1. OVERVIEW:

1.1. Product Description:

The ECHODIS is a family of Static Ultrasonic Water Meter (SWM) dedicated to cold & hot water
metering.

For market reasons and previous type approvals these meters may have the following names for
specific countries:

- United Arab Emirates, Egypt, other Gulf Countries, Belgium: CF ECHO/ CF ECHO II

- The rest of the world: ECHODIS

ECHODIS/ CF ECHO/ CF ECHO II is divided into the following main sub-assemblies :

- An hydraulic sensor which measures the volume of water flowing through the water system.
It is a hot or cold water ultrasonic flow sensor that can be located in the inlet or in the outlet
pipe.

- An electronic integrator whose purpose is to compute the volume of water flowing, convert
the signal from the sensors to volumes over time.

It is a meter that can be powered by a battery or by mains.

A liquid crystal display allows the meter to display all useful parameters via a push button.

The meter complies with the EN14154 and OIML R49 standards and is designed in accordance of the
pressure directive PED 97/23/CE, the lead-free soldering 2002/95/CE and the transport of dangerous
goods directive (for Lithium Batteries).

1.2. Operation principle :

The operation principle of the product can be summarised through the following diagram :

2. HARDWARE DESCRIPTION:

2.1. The Integrator :

The integrator is composed of two main parts that can be separated for technical reasons, the base,
containing the metrology board, and the cover, indispensable for the Human Machine Interface (HMI). It
contains the metrology board and the user interface. It carries the legal information in the front label
regarding the meter and the base unveils various seals placements assuring the integrity of all
metrology data.

The plastic enclosures are made of Polycarbonate (PC), the integrator carries an IP65 protection and
the flow sensor IP68. The enclosure can either be directly mounted on the flow sensor or against a wall
using the wall fixing device. This feature allows high flexibility for ergonomic access to meter
information.

ECHODIS/ CF Echo/ CF Echo II meter is composed of an integrator and an flow sensor, where the two
sub-assemblies are connected through a four wire cable.

2.2. The Flow Sensor:

The flow sensor is also composed of two, but non

separable, parts. A first part which is the measurement
flow tube and the electronic intelligent ultrasonic
acquisition board. Its flow measurement behaviour is
the same independently of the meter nominal flow or
diameter.

It is composed of:

flow tube made of brass or bronze

ultrasonic ceramic transducers

an intelligent electronic board

gaskets and nuts

a cover enclosing the assembly

a label with metrology data

metrology seals assuring the integrity of the enclosure

a cable connecting to the integrator

This sensor is linked to the integrator through a four wire cable.

The four wires are for the following purposes:

2 wires for power supply – red and black wire

2 other wires for the flow information – blue and white

• the 2 wires concern a Signal Data link between the two electronic boards, the integrator and the flow
sensor one. Do note that in ECHODIS/ CF ECHO/ CF ECHO II there are no "pulses" between the flow
sensor and the integrator but digital data signals. So, in no way this assembly can be exchanged or
tested alone. Both a mechanical anti-tamper device as well as two control numbers link these boards
together preventing any exchange. The cable works therefore as if the circuit board in the flow sensor
and the one in the integrator are an extension of each other. Case an exchange has been made a major
metrology alarm is raised.

Never carry out welding operations close to the meter. It may seriously damage it.
Leave your meter in its packaging until all painting and rinsing operations are finished.
The flow meter can be mounted either on horizontal or vertical pipe without any influence on the metrology.
Always use pipes and seals correctly specified for use with your network pressures and diameters.
The use of upstream and downstream isolation valves as well as a drain-cock are recommended to ease the
installation and replacement operations.

2.4. Power Supply

2.4.1. Battery Module

The ECHODIS/ CF Echo/ CF Echo II can be powered by a 3.6 Volt Lithium/Manganese dioxide
(LiMnO2) battery (Area 1).

The battery is composed of one or several active elements assembled in a PCB, design for that
purpose. A 2 pin female connector is available for connection with the metrology board (Area 1) – see
§2.1.2

The battery carries a label informing the type of battery and the year of manufacturing.

Depending on the requested lifetime of the product, 2 different battery types are available, 2xAA size
with a maximum of 6 years life time and 1xC size battery with a maximum of 12 years life time.

