POINTS TO REMEMBER FOR GRADE : VI

WEEK: 04 DATE: 26-06-2023 TO 30-06-2023

SUB: MATHEMATICS

Distributivity of Multiplication over Addition

This property says that if we have three whole numbers x, y and z, then

x(y + z) = xy + xz

Example

Evaluate 15 × 45

Solution

15 × 45 = 15 × (40 + 5)

= 15 × 40 + 15 × 5

= 600 + 75

= 675

Identity for Addition

If we add zero to any whole number the result will the same number only. So zero is the additive
identity of whole numbers.

a+0=0+a=a

This clearly shows that if we add zero apples to 2 apples we get the two apples only.

Identity for Multiplication

If we multiply one to any whole number the result will be the same whole number. So one is the
multiplicative identity of whole numbers.

Patterns
Patterns are used for easy verbal calculations and to understand the numbers better.

We can arrange the numbers using dots in elementary shapes like triangle, square, rectangle
and line.

1. We can arrange every number using dots in a line

2. We can arrange some numbers using a rectangle.

3. We can arrange some numbers using a square.

4. We can arrange some numbers using a triangle.

NEW HORIZON GURUKUL, BENGALURU 560103

Use of Patterns
Patterns can be used to simplify the process.

1. 123 + 9 = 123 + 10 - 1 = 133 -1 = 132

123 + 99 = 123 + 100 – 1 = 223 – 1 = 222

2. 83 × 9 = 83 × (10-1) = 830 – 83 = 747

83 × 99 = 83 × (100-1) = 8300 – 83 = 8217

SUB: ENGLISH CHAPTER: SENTENCE STRUCTURE

DIRECT OBJECT, INDIRECT OBJECT AND OBJECT COMPLEMENT

Direct Object and how to identify it in a sentence:

●To find the direct object, put to/for what after the verb.
Example: Rohan gifted me a bag.
The verb in the above sentence is gifted. So we ask the question
Rohan gifted me what?
The answer to this question is a bag.
Hence, a bag is the direct object in the sentence.
Indirect Object and how to identify it in a sentence
●To find the indirect object, put to/for whom after the verb.
Example: Rohan gifted me a bag.
The verb in the above sentence is gifted. So we ask the question
Rohan gifted to whom?
The answer to this question is me.
Hence, me is the indirect object in the sentence.

SUB: SCIENCE CHAPTER: GETTING TO KNOW PLANTS

Roots
● Roots are mostly the underground part of the plant.
● They absorb water and minerals from the soil.
● They hold the soil firmly to keep the plant upright and prevent soil erosion.

Roots are of two types: fibrous root and taproot.

● Fibrous roots: In the plants like grass, the branches of the root come out from the
base of the stem. Such roots are known as fibrous roots.
● Taproots: In some plants, the branches of the root arise from a thick structure under
the ground which is called the main or primary root. Such roots are called taproots.
● Root hair: The fine hair-like structures on the branches of root are root hair.
● Lateral roots: The smaller roots on taproot are called lateral roots.

Root modification

1. To store food:

2. For additional support:
a) Prop roots: Banyan tree

b) Stilt roots: Maize

c) Aerial roots: Mangroves

NEW HORIZON GURUKUL, BENGALURU 560103

Stem
● It bears leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, etc.
● The stem conducts water from the roots to the leaves and to the other parts and food
from leaves to the roots and other parts of the plant.
● Potatoes, ginger, onion, etc. though present in the soil, are actually stem and store food
within them.
● The stem has nodes from where the leaves arise. The space between two nodes is called
the internodes.

SUB: SOCIAL SCIENCE CHAPTER: DIVERSITY AND DISCRIMINATION

Difference and Prejudice: Differences can only be stated on the basis of a comparison or
categorization. Whereas, prejudice is an unfavourable opinion or feeling, formed beforehand
or without knowledge, thought, or reason.

Stereotypes: A “stereotype” is a generalisation about a person or group of persons. We

resort to prejudice by ascribing characteristics to a person based on a stereotype, without
the knowledge of complete facts. It reduces an individual to a rigid image and does not
consider the fact that human beings are complex and multidimensional with unique
attributes. Stereotypes suggest that people or groups of people are the same, although they
are quite different.

Inequality and Discrimination Discrimination occurs when people act on their prejudices
or stereotypes because of several reasons. People belonging to different religions can be
an aspect of diversity but can also be a source of discrimination. Some people who may
speak a certain language, follow a particular religion, live in specific regions, or so may be
discriminated against as their customs or practices may be seen as inferior. Further, the
matter of different economic backgrounds is not a form of diversity but of inequality. Some
people may experience both kinds of discrimination. They are poor and belong to groups
whose culture is not valued. Tribals, some religious groups and even particular regions are
discriminated against for one or more of these reasons.

D. Answer the following questions

1. What is the use of a scanner?

A scanner is used to capture images from photos, magazine pages and similar sources for
computer editing and display. Scanners work by converting the image on the document into
a digital copy that can be stored on a computer.

2. Give few uses of Biometric Devices.

Biometric Devices are used for identifying a person’s identity on the basis of his/her distinctive
physical characteristics. It also helps in enhancing security as compared to system and for
identification and access control at various places such as schools, offices and airports.

3. Why is SSD preferred over HDD?

SSD is preferred over HDD because SSDs support faster speed and provide better
performance and reliability over HDDs.

4. Differentiate between RAM and Rom.

5. What are the various functional components of a CPU? Discuss them briefly.

Components of CPU are

A. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)

B. Control Unit (CU)
C. Memory Unit

A. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)

The Arithmetic and Logical Unit is responsible for arithmetical and logical calculations in
the system.
Functions of ALU:
● It is mainly used to make decisions like performing arithmetic and logical operations.
● All information that is exchanged between the primary and secondary memory passes
through the ALU.

B. Control Unit (CU)

● The control unit controls the way input and output devices, the Arithmetic, and Logic
Unit, and the computer’s memory respond to the instruction sent to the CPU.
● It uses electrical signals to execute stored program instructions.
Functions of Control Unit:
● It controls the sequence in which instructions move in and out of the processor and
also the way the instructions are performed.
● It is responsible for fetching the input, converting it into signals, and storing it for further
processing.
● It controls the functioning of other components of the CPU like ALU and Registers.
C. Memory Unit
● It is used to store data, instructions and information.
● It is also known as a primary/internal memory.
● CPU stores data and instructions in Registers.
● There are various kinds of registers that perform different functions.
The memory unit’s functions

NEW HORIZON GURUKUL, BENGALURU 560103

• Before the final results of processing are sent to an output device, it saves them.
• The main memory receives and transmits all inputs and outputs.
