CHAPTER ONE

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

(isang more lang gamitin nak)

In today’s current time more and more smartphones are breaking through

technological boundaries, making most if not every function of other electronic devices

accessible to the hand-held smartphone. This brings up the question of whether a

smartphone is capable of doing the tasks and functions of other electronic devices.

Smartphones are not only portable, but they are in fact mobile, which is a degree higher

in an object's mobility. The difference between devices being portable and mobile, is

that a device that is mobile focuses on allowing its user to carry it around with ease and

have no necessary wires connected to them, unlike being portable where the

requirement is only for users to be able to carry the device around (Roseberry, 2021).

6 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Smartphones being mobile is one of the reasons for its efficiency, because with the

capability of being able to perform so many different functions, one would think it would

require a massive piece of technology to achieve such a feat. Thus, smartphones help a

lot of people in performing their daily tasks, and have become nearly integral in living a

modern life (Provazza, 2019).

In the year 2021, consumers have spent 72.3% of mobile time on smartphones (Dolan,

2022). This means that smartphones have been integrated into the average consumer

in order to function in their everyday lives. Middle to late adolescents use their

smartphones to do many activities such as, playing games, watching videos, making

and reading documents, taking photos, social media, being informed, filming videos,

communicating with others and much more. It is not a surprise that most adolescents

heavily rely on their smartphones for most of their tasks.

However, some features and functions of the smartphone such as a speaker, camera,

data processing, telecommunication, gaming and many more, can be found in other

electronic devices. Every year the smartphone industry constantly pushes itself to

improve these functions, sometimes focusing on one over the others, but regardless

would strive to rival electronic devices that’s sole purpose is to perform a specific

function. With smartphones these days becoming this advanced, perhaps it would be

about time to simply buy a smartphone for all these functions.

This research aims to figure out the capabilities of smartphones in performing the

functions of other electronic devices based on the experience of the middle to late

adolescents’ usage of them.

Statement of the Problem

(sure ka na may .com payan?)

According to Oberlo.com (2022), the estimated number of smartphone users are around

6.6 billion, making smartphones a widely used product. Regardless of brand, each

smartphone assists its user in performing tasks. However, smartphones have become

so advanced that some functions they bring may rival those of other electronic devices

that specialize in one function. The goal of the study is to identify the capability of a

smartphone in performing the functions of other electronic devices to become a decent

substitute for them, in the use of the middle to late adolescents. The following

statements are to help guide the researcher in concluding the study.

1. The performance quality of smartphones in doing tasks of other electronic

devices in the opinion of the middle to late adolescents.(what specific task/s?)

2. Middle to late adolescents’ satisfaction when using smartphones as a substitute

for other electronic devices. (What kind of devices?)

3. The functions that a smartphone can improve on, based on the middle to late

adolescents’ preferences.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

1. (You should be more specific with the scope kasi wala kang info about it kasi if hindi mo lalagyan ng
scope or the area kung saan mo lang ifofocus yung scope mo meaning lahat ng 15-17 and 18-24 years
old ay respondents mo).

2. (in Scope and Delimitation ang dinidiscuss lang dito is kung saan mo gagawin ang research mo and
sino ang mga participats mo, a little information like ages 15-17 anong part lang ba ng study ang
paticipations nila the same sa 18-24. And sa end part you can indicate na those who are below 14 below
and 25 abovwe are no longer part of the study. Also pag sa school mo gagawin you can also say na other
schools, are not part of the study. BE MORE SPECIFIC HERE)

The research is limited to the study of smartphones in the use of the middle to late

adolescents. The respondents of the research would be people ages 15-17, middle

adolescents, and 18-24, late adolescents. The other electronic devices to be examined

with the smartphone would be the camera, for the smartphone also has the ability to

capture images, the portable speaker, because every smartphone contains a speaker,

the telephone, because smartphones allows users to communicate from long distances,

and the portable computer, because smartphones also have the ability to process data

and run programs. During the interview, the researcher will only be asking questions

that relate to the usage of smartphones, how they function for the middle to late

adolescent, and how well they perform the functions of other electronic devices.

