INTRODUCTION:
Biotechnology is the use of an organism ,a component of an
organism or other system to make a product for a specific
use.
• It is the manipulation of living organisms or parts of living
organisms to make products useful for humans.
• Biotechnology is a rapidly advancing field having a profound impact
on various aspects of our lives.
• Cell and gene technology is used to produce new characteristics.

• DNA vaccines
• Gene therapy
• Gene cloning
• Molecular Diagnosis
• Crop improvement
• Livestock
• Fisheries
• Environmental Sciences
PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS ON BIOTECHNOLOGY
The “Public perceptions on biotechnology” refers to:
‘how at large scale , society understands biotechnological
advancements , applications and their implementation.’
• In simple words , what people think about Biotechnology.
1.What are applications of biotechnology?
2.What are fields of biotechnology in future?
3.How we can use biotechnology in daily life?
CONT:
Public perceptions on biotechnology varies widely and are
influenced by various factors such as:
• Education
• Cultural
• Media
PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES:
• Public perceptions in developed countries ( US , Germany , Uk
, Australia etc.)
• Questionnaire of USA in 2007. it was revised in 7th June 2007
and accepted in 27th June 2007.
• Survey in supermarket and other areas.
• A number of questions of public opinions and attitudes about
biotechnology were asked in the survey.

These are the results of the developed country where illiteracy
rate is very low .
INDIA SURVEY ( DEVELOPING COUNTRY):
• Questioning was done about the genetically modified (G.M) or
genetically engineered (G.E) food and crops.
• Most of them didn't knew what it is and never heard about it.
1. 9.7% indicated that they are familiar.
2. 40.7 % were somewhat familiar
3. 47.8 were not familiar
• where 88.7% heard about BT cotton and 47% about BT Brinjal