The life-time of the batteries is directly linked to the sampling frequencies set in the calculator. In this
sense we can increase the meter’s precision by increasing this frequencies (reducing the period in the
table below). Climatic and environmental conditions may significantly modify the batteries’ life-time.

The M-BUS optional board allows the user to read all the parameters inside the product according to
IEC 870-5 and CEN EN1434 (M-Bus) standards.

The M-Bus module manages the following baud rates :

300 bd 1200 bd 2400 bd 9600 bd

It is necessary to communicate with the product at the baud rate programmed in the configuration. (No
master baud rate detection).

The baud rate value can be modified with the baud rate programming frame in all states (lock or
unlocked) or through the calculator push buttons

2.5.4. 2 External Water Meters input

Water meters module provide volume indexes of two external water meters with Low Frequency (LF)
pulse values. At each received pulse, a specific pulse weight per entry is added to each water meter
indexes.

Each input can be programmed with a pulse value that will also determine the display decimals
resolution in m³:

1 2.5 10 25 100 250

L/imp L/imp L/imp L/imp L/imp L/imp

V
2 2 1 0 0 0
(decimals)
The last line represents the number of decimals programmed per pulse weight.

The default value for each input is 1 L/p.

The table above is for your information. All different decimals in this table are calculated based on
EN1434 standard, i.e., within the normal working range (Qc to Qs) the meter’s least significant digit
should not be increased of more than one unit at each step.

2.5.5. Modem
The modem function works as soon as a "reading" telephone number is programmed in EEPROM using
the MBus modem frame. Once the connection has been established, the meter will then be able to call
out at a specified date and time to the pre-programmed number. Once the communication is established
the "server" will act as an MBus master and will directly communicate with the meter.

Using CFCS modem module you’ll be able to manage all different tasks concerning the modem.

In case of a modem board installed but no telephone number is entered in the meter memory, there’s an
“option board alarm” raised (alarm number 7 in the flow alarms display).

When the modem board is installed, the good telephone number programmed but, for some reason, the
“call-out” date is programmed in the past or not programmed at all, the meter will automatically call the
registered phone number. The modem’s objective is to re-synchronise itself with a time reference, in this
case the modem server collecting the calls.

When the call is picked-up the date and time of the meter will immediately be reset and its call-out time
re-programmed with a good date.

If the call is not picked-up the modem will continue trying 16 times per hour until the call is picked-up.

In case of installation on a CF55, a second phone number is available and if a number is registered the
meter will call-out every-time a flow alarm occurs.

3. Features/Display/Software Description:
The ECHODIS/ CF Echo/ CF Echo II features a full range of data relating to water metering. Its
software is designed to ease use and allows the measurement and analysis of the most relevant
parameters.

The software features three modes:

The user mode

• The normal state of the meter when in use on the field. The meter data is accessible to the
user and does not require the opening of the enclosure

The programming mode

• This mode is dedicated to the factory, or to some identified and authorised places such as
primary or periodical verification laboratories. In this mode the meter is “unlocked” and the
EEPROM writing enabled both in the data as well as in the metrology area. Operations like
modification of correction type (hot / cold) or programming of energy register are then possible.

• This state is identified by a blinking segment between on the display’s top left corner.

The option board programming mode

• This mode is dedicated to the option boards and appears only when an option board has been
acknowledge. The display will show the parameters that are possible for change such as setting
the volume register of the external water meters, the baud rate, etc.

3.1. Human Machine Interface

Display is switched on when the following events occur :

¤ Main pushbutton is pushed.

¤ State switching to production mode.

¤ Reset event.

Display is switched off when the following events occur :

¤ After 4 minutes in normal mode without any action on the pushbutton

¤ If low battery state is detected (~3.2V measured through voltage converter)

Volume index is limited to 7 digits (not depending on the number of decimals). The number of decimals
is fixed and can never be changed.

The volume is calculated with a cm3 resolution and although only 7 digits are visible the internal register
carries 14.

The least significant digit is 10-7 and the most significant one 10+7.

This register is never accessed by the user and a special reading tool must be used to obtain the
complete data.

Highlighted visible numbers on display

Internal Register 9 999 999 999 999 9 0.1 cm3

Display in m3 with 0 decimals 9 999 999 . 999 999 9 m3

This means that even if the register seems to have reached its limit and gets back to zero, in fact it is
only the visible part that is zero as the next significant number (not visible) has just been increased.