Significance of the Study

(Follow the APA format type of writing this part)

( a little information about the paper and sino sino ang mag bebenefit dito ex. Students, Mobile phone
companies, Businessman and others)

(Write the significance of the study by looking into the general contribution of your research,
such as its importance to society, then proceed downwards—towards the individual level, and
that may include yourself as a researcher. You start broadly, then taper off gradually to a
specific group or person.)

According to Mitchel (2022), with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the world’s

economy, and other events that have surfaced in recent years, such as the Russo-

Ukraine war, prices of certain commodities have risen. Some of these commodities,

9 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
such as semiconductors, are required in manufacturing electronics, and them being

undersupplied has led the price of electronics to rise. With electronics becoming

expensive, some people may need to save their money on the devices they own or wish

to purchase in the future. Smartphones being multifunctional and mobile, may be a

cheaper option for consumers to purchase. However, with the lack of study and

research on the capabilities of smartphones in performing the tasks of other electronic

devices, consumers may hesitate to save their money and opt to purchase a specific

electronic device instead. This study aims to interview middle to late adolescents on

their usage of their smartphones so that the researcher may come to a conclusion

regarding the limits and capabilities a smartphone can offer as a substitute to other

electronic devices.

Theoretical Framework

1. The market’s acceptance of new technological advancements

As stated by Barkoczi and Lobontiu (2017) technology users would postpone

their purchase on new devices due to considering the differences between the future

models and current models. It is also stated that consumers’ decision in making a new

purchase is attributed to the cost and usefulness of the product. Thus, it would be a

wise marketing strategy for smartphone manufacturers to introduce devices with

enhanced functionality or a reasonable price of a newer model (N. Barkoczi and G.

Lobontiu, 2017).

10 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Smartphone manufacturers often present consumers with new technology to enhance

the experience of customers in utilizing their products. As stated by Barkoczi and

Lobontiu (2017), customers are more likely to buy devices that prove useful to them,

and are at a reasonable price. With smartphones becoming more advanced, the

functionality they provide also improves through the use of newly discovered

technology. Thus, with a reasonable price, customers may purchase the newly released

products with better functionality. However, these improved functionalities may already

have been present in other electronic devices. But, with the smartphone already

containing these functionalities along with many more useful features, a consumer may

be swayed into sticking with the smartphone instead. Especially when purchasing

another electronic device would cost more. And as stated by Barkoczi and Lobontiu

(2017), customers prefer devices at a reasonable price. Thus, meaning they would

prefer a more cost efficient option.

4. Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. Smartphones and Electronic devices comparison

11 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

As seen in figure 1., smartphones already contain functions that the shown

electronic devices also have. Because all these functions are already available in the

smartphone, it is pointed out that the choice of just using a smartphone is more cost-

efficient than purchasing multiple electronic devices. However, the electronic devices

are pointed out to be of higher quality. This is because the electronic devices only need

to focus on one specific function. Therefore, electronic devices may utilize all its

resources and size capacity to improve the quality of the functions it provides. This

creates a choice for the middle to late adolescent, whether they purchase for cost

12 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
efficiency and save more, or to purchase for high quality functions, but spend more.

Which is why this study aims to find out whether or not the middle to late adolescent is

willing to utilize the smartphone’s capabilities in performing the functions that other

electronic devices prioritize. And to know the choice of the middle to late adolescent

between choosing to save money or spend more for higher quality.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

