1 What is it?

The Ocean Cleanup is a project born from Boyan

Slat, who at just 17 years old, proposed an effective
plan to clean the oceans of plastic.
The project aims to extract plastic waste from the
seas and oceans taking advantage of the natural
impulse of the wind and sea currents

2 How it affects animals

Turtles swallow plastic bags believing they are jellyfish.

-Millions of fish that we feed on have stomachs full of plastic.
-Some marine animals get caught in threads or plastic bags
and die .
-Animals can become poisoned, starved and suffocated.

3 How plastic affects people

The consequence of eating fishes that

they have plastics are very bad, it
deteriorates our nervous system, it can
cause leukemia cancer or other
diseases.

What does the interceptor project consist
of?
The interceptor is a floating system that has been designed to remove
all plastic waste before it is extracted from rivers. It consists of a 600-
metre-long "boat" and a 3.5-metre-deep screen to prevent
microplastics from escaping underneath. The screen is impenetrable
and creates a downward flow allowing marine life to follow its course.

5 What advantages does the interceptor have?

Allows the capture of small pieces of trash

Diverts large objects such as tree trunks
Guides pieces of trash onto a conveyor belt towards
storage bins
