SANJE Online Training Program on Justice Education

Dates: 2nd and 3rd February 2024

Concept Note

The South Asia Network for Justice Education (SANJE), with the support of the Global
Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) Regional Grant Programme, is proud to announce its
two-day online training program scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd February 2024. This initiative
seeks to bring together educators, practitioners, and justice professionals from South Asian
nations to participate in an enriching learning experience and collaborative discourse on the
advancements in the field of justice education. We will be focusing on 4 specific themes in this
training program: How to Integrate Reflective Practices; How to Integrate Interdisciplinarity;
How to Measure the Impact of Such Work; and Recent Experiments and Innovations in Justice
Education in South Asia. There is no registration charge, and participants who attend all
sessions will be provided with a digital certificate of participation, if desired.

While the main emphasis is on deepening some fundamentals of pedagogic practice, broadly,
the event will emphasize three learning outcomes.

I. Taking stock

Legal education is not just about textbooks and statutes; it is about preparing and equipping the
next generation of legal professionals to meaningfully address socio-legal injustices. The
landscapes of justice education in South Asia and across the globe are rapidly evolving. The
SANJE training program aims to provide participants with an overview of recent developments
in the justice education space by bringing together experienced and new practitioners. By the
end of the program, participants will have a deeper understanding of some of the latest trends,
innovative practices, and important ongoing projects in the region.

II. New approaches, novel pedagogies and best practices

Justice education is not just about what we teach but how we teach it. One of the primary
objectives of this event is to foster dialogue. Attendees can openly discuss and share new
approaches and initiatives in justice education, and explore novel pedagogies tailored to the
unique challenges and needs of South Asian countries. We hope that attendees will leave with
a toolkit of pedagogical methods that they can apply in their own teaching. In particular, we
will be focusing on integrating reflective practices and interdisciplinarity into experiential
learning work, learning how to measure the impact of such work, and planning for innovation
and creativity in such work.

III. Strategies to address recurrent challenges

South Asia faces recurrent challenges in the field of justice education and clinical legal
education (CLE). These challenges include resource constraints, access to justice issues, and
evolving legal frameworks. Through the examples shared and contexts explored, the training
program will also encourage the exploration of practical strategies and collaborations to
address some key challenges in the design and delivery of justice education. By the end of the
program, participants will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of justice education
in South Asia and work towards sustainable solutions.