History and evolution of Smartphones

In an article written by William L. Hosch (2022), the first smartphone was

designed by IBM and sold by BellSouth in 1993, and since then it has undergone many
changes. In its first release the smartphone designed by IBM had already included a
touchscreen, something still applied to the smartphones of today. It also included some
basic functions and features such as calendar, address book, and calculator. Hosch
stated that as the market continued to mature, some materials used to manufacture
smartphones have become cheaper. Thus, the smartphone industry was able to
advance, allowing users to have access to the internet, and with the introduction of
“3G”, many more advanced services became accessible. 3G allowed users to send
photos, videos, music files, emails and many more (W. Hosch, 2022). As stated by
Hosch, smartphones contained keyboards which first began as a physical pad that
contained the standard “QWERTY” arrangements, or a number pad that had multiple
functions. However, when more advanced technology and programming were
discovered, it transitioned to virtual keyboards found on the touchscreens of the phone.
The GPS location chip of the smartphones were also utilized to develop augmented
reality, where a smartphone is able to overlay the phone’s camera view to add virtual
objects on the phone screen (W. Hosch, 2022). As more and more technology is
discovered, the capabilities and functions of a smartphone may still improve.

According to Charlie Dyroff (2018), it is hard to imagine a time without

smartphones. With all the features it has provided the consumers, some being taken for
granted, smartphones have become quite the necessity for living a modern life.
However, all these features have undergone many changes that took long periods of
time to achieve. The article discusses how the cellphone has evolved into what it is
today, and how it looked like over the years. According to the article, the first ever
cellphone was created in 1973, which weighed over two pounds, and can only work for
30 minutes after 10 hours of charging. In the year 2000, Nokia entered the market with
the Nokia 6000 series, a durable and much smaller cellphone that perfectly fits in one’s
palm and pockets. This cellphone took the market by storm as consumers found it very
convenient, affordable, and even allowed them to browse the internet. The first camera
phone was released by a company known as Sprint in 2002, this cellphone was able to
capture photos at 640 x 480 pixels. In 2004, RAZR introduced a slim and sleek flip
phone that was considered to be a fashion statement along with being a means of
communication. The year 2007 was when the first Iphone was developed, this cellphone
was the beginning of cellphones transitioning to become a multipurpose tool for people
to rely on, rather than just a means for communication. The cellphone offered internet
access, a virtual keyboard on the touch screen, and many more features. However, in

14 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
2010 the iphone 4 was released. It featured a slim and futuristic design with a battery
capacity to match the usage of the consumer back then. Finally, when Apple released
the Iphone 8 a few years later, it featured a very durable body and beautiful glass,
perfect for the type of usage consumers use it today for. The Iphone 8 even featured
wireless charging and water resistance.

Future of Smartphone features and functions

In an article written by Ayush Jalan (2022), features that are sought after by the
consumers are listed and explained. These features are wanted by the consumers but
are not yet available in the market. The list begins with the idea of having a Graphene
based battery. The current smartphones today are made from lithium-ion, which of
course has been reliable for the past years, but there can be better options such as the
graphene based batteries. It is stated that graphene is a material that is lighter, tougher,
more flexible, more conductive, and has a higher energy capacity. This will allow the
smartphone to be slimmer in design and have a longer battery life (A. Jalan, 2022).
Another feature mentioned is to improve under-display front cameras. Under-display
front cameras already exist in the market, however, their performance is still far from
being part of the mainstream. Images captured by this type of camera tends to be blurry
or of less quality. Jalan (2022) states that the solution to this would be to improve the
display panels of the smartphone. Next in the list was the development of a completely
bezel-less display, wherein the screen of the smartphone is completely a display and no
longer has any bezels. It is stated that the Iphone X was able to succeed in this upgrade
by folding the display panel back into the device itself (A. Jalan, 2022). However, the
front cam of the Iphone X has become quite recognizeable due to this, even more
recognizable than an average android phone. Another feature introduced is known as
the air charging, wherein a smartphone would be completely wireless and free from
restrictions when needing to charge. This is done through the transfer of energy via the
air. Compared to wireless charging, this method of charging a phone is completely
unrestricted and would not need an energy dock to leave the phone at. As stated in the
article, companies such as Xiaomi and Motorola have demonstrated the possibility of
this mode of charging, however, it is far from becoming commercially available (A.
Jalan, 2022). The reduction of bloatware was also mentioned in the article, and finally to
lessen the carbon footprint of manufacturing a phone. Since a smartphone requires a lot
of energy and materials to create, the environment is harmed each time a new
smartphone is released from the factory. However, many companies are already
working to lessen the carbon footprint their smartphones produce. They do this by
recycling some material, and rethinking the supply chain. Unfortunately, this initiative is
still not enough (A. Jalan, 2022).

