Introduction

Chapter 1: Basic aspects of translation
Translation of texts from the source language into the target language is an
integral part of many industries. The phenomenon of globalization has influenced
its dissemination to such an extent that the average recipient is sometimes not
even aware that what he is dealing with is not the original text. This chapter
discusses the process of translation, its types, as well as problems related to
performing, especially, literary translation.

Figure 1. Eugene Nida's model of the translation process (Bassnett, 2014:26).
The basic division of translation is the division due to the form in which it
is made. It can be in written or oral form, the latter being divided into
simultaneous and consecutive (Figure 2.). In simultaneous interpreting, the
translation process takes place almost simultaneously with the utterance by the
speaker, while consecutive interpreting takes place after the end of the utterance
or some of its parts. However, Teresa Tomaszkiewicz suggest distinguishing one
more type, apart from written and oral translation, which is mixed translation,
that includes, among others, visual translation or dubbing (Pisarska,
Tomaszkiewicz, 1998:63-67).

1.3. Problems concerning the translation process
5
Krzysztof Hejwowski, introduce their own myths of translation studies, some of
which are described below.
The myth of literalness is a phenomenon according to which an ideal
translation is a reflection of the original text only by means of faithful
equivalents. It is associated with word-for-word translation, which very often
results in ungrammatical and incomprehensible target texts. According to
Lipiński, the followers of this myth are able to reflect the original only
superficially, ignoring the aspect of reflecting its meaning and the message it
conveys. What is more, he proves that differences in the grammars of two
languages often make it impossible to translate texts word-for-word (2004:29-
35). For example, the simple sentence "Mam kota" in Polish consists only of the
predicate and the object, while in English it requires the addition of the subject
and the indefinite article – “I have a cat”. Of course there are texts where literal
translation is possible, however not in literary texts. This is also noted by
Hejwowski, who emphasizes that using only word-for-word translation often
deprives the target text of such features as melodics, rhythms, rhymes or
metaphors. He believes that many literal translations result from a
misunderstanding of the original text and emphasizes the importance of cultural
differences in the translation process. Aspects of life such as religion or law,
which differ significantly from one country to another, mean that in each of them
there are terms that do not have their equivalents in other languages. Moreover,
no one can tell the translator what the literal equivalent of a given word is in
another language, and this is what makes literal translation of a literary text
impossible (2004:24-37).
The myth of untranslatability is connected with the belief that translation
is completely impossible. Hejwowski explains the existence of this belief as the
impossibility of obtaining absolute certainty that the translation of a given text
corresponds to its meaning. However, he points out that words in different
languages that are not absolute equivalents nevertheless have a similar meaning
(2004:11-23). Moreover, he supports Olgierd Wojtasiewicz's belief that even
though the understanding of a given text may not be identical between different
6
people, they will be similar (qtd. in Hejwowski, 2004:13). Another aspect that
strengthens the belief in the myth of untranslatability is the problematic nature of
translating texts containing many intertextual references that are understandable
only to representatives of a given culture. Lipiński, however, claims that it is
possible to achieve an analogous communicative and aesthetic effect using other
means than those used in the original text (2004:36). Hejwowski shares this
belief, emphasizing that the ability to empathize with other ways of thinking is
extremely important in the translation process (2004:15).
The myth of inferiority can be described as a belief that the target text is
always worse than the source text. Lipiński argues that a translation which is a
faithful representation of the original text does not always have to be the one that
will gain recognition among the audience using the target language. As an
example, he points to two translations of Winnie the Pooh: one by Irena Tuwim
(Kubuś Puchatek) and the other by Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska (Fredzia Phi-
Phi). Although the latter is a more faithful reproduction of the original text, the
former is more deeply rooted in Polish culture, which is probably due to its
adaptation to the canons of Polish children's literature. Lipiński ends his
considerations with the conclusion that a translation can be considered inferior
only on the assumption that it should be a reproduction of the original text
without the use of means characteristic of the target language (2004:60-77),
which, as mentioned above, would lead to the creation of a target text
incomprehensible to its recipients.
The myth of the only solution is defined as a belief that there can only be
