P-DELTA EFFECTS

What is P-Delta Effects?

- P-Delta is a term derived from “P” that is the

load and “Delta” which is the lateral
deformation.
- It generates Additional shear forces and bending
moments in columns because of the lateral
deformation.
- P-Delta Effects is specifically important for Tall
Buildings, as these structures tends to deform
considerable during earthquakes.

P-DELTA EFFECTS

P-Delta Stability Coefficient Formula

REFER TO FOR P-DELTA STABILITY COEFFICIENT
UBC 1997 – SECTION 1630.1.3
NSCP 2015 – SECTION 208.6.3

IF STABILITY COEFFICIENT IS LESS THAN 0.10 FOR EVERY STORY,

THEN P-DELTA EFFECTS ON STORY SHEARS, MOMENTS, AND
MEMBER FORCES MAY BE IGNORED. IF IT EXCEEDS 0.10, THEN P-
DELTA EFFECTS SHALL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE WHOLE
STRUCTURE.

RELIABILITY / REDUNDANCY FACTOR

Sample Application : Special Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF)

AS STATED IN
UBC 1997 – SECTION 1630.1.3
NSCP 2015 – SECTION 208.6.3

FOR SEISMIC ZONES 3 & 4, P-DELTA EFFECTS

NEED NOT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SMRF
BUILDINGS WHENEVER I SATISFIES THE
FOLLOWING CRITERIA

THEREFORE, CONSIDER P-DELTA EFFECTS
