and the man falls to his knees.

KORA
(gasps and sobs)
No, no, no...

Grim and silent. Peter looks at Jerod. Carol buries her head
in her hands. Kora's face is tear-streaked. Mark turns
toward the man.

MARK
Are we going to have a problem?

The man shakes his head in submission.

MARK (CONT)
Take care of your daughter.

The man submissively strides toward his daughter and takes

her in the back of the cave to console her.

Mark then turns toward Jarod and points his gun right at
him.

MARK
Now, where were we? Ah, yes you
were beating around the bush as to
where you are going.

Mark cocks his gun. Everyone is silent. Eerie sounds come

from the jungle below.

The U.A. base.. that's where we're

CARLOS

Bad idea, mate.

ENGRID
We've all tried. Several times.
They don't take anyone in.

CAROL
Why not?

ENGRID
Too much risk.

CARLOS
Risk, my ass. Fuckers almost gunned
us down! They don't care about
anyone but their own.

JACK
We have to try. If you tell us how
to get there, we'll be on our way
and be out of your hair.

MARK
(suspicious)
Why do you want to go there so
badly?

JAROD
(lying)
We need medicine, for Kora. The
base is our last hope.

MARK
And what makes you think they’ll
give it to you?

JAROD
I don't know, but we have to try.
We figure that they will likely try
to kill us but...

ENGRID

JACK
What orders?

MARK
Extermination. They want to
rebuild. To do that they believe
they must eradicate the virus.

More silence.

MARK (CONT)
Unless you have something that they
badly want, you are not getting in
that compound.

Mark points his gun at Jarod communicating that they need to

tell him what they carry.

JAROD
(lying)
We don't have anything.

Mark chuckles.

MARK
Oh. You're not a very good liar...

The crew become alerted at this statement.

MARK (CONT)
Upon searching your packs we found
this.

He pulls out a set of cryptographic notes and equations. (It

is the formula for the serum.) Jarod's heart sinks. Mark can
see the look of terror on their faces. He calmly looks at
each one.

Everyone is silent. They all are stalling searching for

MARK (CONT)
(With a deep breath)
Please don't lie again.

Mark points the gun at Jarod's head.

MARK (CONT)
Very well.

JEROD
It's nothing. Just some chemical
equations. I'm a scientist.

CARLOS
Who do you work for?

JEROD
I don't work for anyone.

ENGRED
Bull shit. We've patrolled this
area for years... you're the first
people we've seen.

CARLOS
If you didn't come from the base,
then you must have some reason for
going there.

Jarod looks at Mark.

JAROD
I told you we need medicine for...

Mark shifts his gun to point at Kora.

MARK
Are you sure?

Jarod put's his hands in the air.

JEROD
(treading carefully)
Ok, you're right. I have a reason.

Jerod looks from Jack to Carol to Peter, and then to Kora,

guilt written on his face and a plea for understanding. His
plan is to sacrifice himself to give the others a chance.

JEROD (CONT)
Years ago I used to run a lab. I
was on a freelance project. We were
commissioned to create a new weapon
of warfare. A neuroagent
specializing in tissue bio-
regeneration, instant cancer.
Instead we created the resulting
Recluse.

Everyone is taken a back. They all realize that the source

of all their pain is standing right in front of them.

JAROD (CONT)
(head lowered)
The equations are my attempt to
find a cure. I need access to a
laboratory to finish the job.

The others stare at him in shock. Peter is angry. Kora is

confused in disbelief.

MARK
Now we get to the truth. Why is the
truth always so hard. Based on your
crew's reactions this is the first
time they have heard this
information, isn't it?

JEROD
(grief ridden)
Yes.

Without warning, Carlos punches Jerod in the face. Peter is

glad to see him get hurt. Carlos pulls a gun on Jerod and
holds it to his head.

Shock.

ENGRID
What?

JACK
It's true.

Jack lifts his eye-patch, and Carol shows the Outsiders the
scars on her arms.

CAROL
We were infected. He saved us.

A space of fear and reverence hangs around Jarod. The

Outsiders are hesitant to go near him. Peter continues to
glare at Jarod. Whispers build in a growing murmur around
the campfire.

Mark is elated and walks over to Jarod. Mark calmly moves

Carlos's gun away from Jarod's head. Mark crouches down and
is face to face with Jarod.

