Problem 1:
Considering figure on the right, a third wound coil is
added to the ferromagnetic core discussed in the lecture.
The resistance is 𝑟𝑟3 and the leakage and magnetizing
inductances are 𝐿𝐿𝑙𝑙3 and 𝐿𝐿𝑚𝑚3 , respectively. The coil is
wound so that positive current (𝑖𝑖3 ) produces ∅𝑚𝑚3 in the
opposite direction as ∅𝑚𝑚1 and ∅𝑚𝑚2 .
Derive the T equivalent circuit model for this three-
winding transformer, and draw the equivalent circuit with
indications of the different circuit components.

Problem 2: The three-phase currents in an AC machine are

ia (t ) I s cos ( ωt + θ0 ) ;=
= ib (t ) I s cos ( ωt + θ0 − 120° ) =
; ic (t ) I s cos ( ωt + θ0 + 120° )

You can choose a random current magnitude Is between 5 A and 500 A, current frequency
between 10 Hz and 1000 Hz; and the initial angle θ0 between 0° and 180°.
1) Calculate the currents in (a) stationary reference frame and (b) in the synchronous
rotating reference frame.
2) Write a script in Matlab to demonstrate the current waveforms in abc, αβ and dq
reference frames with a) only the fundamental current; b) fundamental and the 5th
harmonies; c) fundamental and the 7th harmonies; and d) fundamental and a combination
of the 5th and the 7th harmonics. The harmonic magnitude can be chosen to be 3%-30% of
the fundamental current magnitude; and the phase angle can be between 0° and 180°.

Problem 3:
The PMSM used in Tesla Model 3 has parameters of: P=8, Rated speed =3600 rpm;
Ld=0.42mH, Lq=0.52mH, Rs=0.028Ω, and λPM=0.23Vs/rad (phase, peak). The battery is rated at
75 kWh with a nominal DC bus voltage of 360 V. The motor is fed by a three-phase inverter with
sine wave PWM at a switching frequency of 12 kHz.
1. Derive the required d-axis current under flux weakening control for a given phase current
peak value Im and motor speeds higher than the rated speed. The objective is to make sure
the motor voltage does not go over the inverter voltage limit. The resistance can be
ignored. (hint: derive the current Id as a function of the machine parameters, speed,
current Im and the voltage limit Vm)
2. Calculate the dq-axis current and torque of the motor when operate at 6000 rpm and
Im=480A.
