The impact of online learning on the development of speaking skill

Abstract :
The concept of learning a language using technology has permitted to both learners
and language instructors to invistigate the effectiveness of the online learning.for
exemple ,due to technology, there is computer mediated activities that furnish an online
platform for learners. As we know the majority of students suffer from shyness, luck of self
confidence so this platform give them the opportunity to have an individualized learning
environment. This paper aims to search and invistigate the effectiveness of the online learning
approach that could effect the speaking proficiency of EFL students .A total of 40
participants of two groups of third Year english students took part in this study for 5 week
intensive for 20h.The collection of data was carried out using the quantitative methods,
scors and speaking marks were used to show comparative speaking results and also
questionnaires, test, and interview were used. The finding from the research method indicate
that ,the experienced group who studies online, performed better than the non experienced
group, in terms of improvement of speaking , and listening skills .so the implications of this
study are that online learning programs shows great influence on speaking performance and
also give a strong self confidence among the students in the development of their speaking
skill.

KEY words :

 COMPUTER – mediated communication

 Individuel learning
 Oral conversation
 Online learning
Introduction :
In terms of developing oral skills, the use of computer mediated activities are
undeniably beneficial in making the learning process more effective and meaningful for EFL
learners. Current global development has increased number of opportunities for instructors to
use online learning approaches to assist learners in becoming more independent in their
language acquisition. Numerous studies have shown that information, communication and
technology « ICT » has a Positive impact on education because it makes teaching and learning
more effective, interesting, interactive, meaningful, and motivating.

With such availability of such applications in Web, the present study aims to
investigate the effectiveness of online learning programs on helping EFL learners at the
territory level to further improve their speaking performance to enable online sessions, for
instance Skype is used as a tool to provide new ways of communicating with different users.

The general description of the particular online speaking program is further discussed
in this research.

Literature review :

Online learning has expended not only in writing but also in oral discourse, over the
last decade, there has Been an increase in research on the use of audios for language teaching
and learning. Aside from this related study number of complied online language learning with
the use of audio have emerged with the use of this later. These studies involved online
language learning between instructors and learners. As a means of communication, an audio
platform makes the use of Skype as a means of communication between language learners
and instructors to further development of learners oral skill. Skype was used as a video chat to
improve the proficiency of English language. Those online sessions have a great advantage on
learners because they can interact socially and receive authentic oral input from peers and
others.

Accordingly to the research peer, interaction provides an online learning platform for
practicing the ‘listening, speaking, and negotiating skills that other learners can benefit from
the implicit feedback that they provide to one another especially when communication is
taking place between different levels of learners.

Statement of the Problem :

English is used as a foreign language in Algeria, and it is also taught as a foreign
language (EFL) to students at higher education institutions and even middle schools. English
proficiency is still low among language learners. This is evident among EFL students who
have a limited command of the English language. Due to a variety of factors, learners often
have difficulties in sharing their ideas in English rather than with their mother tongue
(Zakaria, 2008)

Speaking or conversational exercises in groups are inefficient in this study because of

time constraints and the huge number of learners in a language classroom. As a result, when
students speak in front of their classmates, they are influenced by uncontrollable anxiety .that
is to say EFL students are typically hesitant to use English because they are afraid of making
mistakes in front of Classmates. Hence, the learners are deafeningly quiet and through time
refuse to talk. This can be seen in EFL students at schools or universities in Algeria, because
of Learners lack of confidence to communicate in English. Which is not professional for
them since classes are taught in English,so their lack of English speaking experience will
influence their academic achievement.HenceAdditional practice in a personalised Learning
environment is encouraged since students will be able to practice their Oral abilities at their
own speed and time, without having to worry about being judged.

So that to help students enhance their speech abilities, the English Proficiency in
Conversation (EPiC) online program was created. The entire potential and outcomes of using
this online speaking platform, however, have yet to be scientifically investigated. And not only
for that but also all programs and learning are now all available online in English.
Hypothesis :
This study aims to find the impact of online learning that can be effective on the
development of speaking skill of EFL learners. So this study tries invistigate the following
research questions :

 Are there any differences between learners of online programs and

learners of classroom interaction ?.
 What is the reaction of students who participated in those online
programs ?.
 How can online learning affect learners development of speaking skill ?

Methodology :
The study used experimental quantitative method. Quantitative research focused on
nderstanding social phenomena from the perspective of the human participants in natural
settings. So quantitative means that a method was adopted to compare the oral performance
sscores between students who experience online programs and students who are not under the
programs. In order to further investigate the students’ feedback on the impact of online
learning on the development of speaking skill.

Participants :

The study was conducted in the department of English at Abdarahmane Mira

University of Béjaia during the academic year 2021/2022. Participants of this study were third
year students who received the speaking courses. The research was carried out with a total of
40 participants,. The sample was devided into two groups of 20 students. The controled
group, they were studying English in class that is to say face to face interaction, where as the
experimental group had an extra online sessions on the platform. The findings of this were
compared between the two groups.

Process of collecting data :

The study is experimental in nature, so the process of collecting data was a test,
questionnaire, and an interview. The questionnaire and the test were used to collect students
perception towards online application in speaking skill, which were shared online with the
participants. In fact this tool provide the research with an amount on information from the
choosing sample. While the interview is taken after the speaking learning process is done.

The following list shows 2 questions of the interview :

1. What are the challenges you face during those sessions ?

2. The online programme helps truly the development of your speaking skill ?

Results :
The tables below are answering the questions that are related to the research topic of how
does the online learning had an impact on the development of speaking skill.

Table (1) :Do you face challenges during online sessions ?

Effectifs Pourcentage

yes 15 78,9

Valide no 4 21,1

Total 19 100,0

The 78,9 of those participants are facing a lot of challenges in their online sessions even
though they like it huns even those who do not like these programs face challenges.

Table (2) :The online programme helps truly the development of your speaking skill ?

Effectifs Pourcentage

yes 15 78,9

Valide
no 4 21,1

Total 19 100,0

The table above Presents tha amount of participants (78,9) who were really affected by such
programs.
Conclusion :

Based on the implications, and the findings of this study, it is recommended that
online speaking should be incorporated in English proficiency since it benefits the
development of speaking skill among EFL learners.

In conclusion, this study confirms and answers the hypothesis as well as the research
questions that explored the effectiveness of online programs that impact positively students
oral performance. Moreover, the results suggest that researchers should prepare a longer
research time in investigating the use of online learning process so that it rise the level of
effectiveness in term of speaking among EFL learners.