MARK
So, you not only are working on a
cure. The cure works. How many

Peter stares at Jarod. Jarod pleads with Peter to not say

anything. Peter grows with anger. He is about to say
something. But thinks twice and doesn't.

MARK
The base is about 5 miles away,
through some pretty difficult
terrain. You'll need an escort.
We'll take you there...tomorrow.

Mark holster's his weapon and stands up.

MARK
You can stay the night. Bring them

JAROD
Why.

Silence falls.

Jarod act's dumb.

Silence from Jarod and his crew continue. Jarod thinks how

Jarod stares at Peter. Mark cocks his gun.

MARK (CONT)
Either you hand it over now, or we

The other outsiders cock their guns with Peter cocking his
last and smiling. Jarod begins to pull out one of the vials
from his pocket. He is careful about only taking out one and
leaving the other in. He begins to walk over to Mark.

MARK (CONT)
Put it on the ground.

Jarod slowly places the vial on the ground.

MARK (CONT)
Now walk away.

Jarod turns around and slowly makes his way back. He turns

outsiders retrieve all three vials and hold them in their
hands. Carol stands there shaking unwilling to let go of her
vial. Peter is the only one without a vial.

Peter becomes nervous that he won't have a vial for entry.

PETER
Put it down Carol.

Carol stares at Peter and shakes her head.

JAROD
It's ok Carol put it down.

CAROL

thud.

Peter now realizes how inhumane his act was and that it
might have given him disfavor with his new friends. Peter

turns toward the scene with Carol.

KORA (CONT)

Kora crawls to her mother and holds her head in her hands.

MARK
We can't have you following us to

Kora spits at Mark. Repulsed he aims his gun at her. Jarod

holds a steady gaze at him.

Suddenly we hear running footsteps. An infected launches

itself at Engrid and tackles her. This makes Carlos and Mark
turn. Two more infected are about to be upon them. Mark and
the outsiders begin shooting at them.

Zombies start to fall in front of the fire. The zombies make

it through the shooting and tackle the other two outsiders
their guns go flying. One vial falls and breaks on the rocks
below the other vial falls and manages not to break.

One of the infected steps on the vial and it shatters under

the pressure.

Peter runs toward the jungle's tree line away from danger.

Jack grabs his gun and begins to shoot at the infected.

Jarod collects Kora in his arms. Kora takes the opportunity
and grabs her gun and fires toward the fleeing Peter. She
misses but Peter knows that the bullets fired are meant for
him. This adds more motivation to his exertion.

Kora empties the clip. No more bullets left. Jarod, with

Kora in his arms, and Jack run to the near by tree line.

Mark and Carlos recover from the fall and collect their
guns. They continue picking off infected. Engrid is ravaged,
as chunks of her flesh are disappearing from her beneath
three infected. She screams as they eat her alive.

Mark fires at one hitting it in the shoulder. The infected

all turn to Mark and Carlos.

We hear a chopper over head. Mark stares at the chopper and

They make good work of them. The two outsiders hold up their
vials.

For a moment nothing happens. Mark is hopeful. Then suddenly

fire from the helicopter continues but the two outsiders are
mercilessly gunned down too.

Peter and Jarod watch the two of them die as the vials
slowly slip from the Mark's hand and falls. It shatters on
the ground below. We see shock on the Mark's face as he
takes his last breath on his knees and then falls limp to
the floor, eyes open wide in fear.

The chopper flies away from the tree line looking for other
infected.

JAROD
That chopper came from the other
side of that ridge. That's where
the U.A. base is. Help me get Kora
back in her pack.

KORA

Jarod looks at Kora.

KORA (CONT)

He killed her.

JAROD
I know... we have to get to base.

Kora nods. Jack helps her onto Jarod's pack and straps her
in. Kora drops her empty clip and Jarod feeds her another
one. They head off to the ridge.

51 EXT. JUNGLE COVER - CONTINUOUS 51

Peter is ducked out of sight and watches Jarod and Jack run
toward the ridge. He pulls out the stolen piece of equipment
in his pocket, a flare gun. Peter continues to stare at the
running Jarod and Jack as they run to the ridge.

