Land preservation awaits vote
December 10, 2004 Section: LOCAL NEWS Page: B1 By Harold A. Gushue Jr.

STURBRIDGE - Four requests related to use of Community Preservation Act Funds, including $212,000 for preserving land as open space, are among 19 articles to come before voters at a special town meeting set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tantasqua Regional Senior High School. The $212,000 is to buy about 8-1/2 acres on the north side of Quinebaug River at 80 Route 15. The land, known as the Shepard Parcel, was first considered for purchase in 1995. Penny Dumas, chairwoman of the Community Preservation Act Committee, said the land is near 125 acres owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She said it has walking paths. "We'd like to preserve it so that residents can enjoy walking and cross-country skiing," she said. She said the land was considered for purchase in 1995, but that was before the Community Preservation Act funds and money was not available. A second request seeks to use $10,000 from the preservation funds for appraisals of property being considered for purchase in the future. The third request seeks to use $3,900 of the funds to place granite-wood signs identifying the Town Common as a Historic District. Mrs. Dumas said two signs would be placed on Route 131 notifying those of the district and a third would be on Haynes Street. The final request is for $40,000 to digitize and provide a laminated copy of town meeting records from 1738 through 1865, as well as a CD of each document. The project is a continuation of one that started earlier this year with the digitizing of the first Proprietor's Book. The Tantasqua Study Committee is asking for $25,000 to hire a financial consultant to review the costs associated
