NOTA: AID IN STRENGTHENING THE SKILLS IN READING MUSICAL NOTES FOR STRUGGLING
GRADE 7 LEARNERS
I. CONTENT AND RATIONALE
The education in the Philippines often fails to see the effects of learning the music and arts on
the cognitive reasoning and development of self-esteem of students. Numerous concerns have been
voiced recently regarding the efficiency, worth, and approaches used in music education. Does anyone
who learns to read music use it after finishing school and outside of the classroom? It is the purpose of
this paper to show how the learning of music reading, when properly taught, will be meaningful and
useful to the child. By being of service to the learner, music reading will justify its place in the music
curriculum.
Music can be learned by two methods. It can be learned by ear, which is called rote learning. In
rote learning, the music is played or sung until the learner can repeat what he has heard. This method
makes the learned dependent upon others and leaves much of his music learning to chance. The other
method by which music can be learned is through music reading or note learning. This involves specific
direction of the attention upon the meaning conveyed by music symbols. The ability to translate these
symbols into meaningful patterns of sound and movement is music reading. These symbols come to
mean how the music should sound and feel. The efficiency of music reading depends upon the capacity
to understand the musical meanings conveyed in the symbolism. The reading of music involves certain
physical and mental skills. These skills are a combination of ear, eye, and mechanical processes.
STRATEGY
The strategic plan of this study is video lesson, inviting a skilled music teacher to strengthen the
readiness of the learners in terms of reading musical notes. It can also provide students to learn in new
ways and styles enabling them to read musical notes in enjoyable way.
b. Data Gathering
The study will use the quantitative research design specifically pre-experimental research
design. The study design happens before the true experiment starts. This is done to determine the
researcher’s interventions on the participants. The respondents will be exposed to an intervention and
their musical note reading skills will be assessed. The gathered data will be analyzed using survey and
AimsWeb fluency testing scores.
c. Data Analysis
A music and reading interest survey will use to gather feelings and attitudes towards reading
and music. The survey also provided a background into students’ prior study habits. The research
also compared students identified learning styles from a prior learning styles instrument used by the
classroom teacher. This identified the students as visual learners, or auditory learners. Quantitative
data was gathered through comparison of AimsWeb fluency testing score sessions from both
conditions (musical versus nonmusical).