one perfect representation of the original text. Lipiński takes it into consideration
and comes to the conclusion that the multiplicity of solutions that can be used in
the translation process depends on the translator's individual decisions.
Moreover, he criticizes the uncreative approach of translators resulting from their
fear of creating a translation that is not a sufficiently faithful reflection of the
source text. He explains that literary translation in particular is based on the art of
choice, and the translator makes decisions on three levels: obligatory, i.e.
resulting from grammar and situational rules, objective and subjective, i.e.
7
resulting from the translator’s intuition. Ultimately, Lipiński comes to the
conclusion that for a single source text a very large number of translation projects
can be distinguished, each of which will differ from the original text, and at the
same time it is difficult to assess which of them can be considered the right or the
most correct one (2004:78-97).
The myth of machine translation is connected with a belief that a fully
proper translation can be performed by specially adapted computer programs.
Although technology has advanced greatly in the aspect of machine translation
and many of the currently available computer translation programs are able to
produce almost flawless translations, Lipinski rightly notes that in many cases
this type of translation can be inappropriate for a given communication situation.
He also emphasizes that the computer does not have the ability to interpret a
given text, but only automatically replaces the elements of the source language
with those of the target language (2004:98-119). However, despite some
disadvantages, machine translations have become a very useful tool in recent
years, being used by translators all over the world. The texts created with their
use often require only minor corrections to become proper translations.
Lipiński also contradicts the myth of describability of the world which
claims that the world is a creation described by means of language. He believes
that language is indeed used to describe the world, but he also draws attention to
the essence of extra-linguistic phenomena existing in the world that cannot be
easily described. Moreover, Lipiński points out that every language is made of
words, i.e. signs that can change their meaning depending on the context and
situation (2004:120-135). This highlights why correct interpretation and
understanding of the source text are so important in the translation process.
Jiří Levý claims that the process of translation can be reduced to deciding
between two opposing possibilities, a series of which Theodore Savory proposed:
“1. A translation must give the words of the original.
2. A translation must give the ideas of the original.
3. A translation should read like an original work.
4. A translation should read like a translation.
8
5. A translation should reflect the style of the original.
6. A translation should possess the style of the translator.
7. A translation should read as a contemporary of the original.
8. A translation should read as a contemporary of the translator.
9. A translation may add to or omit from the original.
10. A translation may never add to or omit from the original.
11. A translation of verse should be in prose.
12. A translation of verse should be in verse. (qtd. in Levý, 2011:14-15)”
Lipiński refers to this quote when discussing the myth of the "only correct" truth.
Once again, he emphasizes that there is no one right solution in the process of
translation, which results from the fact that there are many truths in the reflection
on translation, and some of them are contradictory. The task of the translator is
the subjective assessment which of them will be followed in the translation
process (2004:136-149).
Each text is associated with different difficulties, and the aim of this thesis
is to show them in a practical way. In the next chapter, the short story
"Unfinished Business" by Christopher Priest is translated from English into
Polish. The third chapter discusses the difficulties that arose during the
translation, as well as the solutions chosen by the author of the work.
9
Literary translation is considered to be a unique type of translation.
Clifford Landers compares the process of translating a literary work to solving
puzzles, pointing out difficulties concerning elements such as reproducing the
tone of the original text or finding an equivalent for a source-language pun. He
argues that this type of translation is particularly demanding due to the fact that
literary texts very often contain elements such as slang, nicknames,
colloquialisms, proverbs, references to popular culture or idioms (2001:3-11).
According to Lipiński, literary texts have several characteristics which are
important in terms of translations. Among them, he lists, for example, the mutual
orientation of content and form, the essence of information implicitly contained
in the message, intertextuality, ambiguity, as well as a multitude of references to
literary tradition, or cultural, philosophical, or religious contexts (2000:160-166).
Thanks to their uniqueness, literary translations involve a variety of possible
solutions, the choice of which is dictated by a number of objective and subjective
decisions of the translator.

