C. in a southerly direction, because friction always in a direction opposite to the direction of
motion so as to oppose motion.

U2k03-P2 (a) Describe briefly how to measure the angle of static friction between a block and a
piece of wooden plank.
(b) As shown in Fig.U2k03-P2b, objects A and B of masses mA and mB respectively are placed
closely together on a fixed inclined plane with an angle of inclination . When a horizontal
force F is acting on object A, the two objects move upwards with uniform acceleration a
along the inclined plane. The coefficient of sliding friction is .
(i) Draw the force diagrams of A and B separately;
(ii) If F = 70 N, mA = 3 kg, mB = 5 kg,  = 30, and  = 0.2,
determine the value of a;
(iii)Find the force that A exerts on B during the upward motion. Fig.U2k03-P2b

U2k1-P3 A long plank with rough surface was inclined at an angle 30 with the horizontal plane.
An object P of 10 N was just able to rest on the inclined plank.
(a) When there was a small disturbance, object P began to slide down from rest with an
acceleration of 1 m s–2. Find the following between the plank and the object P:
(i) the static coefficient of friction;
(ii) the sliding coefficient of friction. [0.58; 0.46]
(b) The plank was lowered down to the horizontal position. Object P was connected to another
object Q by a sting over a pulley, as shown in Fig.U2k1-P3b. The third object X was put on
top of P and the system remained at rest. If Q is 12 N and the coefficient of friction between
P and X was 1.5 times that between P and the plank,
(i) Find the minimum weight of X.
(ii) If X was connected by a light string to the wall and object Y was added to Q so that P
moved at a uniform speed as shown in Fig.U2k1-P3b(ii). Find the weight of Y.
(iii) Find the acceleration of the system of P, Y and Q when P was out of contact with X.
