PREFERENCE

Preference is an expression to state your choice or to show that you like certain Things or Activities MORE than
another. To show this, we normally use the following 4 expressions:

1. like……better than…….
 Things—put NOUN after like and better than.
e.g. - She likes apples better than oranges.
- I like motorcycle better than car.
- They like a book better than a radio.
 Activities—put gerund (V-ing) after like and better than.
e.g. - She likes dancing better than singing.
- I like reading better than writing.
- They like walking better than running.

2. prefer…….to…….
 Things—put NOUN after prefer and to.
e.g. - She prefers apples to oranges.
- I prefer motorcycle to car.
- They prefer a book to a radio.
 Activities—put V-ing after prefer and to.
e.g. - She prefers dancing to singing.
- I prefer speaking to listening.
- They prefer walking to running.

3. would rather……..than………
 Things—put the word have (or other relevant V-1) + NOUN after would rather and only NOUN after than.
e.g. - She would rather have apples than mangoes.
- I would rather get motorcycle than car.
- They would rather have a book than a radio.
 Activities—put the V-1 after would rather and than.
e.g. - She would rather dance than sing.
- I would rather read than write.
- They would rather walk than run.

4. would prefer……rather than……


 Things—put the NOUN after would prefer and rather than.
e.g. - She would prefer apples rather than mangoes.
- I would prefer motorcycle rather than car.
- They would prefer a book rather than a radio.
 Activities—put to + V-1 after would prefer and only V-1 after rather than.
e.g. - She would prefer to dance rather than sing.
- I would prefer to speak rather than listen.
- They would prefer to walk rather than run.