According to an article written by Ryan Jones (2021), Qualcomm is launching a

new processing chip known as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, this chip will be powering a
number of phones that will bring new features to the smartphones. A feature mentioned
in the article is an always-on camera, wherein this chip will enable smartphones to have
their cameras always open and ready. This will make scanning QR codes, and

15 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
unlocking the phone with facial recognition much easier because the user will no longer
need to open their phone first. Another feature mentioned as an improved video
shooting, where the camera is said to be able to record videos in 8K HDR. Along with
this feature, the “Video Bokeh Effect” will also be available, which will allow an
automatic blur to the background of a video. This feature allows the subject of a video to
stand out more clearly from its background. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also brings
improved performance. It is stated that Qualcomm claims that the CPU will be getting a
20% performance boost, while the GPU receives a 30% performance boost. With these
improvements, running applications as well as playing games become much smoother.
The new chip also features Qualcomm aptX Lossless Technology for CD-quality
wireless audio. Which simply means that using bluetooth devices for audio listening will
be of the same quality with a wired listening device. Finally, the new chip features faster
5G connectivity, which states to be able to run 10Gbps, enabling fast download speeds,
and would allow the user to download 4k videos in seconds.

An article written by Catherine Hiley (2022) describes the future where

smartphones are heading to, the new features they may bring, and the new technology
they may present to the consumers. According to Hiley (2022), foldable phones have
already been in the market thanks to Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola. However, with
their inconsistent quality and expensive prices, many people are put off by the idea of
foldable phones. With technology advancing further and companies discovering more
reliable functions for the foldables, people may be attracted to them in the near future.
Another feature mentioned in the article is the creation of a Holographic display.
Holograms have become quite the recurring feature in sci-fi movies, such as Star Wars
and Ironman (C. Hiley, 2022). A prototype. known as HoloFlex, has already been
created but is still in development. So far, the features of the HoloFlex is the ability to
bend the screen allowing users to view and interact with the 3D display from different
angles.

Most used smartphone applications

In an article written by Ben Moore and Jordan Minor (2022), Netflix was hailed to
be the best streaming service for 2022. The reason for this is because Netflix contains a
large variety of TV shows and Movies, along with their own originals that have been
critically acclaimed. It is also stated that Netflix’s constantly growing library of original
works makes it outclass every other streaming service. Netflix also offers the most-high
quality movies of any other streaming services (Moore and Minor, 2022). The price of a
Netflix subscription is $9.99 per month, allowing any subscriber to stream unlimited
standard-definition movies and shows from a single device. The premium plan however,
costs $19.99 per month. This subscription tier allows the users to stream 4K content if
available for the show or movie. Netflix is also one of the few streaming services that
allows their users to download the wanted content offline.

According to an article written by Shopify (2022), Facebook still remains to be the

most popular and used social media platform. The article discusses the most popular

16 of 22
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY COLLEGE-PARAÑAQUE

social media platforms, and which of them is best for marketing small businesses. The
article states that the latest statistics still continue to show that Facebook is still highest
in terms of social media usage, with 2.94 billion active users in 2022. Around 27 percent
of Android users worldwide use the Facebook app daily (Shopify, 2022). Ranking
second after Facebook is Youtube with 2.48 billion active users. An estimated 720,000
hours of video are uploaded to the platform everyday. listed as third and fourth, the
platforms WhatsApp and Instagram have two billion, and 1.44 billion users respectively
(Shopify, 2022). Both platforms are owned by Facebook:Meta.
