Link to Musical Score

• Please download the pdf score from:

• Click the link, scroll to ‘Sheet Music’, click ‘1. Within Thy Heart (F major, high voice)’, wait 15
seconds for it to continue to your download and click it!

• If it is possible for you to print the score, or download to an Ipad, I recommend this. It is difficult to
try to read musical scores on phone screens; however, it is not impossible.

Who was Amy Beach?

• Amy Beach (1867-1944) was an American female composer and pianist.

• She was the first successful American female composer of large-scale art
music.

• Her piece ‘Gaelic Symphony’ was the first symphony composed and published
by an American woman.

• She made her concert hall debut at age 16 in Boston’s Music Hall.

• Her music isn’t as well known just for the fact she is a woman, and it was
viewed as ‘appropriate’ during her time.

• She was one of the best during her lifetime for her voice, piano, and chamber
works.

STEP 1: Reading, listening, and
speaking to the text in rhythm
Use the recordings provided below and follow along with your downloaded score.

(a little faster)
Track with metronome Track without metronome

STEP 2: Learning the Melody line

Use the following recordings to assist you in learning the melody. You may try to learn the melody on a neutral syllable
(doo, bee, pah, etc), or you may find a way for your learning style that is easier to try and sing the text as you learn the
pitches and rhythms of the melody.

To note:
1. There are alternate options for some notes in the melody and these tracks follow what is written in the music. On
page 5 second system 2nd measure, the note options are F and A, the track plays the lower of the 2 (F) but, feel free to do
whichever!
2. At the beginning of the song it says ‘Lento con molto espressione.’ this means ‘Slow with much expression’. This
allows a push and pull the tempo which would be helpful to work on in the tracks or with your pianist!

STEP 3: Putting rhythm, melody,
and text together
Use the previous tracks to sing the rhythm, melody, and text together.

6
STEP 4: Singing with the piano line

These recordings include both the vocal track and the piano track. You are able to
hear the melody track while you sing with the piano accompaniment.

More musical (I recommend): Easier to follow with (use at first):

Slower/Quicker moments - More expressive More straight forward,

track without metronome quicker track without metronome (about 80 bpm)

Due to the tempo changes, there is no track with a metronome so be on the lookout for those changes!

7
STEP 5: Singing with the piano line
only
This recording takes away the vocal line melody. This step will challenge your melodic
independence.

More musical (I recommend): Easier to follow with (use at first):

Slower/Quicker moments - More expressive More straight forward,

track without metronome quicker track without metronome (about 80 bpm)

Due to the tempo changes, there is no track with a metronome so be on the lookout for those changes!

STEP 6: Practice and then
record/submit your audition
Practice with these tracks until you are secure in your learning and memory.

Have fun!
