Design steps for Tension and Compression Springs:

STEP: 1 Select suitable material

Material type – Steel
Select the values for shear stress and Modulus of Rigidity from PSG 7.100.

STEP: 2, 3, 4, 5 Calculate Wire Diameter (d) PSG 7.100

Where,
Spring index C - usually taken as 5 to 10
Diameter of coil – D
4 C−1 0.615
Shear Stress Factor, K s = +
4 C−4 C

STEP : 6 Calculate the Outer Diameter (Do) = D + d

STEP : 7 Calculate Number of Coils (n) by using Deflection. PSG 7.100

STEP :8 Decide the end conditions and select the number of inactive coils. (PSGDB Pg.7.101)

STEP : 9 Calculate Free length and Solid length of Spring. (PSGDB Pg.7.101)

STEP : 10 Check the Spring for Buckling. (PSGDB Pg.7.101)

STEP : 11 Check the Natural Frequency. (PSGDB Pg.7.101)

STEP :12 Compute Energy stored in Spring.

STEP :13 Compute Spring Stiffness.
