Soupe à l'oignon
The soupe a l’oignon is a French dish. The main
ingredients of Soupe de l’Oignon are butter, stock,
onions, flour, dried bread and gruyere cheese.
Interesting Facts
Legend says that the first onion soup was created by
King Louis XV during a hunting trip when all he could
find in his lodge were onions, butter, and champagne.
Although onion soup has been eaten since the 17th
century, it became hugely popular during the 1960s
when traditional French cuisine was introduced to the
US. There are two original versions of this French
soup to date — Parisian and Lyonnais. Throughout
history, they were seen as food for poor people, as
onions were plentiful and easy to grow. But, it is
nowadays regarded as one of the most prized dishes
of French cuisine.
