Introduction to the Old Testament BI-5003, 3 credits

Course Description

This course provides an analysis of the Old Testament within the


literary and theological context of the whole Bible. It focuses on the
theological, literary, and historical dimensions of the Old Testament
text and story; draws theological connections to major themes and
figures of the Old Testament and its biblical theological emphases;
and makes application to modern Christianity, both corporate
(church) and personal (spiritual growth).

Each of the book in the OT are dealt from the following perspectives:

 Historical background
 Literary analysis
 Theological message
 How the book relates to the New Testament
Required texts for the course

 Tremper Longman III and Raymond B. Dillard. An Introduction


to the Old Testament, 2nd ed. Zondervan, 2006. (ISBN
0310263417)
All the required texts can be found as online previews (see
the resource folder), so you can start your course immediately.
However, you should order hard copies of these books as soon as
you can. Very affordable used books can be found from
the BookFinder.com.

flexible! Failure to follow the schedule will affect your course grade

Grading

Grading of the course is based on the following:

 Orientation and feedback responses: 20%


 Progress reports: 10%
 Independent study project: 70%
 There is no exam in the course
Project and progress reports

The independent study project is the main document for the course.
Download the document (below), and use it with your word
processor. You will submit it three times: progress reports 1 and 2,
and the final report.
A progress report is simply your independent study document in
progress.

Your course grade will be based on the final report only, but you must
submit the progress reports on due dates (at latest), in order to move
on with the course.

This is your main document for the course. Download it into


your computer (or USB drive, Dropbox etc.), use it with your
word processor, and submit it as a Progress report (1 and 2),
and as a final report for the course.

Orientation to the Course

Read chapter on Genesis in the textbook (or the file in the resource
area), and write your orientation response accordingly.

textbook) and answer the questions:

1. Identify and describe the perspective of the IOT


("Introduction to the Old Testament") authors. What do you
think about that kind of an approach?
2. Define the orientation of IOT, as stated in the book. What do
you think about that kind of an orientation?
3. What are your expectations for the course? Any concerns?
Write about 250-300 words ("one page") in your post.

comment on someone else's post (the assignment will be
marked as done when you have done this).