Chapter 2: “Unfinished Business” - Translation
Using the information contained in the previous chapter, the author of the
work translated a short story from English into Polish. This chapter consists of
information about Christopher Priest, the author of "Unfinished Business", and
the practical part, i.e. the translation of the story.
Christopher Priest (Figure 4.) is a novelist and science fiction writer born
in Cheshire, England in 1943. He started his writing career with “The Run”,
a story published in 1966. Priest has written and published around twenty novels
and five short story collections, many of which have been translated into Polish.
One of his most popular works is The Prestige, a fantasy novel released in 1995
which ten years later was adapter into a film by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan.
As an acclaimed author, Priest has won awards such as the BSFA award (for
Inverted World, The Extremes, The Separation, The Islanders), the James Tait
Black Memorial Prize (for Fiction) and the World Fantasy Award (for The
Prestige).
11
“Unfinished Business” was originally published in 2013 in Crimewave 12:
Hurts (TTA Press) edited by Andy Cox. It is a short story which has not been
translated into Polish before. Its protagonist is a middle-aged businesswomen
haunted by the feeling that she is being watched. As the story develops, it reveals
the secrets of her past which causes her to make difficult and dangerous
decisions. “Unfinished Business” is a surprising and suspenseful story, which
makes translating it a demanding, yet extremely interesting experience.

Chapter 3: Translator’s Notes
3.1. Idioms
Translating these idioms word for word would make these sentences
completely meaningless to the Polish reader. In order to preserve the meaning
45
of the source text, I decided to use Polish idioms with a similar meaning and
if this was not possible, I used non-idiomatic equivalents. Moreover, in Sentence
7., it was necessary to change the singular to the plural, which resulted from the
fact that "money" in English is a singular uncountable noun, while in Polish
“pieniądze” is countable.
This subchapter presents changes introduced in the text at the word level,
such as replacing a given word with its hypernym resulting from the lack
of an equivalent in Polish or other reasons described below.
Due to the fact that the English language has words that do not have their
equivalents in Polish, during the translation it was necessary to replace them with
terms with a broader or narrower meaning. Table 2. presents the hypernyms and
hyponyms used in the target text.
5 The day after that I called in sick. Dzień później wzięłam wolne.
46
6 Once I had eliminated other Kiedy już wykluczyłam inne
options about the man… możliwości na temat tego człowieka…
7 …an ordinary weekday in early To był zwyczajny, czerwcowy

8 After that I had to see my line Później miałam zdać relację ze

the meeting. Kersey’emu.
47
sounds natural in the target language and does not change the meaning of the
source text.
Sentence 8: I decided to translate “line manager” as “przełożony”
(“supervisor”), without specifying that this is the person directly responsible for
supervising the work of the main character, because it is not important from the
point of view of the plot. In Sentence 6., I used the word “człowiek” (“human”)
instead of “mężczyzna” (“man”) to avoid repetition.
3.2.1. Substitutions
The lack of literal equivalents or the need to adapt the term to the
appropriate collocation in the target language means that in some fragments
of the text it was necessary to use substitutions at the word level, which
is presented in Table 3.
48

