Detailed Lesson Plan for King Lear as a Tragic Hero

I. Objectives:
At the end of the 60 – min. period, the students should be able to:
A. distinguish the characteristics of Greek tragic hero from Elizabethan hero by analyzing
the differences between King Lear and Oedipus;
B. realize that flaws is part of being human but what matters most is how a person handles
the consequences of his/her flaws; and
C. perform a role play wherein King Lear is reimagined as a Greek Tragic hero.

Based on the images along with passages, what do From my observation, the two literary

B. Introduction/ Presentation of the Lesson

That is right, both plays are tragedies and in today’s


lesson we will focus on the most important element
of a tragedy which is the tragic hero.

D. Unlocking of difficulty

Before we begin let us first familiarize ourselves with


the unfamiliar words that we will encounter in the
lesson with the use of rebus puzzles. A rebus is a
riddle or puzzle made up of letters, pictures, or
symbols whose names sound like the parts or
syllables of a word or phrase. Also, use the clues to
identify the unfamiliar word or phrase.

E. Enrichment Activity

Now that you’re prepared, let us now move on with


the group activity. Count from one to two. Those
who are number one are the group one while those
who counted two are the group two. Each group will
be given an info graph which you have to fill with
the missing information. Choose your leader and
two representatives. The leader will begin the
discussion while the representatives will present
your work in front.

IV. Valuing
From the previous activity, you can notice the
differences of the Roman tragic hero and
Elizabethan tragic hero. You can notice that is part
of being human but what matters most is how a
person handles the consequences of his/her flaws.
Now write an essay about that theme wherein you
have to include your own experience when you
exhibited your flaw.

VI. Generalization

Now before we end the class who can wrap up Today we learned that a tragic hero is who
today’s lesson? must be born into nobility, endowed with a
tragic flaw, doomed to make a serious error
in judgement, fall from great heights or high
esteem, realize they have made an
irreversible mistake, and faces and accepts
death with honor meets a tragic death.

What is the difference of a Greek tragic hero from The Elizabethan tragic hero like King Lear
an Elizabethan tragic hero? do not exhibit tragic grandeur while the
Greek tragic hero suffers silently such as in
Oedipus who gouge his eyes and went to a
self-exile.

VII. Assignment

Prepare for the next class by reading the selection


Macbeth.
