Answer ALL questions. [60 Marks]

This paper contains TWO (2) questions. Each question carries 30 marks. Complete
calculation must be provided.

Question 1
a) Because of the current economic condition, a firm reports that 30 percent of its
accounts receivable from other business firms is overdue. If an accountant takes
a random sample of five such accounts, determine the probability that at least 3
of the accounts are overdue.
(5 marks)

b) Muamalah Sdn. Bhd. is a textile manufacturer that has outlets all over Malaysia.
Table 1 shows the annual sale of Muamalah Sdn. Bhd. for every state.

Table 1: Annual Sales of Muamalah Sdn. Bhd.

Outlet Annual Sales Outlet Annual Sales

(RM in Millions) (RM in Millions)
Perlis 1.7 Kelantan 1.1
Kedah 1.6 Negeri Sembilan 3.2
Pahang 2.8 Sabah 1.5
Wilayah Persekutuan 5.6 Johor 5.2
Perak 1.3 Pulau Pinang 4.6
Sarawak 2.2 Selangor 5.8
Terengganu 1.3 Melaka 2.7

Required:

Find the probability that the annual sale is between RM1.2 million and RM5.0
million.
(10 marks)

c) Recently, the Graduate School of Muamalat (GSM) has encouraged the lecturers
to attend an online training for teaching and learning to improve the quality of
teaching delivery method. To evaluate the program, the Deputy Dean, Dr Khairul
requested an estimate of the mean time required for the lecturers to complete
the training. A sample of 20 lecturers is selected and data on the training time in
hours are shown in Table 2.

Required:

Estimate the 95 % confidence interval of the population mean for the online
training program.

Question 2
a) Explain how the significance level is related to the size of the test statistic and the
probability of a Type I error.
(5 marks)

b) Adilah Products Enterprise is a Muslim manufacturer producing halal chili and

tomato sauce located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Recently, due to increase in
technological innovation, the production manager Encik Harris wants to increase
the quality of the chili sauce that they produced. Past records indicate that the
average shelf life of the sauce is 216 days. After a revised recipe has been
developed, a sample of nine (9) bottles of chili sauce has been selected which
yield a mean of 217.22 and a standard deviation of 1.2019.

Required:

At the 0.025 significance level, decide if the sample data support the claim that
shelf life has increased. State your decision in terms of the null hypothesis. Draw
an appropriate diagram to support your claim.
(10 marks)

c) Table 3 gives Stata output for the following situation. The data consist of the 68
houses that have Quality = 1. Y = Sales Price of the house (“salesprice” on the
output), and the three predictor variables are:

X1 = Square feet divided by 100 = “sqft100” on the output

X2 = Number of bedrooms = “bedrooms” on the output
X3 = Lot size in square feet = “lotsize” on the output

Notice in the output that the model was fit twice, with the variables in two different
orders, but the designation of X 1, X2 and X3 are as defined above. In other
words, we define X1 = Square feet divided by 100, and so on, no matter what
order they appear in the Stata command.

Table 3: Stata Output for Sales Price of the House

Required:

i. Write the estimated regression equation for the full model with all three (3)
variables. Conduct the global test, state the test statistic, the p-value, and
evaluate whether or not to reject the null hypothesis using α = 0.05
(4 marks)

ii. Give the numerical values (from the output) for two different test statistics
for testing H0: β3 = 0 (given that X1 and X2 are in the model). Evaluate
your answer in words [1-2 sentences], in the context of the real estate
situation, what this hypothesis is testing.
(4 marks)

iii. Assess the result if you use bedrooms as the only predictor to fit the
simple linear regression model. Conclude your answer based on the
information provided in the output.

d) The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, Universiti Sains Islam
Malaysia received data on how to predict dropouts in order to try to identify
students at risk of failure or dropout. The prediction is based on the data that
shows how frequently students viewed discussion posts and content pages on
course websites, GOALS, for three different courses namely Accounting,
Statistics and Economics to find connections between online engagement and
academic success. Table 4 shows students who were ‘successful’ received an A,
B, or C in the class, and students who were ‘unsuccessful’ received a D, F, or an
incomplete.

Table 4: Average Number of Pages Viewed in GOALS

Course Views of Discussion Posts Views of Content Pages

Successful Unsuccessful Withdrew Successful Unsuccessful Withdrew
Accounting 1,531 355 307 230 139 87
Statistics 441 80 56 492 228 65
Economics 684 221 80 399 223 62

Required:

After reviewing Table 4, the Dean thought that engaging students online will
improve their course performance and will substantially reduce the failure rates.
However, the Dean’s prediction did not come true. Demonstrate the reasons to
the Dean why his prediction is not true and suggest an appropriate statistical
analysis.
