Highfield School – cake sale

Students at Highfield School are holding a cake sale to raise money to buy new
equipment for the school computer club. In this activity you will make a spreadsheet
to help the students record how much they will raise through the cake sale.

Try to work without help. However, ask your teacher for help if this is the only way
you can do the activity. If your equipment breaks or is faulty, let your teacher know
right away.

1. Create the spreadsheet shown in the image below. When you have Teacher use
completed this task: only

a check your work to make sure the data is complete and correct
b add a formula to add up the total costs
c make sure your name is shown clearly somewhere on the
spreadsheet, and save your work using an appropriate file name.

2. The students bake 120 cakes to sell at the cake sale. Extend the spreadsheet Teacher use
to add these new items: only

a A cell that shows the total number of cakes for sale.


b A cell that shows the cost of each cake baked by the class. (You will
need to add a cell containing a formula that works out the total cost
divided by the number of cakes sold.)

3. The students want to make a profit of $1.25 per cake sold.


a Add a cell to the spreadsheet containing the target profit students
want to make from each cake sold.
b Add a cell containing a formula that calculates what price students
should sell each cake for to make their target profit.
c Add a final cell to show the total profit students will make from the
cake sale if they sell all of the 120 cakes they made.
