The ECHODIS is a family of Static Ultrasonic Water Meter (SWM) dedicated to cold & hot water
metering.
For market reasons and previous type approvals these meters may have the following names for
specific countries:
- United Arab Emirates, Egypt, other Gulf Countries, Belgium: CF ECHO/ CF ECHO II
- An hydraulic sensor which measures the volume of water flowing through the water system.
It is a hot or cold water ultrasonic flow sensor that can be located in the inlet or in the outlet
pipe.
- An electronic integrator whose purpose is to compute the volume of water flowing, convert
the signal from the sensors to volumes over time.
A liquid crystal display allows the meter to display all useful parameters via a push button.
The meter complies with the EN14154 and OIML R49 standards and is designed in accordance of the
pressure directive PED 97/23/CE, the lead-free soldering 2002/95/CE and the transport of dangerous
goods directive (for Lithium Batteries).
The operation principle of the product can be summarised through the following diagram :
Electronic Integrator
Hydraulic Sensor
V = XXXXX m3
The volume flow is measured using ultrasonic signals by the measurement of transit time between two
ultrasonic transducers.
The plastic enclosures are made of Polycarbonate (PC), the integrator carries an IP65 protection and
the flow sensor IP68. The enclosure can either be directly mounted on the flow sensor or against a wall
using the wall fixing device. This feature allows high flexibility for ergonomic access to meter
information.
ECHODIS/ CF Echo/ CF Echo II meter is composed of an integrator and an flow sensor, where the two
sub-assemblies are connected through a four wire cable.

sensor and the integrator but digital data signals. So, in no way this assembly can be exchanged or
tested alone. Both a mechanical anti-tamper device as well as two control numbers link these boards
together preventing any exchange. The cable works therefore as if the circuit board in the flow sensor
and the one in the integrator are an extension of each other. Case an exchange has been made a major
metrology alarm is raised.

The battery is composed of one or several active elements assembled in a PCB, design for that
purpose. A 2 pin female connector is available for connection with the metrology board (Area 1) – see
§2.1.2
The battery carries a label informing the type of battery and the year of manufacturing.
Depending on the requested lifetime of the product, 2 different battery types are available, 2xAA size
with a maximum of 6 years life time and 1xC size battery with a maximum of 12 years life time.
The life-time of the batteries is directly linked to the sampling frequencies set in the calculator. In this
sense we can increase the meter’s precision by increasing this frequencies (reducing the period in the
table below). Climatic and environmental conditions may significantly modify the batteries’ life-time.

Default 12 1xC 3
When the optional board is connected, the meter detects the presence of the option board entering
the "option programming mode" once the service button is pushed. Then the user can program with the
push buttons the different parameters related to each board.

The output is optic-insulated, delivering a pulse each time the last digit of the volume index is
incremented.
It is equivalent to a floating contact non polarised with the following electrical specification :
Frequency : at each increment of the last displayed digit of the energy watering index.
Note : if the last displayed digit increment frequency is higher than 1 Hz, the repetition pulses are
buffered.
Maximum ON resistance : 20 Ω
It is necessary to communicate with the product at the baud rate programmed in the configuration. (No
master baud rate detection).
The baud rate value can be modified with the baud rate programming frame in all states (lock or
unlocked) or through the calculator push buttons

The last line represents the number of decimals programmed per pulse weight.
The table above is for your information. All different decimals in this table are calculated based on
EN1434 standard, i.e., within the normal working range (Qc to Qs) the meter’s least significant digit
should not be increased of more than one unit at each step.
2.5.5. Modem
The modem function works as soon as a "reading" telephone number is programmed in EEPROM using
the MBus modem frame. Once the connection has been established, the meter will then be able to call
out at a specified date and time to the pre-programmed number. Once the communication is established
the "server" will act as an MBus master and will directly communicate with the meter.
Using CFCS modem module you’ll be able to manage all different tasks concerning the modem.
In case of a modem board installed but no telephone number is entered in the meter memory, there’s an
“option board alarm” raised (alarm number 7 in the flow alarms display).
When the modem board is installed, the good telephone number programmed but, for some reason, the
“call-out” date is programmed in the past or not programmed at all, the meter will automatically call the
registered phone number. The modem’s objective is to re-synchronise itself with a time reference, in this
case the modem server collecting the calls.
When the call is picked-up the date and time of the meter will immediately be reset and its call-out time
re-programmed with a good date.
If the call is not picked-up the modem will continue trying 16 times per hour until the call is picked-up.
In case of installation on a CF55, a second phone number is available and if a number is registered the
meter will call-out every-time a flow alarm occurs.
• The normal state of the meter when in use on the field. The meter data is accessible to the
user and does not require the opening of the enclosure
• This mode is dedicated to the factory, or to some identified and authorised places such as
primary or periodical verification laboratories. In this mode the meter is “unlocked” and the
EEPROM writing enabled both in the data as well as in the metrology area. Operations like
modification of correction type (hot / cold) or programming of energy register are then possible.
• This state is identified by a blinking segment between on the display’s top left corner.
• This mode is dedicated to the option boards and appears only when an option board has been
acknowledge. The display will show the parameters that are possible for change such as setting
the volume register of the external water meters, the baud rate, etc.

To move from loop to loop, press the front button for at least 2 seconds
3.2. Volume
The volume is calculated with a cm3 resolution and although only 7 digits are visible the internal register
carries 14.
The least significant digit is 10-7 and the most significant one 10+7.
This register is never accessed by the user and a special reading tool must be used to obtain the
complete data.
This means that even if the register seems to have reached its limit and gets back to zero, in fact it is
only the visible part that is zero as the next significant number (not visible) has just been increased.
Example:
Computation conditions :
¤ Volume computation is not restricted by alarms, each volume pulse is taken in account.
Nevertheless, some alarms cut the volume pulses output:

3.3. Flow
Peak data is calculated over an integration period that can be set between 1 minute up to 1440 minutes
(24h).
The integration period is the same for the three existing indexes:
Flow
The values are calculated within fixed time width windows, representing the average value.
The peak values are time stamped and at every FDR they are stored in memory and reset to zero for
the new month. They are readable through the communication port but not displayed.
The peak values are set and reset by the communication ports.

Concerning the indexes above, the energy and volume are always stored and displayed. Those of the
external water meters are stored and displayed only if the respective option board is in use and as
previously said, the peak fixed date reading values are always stored but not displayed. These values
can be download by communication means (MBus). The CF Meter software, CF CS can be use to
collect the specific MBus FDR frames.
The FDR action is effectively done at the end of the last day of each month (at 00:00).
When an option board is recognized, the first screen related to this option board is displayed.
Several values can be modified by the mean of the two push buttons (A and B).
You can enter this special installation procedure at any time by pressing push button B for over 2
seconds. The same action to exit.
Please note that once entered the special installation procedure, push button A is used to scroll through
the values and B to validate and move over to the next one.