52 EXT. CLEARING - CONTINUOUS 52

Jarod and Jack are almost to the ridge as they enter a large
clearing just before.

We hear the sound of a flare and the bright lights of it

bursting in the air, bright red. They turn and see Peter who
has shot it.

The sound of the helicopter is heard, as it has seen the

flare and is approaching the scene.

Peter runs to dart back to the clearing. Jarod and Jack look
at each other. Kora aims her gun at Peter again and fire it
at him once more. Nothing lands.

53 EXT. CLEARING - NIGHT 53

Peter runs away from the flare that he has just shot, hoping
to hide behind the outlying jungle to see how the U.A. will
deal with Jarod and his crew, especially without the cure.
He has a devilish smile on.

We hear the helicopter coming toward the flare. Peter's plan

for revenge is working. He is pleased.

Peter's smile vanishes when we see another group of zombies

heading through the jungle toward Peter. Peter turns around
and heads back toward the clearing with Jarod and his crew.

We hear loud gun fire as the the helicopter has come toward
the flare and and shoots down the last group of zombies
before they get to Peter. Pater, Jarod, Kora, and Jack are
all exposed with the helicopters light on them.

Peter frantically fumbles in his jacket pocket and pulls out

the neon blue vial. He gets down on his knees and holds out
the vial with two stretched out hands.

Both soldiers are listening to the orders in their ear

CALM SOLDIER

The aggressive soldier becomes frustrated with his partner.

AGRESSIVE SOLDIER

The aggressive soldier cocks his rifle. Jack and Jarod both

Jarod's back for the first time. He tries to stop his
partner.

SOLDIER
Wait. There is a child.

Peter is frightened. He can't wait any longer and breaks for

it. This spooks the Aggressive Soldier. The Aggressive
Soldier fires at Peter. Jack, feeling the tension, takes
cover and lays flat on the ground. Aggressive Soldier begins

The soldier must have missed. The aggressive soldier falls

We can't tell who is who.

Jarod pulls out his gun and aims at the two soldiers as they

The two soldiers continue to tussle indistinguishably. After

a while one of their silhouettes rises and points their
rifle toward Jack. Jarod fires five times into the soldier
who falls lifeless to the ground.

Jack runs over to Jarod and Kora.

JACK
Kora! Jarred! You two al'right?

JAROD
I think so.

Jack notices something.

JACK
Jarod...

Jarod sees the horror on Jack's face. He looks behind him

and notices the shakes and gargles coming from Kora. Kora
has been hit in the neck and blood is gushing from her
throat, mouth, and nose. She cries and gasps for air with
fear in her eyes pleading with her father as life leaves her
body. Jarod pulls off the pack and places Kora on the
ground. Jarod tries to stop the blood. It's everywhere. He
tries to fix her. He frantically moves, powerless to stop
the hemorrhaging.

JAROD
Kora! NO! NO! Kora! No, no, no.
KORA!!!

Kora stops struggling and slumps with wide open eyes that
stare into the night. Jack tries to comfort Jarod with a
hand on his shoulder. Suddenly he hear the helicopter taking
off and begins shooting at them. They all run and cover. The
helicopter begins to turn to make another pass. Jarod tries
to pick up Kora without the support of the back pack and is
unsuccessful. Jack pulls at Jarod to get him to leave Kora.
Jarod fights him off.

JACK
Jarod, we have to go!

JAROD
I am not leaving her!

They struggle some more before an explosion blows them both

onto their backs. A ringing sound is all that is heard.
Jarod tries to get up and is unable to. A soldier's face is
shown from Jarod's distorted perspective and then black out.

54 INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY 54

Inside a clean white room we see Jarod preparing a needle

and solution.

Jarod is wearing lab clothes.

A little girl and her mother walks in. The little girl is
nervous and her mother and patient and thankful. Jarod puts
two large cotton balls in his ears and turns toward the
little girl. She smiles.

Jarod administers the vaccine to the little girl. Her mom

waits in the seat. The girl looks at the needle and then
back at Jarod. Jarod notices and smiles.

They are ready to go and get their coats. Her mom mouths the
words "Thank you" and moves politely past the door. It
closes and Jarod is left in the room alone again. We see
Jarod in his mixed emotions as the camera zooms in on his
face.

Black out on Jarod.
