General P.G.T Beauregard began a savage bombardment on Fort Sumter, a Union-held fort
in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. This imprudent attack marked the beginning of the
Civil War, forcing the fort´s surrender after two days of intense fighting.

Presenter: As the war increased, the need for forces became evident. In response, both the
Union and Confederate sides saw a surge in volunteers. Ordinary citizens, inspired by
patriotism, crowded to recruitment centers, ready to fight for their own causes. These brave
volunteers would soon become the most important of their armies.

Presenter: The first battle of bull run, fought on july 21, 1861, was a dangerous lesson for the
Union, as their hopes of a quick victory were broken by the Conference forces under general
P.G.T. Beauregard and General Stonewall Jackson. Over a year later, in August 1862, the
Second Battle of Bull Run would again see these two armies conflict. This time, Union
General John Pope would face defeat, accenting the brutal reality of this war.

Robert E.Lee. He led the Confederate Army with remarkable skill and strategy. His military
prowess was exhibited in battles such as the Second Battle of Bull Run.

It was a crucial moment in the war. Fought in September 17,1862, near Sharpsburg,
Maryland, this battle was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. Union General
George McClellan disagreed with General Robert E.Lee's Confederate forces. While the
battle was technically indecisive, it forced Lee's retirement, giving the Union a moral victory.

These are just a few of the many chapters in this ongoing struggle for the soul of a nation.