50
also includes Sentences 12., 17., and 23., which is not translated word-for-word,
and instead a collocation commonly used in Polish is introduced.
Sentence 10: The changes are conditioned by the more frequent use of the
phrase “wiesz, co robić” ("you know what to do") instead of “wiesz, jak to
zrobić” ("you know how to do it"), which in this case does not change the
meaning contained in the source text. The situation is similar in the case
of Sentence 11., in which I decided not to specify that the statement concerns the
character's house, because this information clearly results of the term "do mnie",
which I used instead of “do mojego domu”.
Sentence 13: I decided to change the verb “nadszedł” ("come") to the verb
with the opposite meaning – “minął” ("passed"). I believe that with regard to the
rest of the sentence, in which the author describes the events taking place on
Monday, it is more natural in Polish to refer to the weekend as something that
has already ended.
Sentences 14 and 25: The changes introduced are intended to avoid
repetitions that would occur later in the text. In addition, in the case of the second
change, I believe that the name of the district is not important to the plot.
Sentences 15 and 19: I decided not to use the phrase "pociąg niósł mnie",
because the fact that the train passes by the house of one of the characters seems
to be more important information, and it was on conveying it that
I focused in the above fragments.
Sentence 16: I replaced the word "dreaded", which could be equivalent to
"obawiałam się", with the phrase "nie lubiłam", because the main character was
not afraid of her boss, so I think that in this sentence the accompanying
discomfort should be emphasized.
Sentence 18: I decided to specify that the main character is focused
on the events at work, because that is what the story implies, and the expression
"wydarzenia z pracy" sounds more natural in Polish than a word-for-word
translation. The same is true of Sentence 21., which would be unclear to the
Polish reader if translated literally.
51
Sentence 22: I decided to use domestication, converting the distance into
kilometers, which is given in miles in the source text. I did it so that the Polish
reader could more easily imagine the distance between the places described in
the story.
Sentence 24: I decided to replace the age of nineteen with the age
of majority, which is reached in Poland at the age of eighteen. The meaning
of the source text is preserved, and the sentence in Polish does not contain
repetitions and is not unclear to the reader.
The translation process often involves making changes not only at the
word level, but also at the sentence or phrase level. This subchapter describes
changes made to the target text at the phrase level, such as additions, omissions,
and others.

3.3.2. Omissions
In the translation process, the omission technique was also used, examples
of which are presented in Table 5.

The fragments removed from Sentences: 1., 4., 5., 8., 13., 14., 15., 19.,
21., 25., 26., 29. are redundant in Polish and at the same time do not deprive the
target sentences of the meaning contained in the source text. In the case
of Sentence 13., this notation would be particularly incomprehensible to a Polish
reader, because postal codes are written in a different form in Poland,
so I decided to omit it.
Sentence 1: The word "commuters" does not have its Polish equivalent,
and the descriptive translation of it as "osoby dojeżdżające do pracy" is not
necessary, as it follows from the earlier part of the text.
Sentence 3: I omitted the verb form “wybrał mnie” ("pick me out"),
because the part "właśnie mnie" suggests that it was the main character who was
chosen as the victim of the stalker.
The part of Sentence 6. is omitted because its meaning is covered later
in the sentence. The same is true for the verb “podjęłam” ("take") in Sentence
12., which was omitted thanks to the earlier use of the verb “znalazłam” ("find").
The fragments of sentences 7., 9., 10., 11., 16., 17., 18., 20., 22., 23., 24.,
27., 28. are omitted because they could be perceived by the Polish reader as "too
55
obvious" to be included in the translation. The same is true for the second part
of Sentence 12.
3.3.3. Condensations
The English language allows the use of words with almost identical
meanings to describe a given thing, which is not possible in Polish. For this
reason, during the translation process, I made several condensations of two
synonyms into one (Sentences 1., 3.). In the case of Sentence 2., I decided
to omit the fragment “or located me in some other ways”, because it is the same
as finding, which is expressed by the term “znaleźć”. The same is true for
Sentence 4., where the words “reflected” (“odbite”) and “glinting”
(“błyszczące”) have similar meanings in this context.
3.3.4. Explicitations
56
in the Polish translation of ‘Unfinished Business’. The change in Sentence 1. was
partly caused by grammatical changes, so I decided to adapt the selected part
to the rest of the source sentence, resulting in two coherent target sentences, the
meaning of which should be understood by the recipient. In the case of Sentence
2., I chose a descriptive explanation of the word 'inner', considering that the use
of the term 'wewnętrzny London' would be unclear and incorrect in Polish
version of the text.
3.3.5. Inversions
