The Power of The Tongue
The Power of The Tongue
It is important for all of us who want to have an effective prayer life to carefully watch
our speech.
According to research, average women speak 16,215 words per day and men speak
15,669 words per day. Although if you google it the first thing you will see is that
women speak 20,000 words per day while men only 7,000 but it was proven incorrect
and baseless by legitimate or real researchers. I guess the real answer is it depends on
each person but I think it is proven that more women speak more than men and only
few are vice versa. That’s why in the Bible it was only written “the nagging wife”, no
nagging husband. But of course there are nagging husbands too but fewer compared to
women.
What are the effects of our negative spoken words in different aspects of our
life? (What happens when we speak negative words?)
1.) Spiritual:
a. Separation with God (when we speak evil) - What our tongue produces has
eternal implications, for it reveals what is in our heart. Jesus said that “the
good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man
brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him” (Matthew 12:35).
- Isaiah places words on par (same level) with actions for displaying a sinful
heart
Isaiah 59:2-3 But your wickedness has separated you from your God,
And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood
And your fingers with wickedness [with sin, with injustice, with
wrongdoing];
Your lips have spoken lies,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
b. We invite judgment to be upon us - “Men will have to give account on the day
of judgment for every careless word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). In and
of ourselves, we are utterly unable to “tame the tongue” because “it is a restless
evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).
A tongue under control is a mark of the Spirit’s power. Apart from accepting
Jesus’ atonement on the cross, we will be judged according to our words: “For
by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned”
(Matthew 12:37).
2.) Physical
In order to take Proverbs 18:21 (The tongue has the power of life and death, and those
who love it will eat its fruit.) literally – that the tongue can cause physical life and
death – we do not need to make it hard for our imagination. Words create actions,
good and bad. A judge or jury, by simply saying a word, can cause a person to be
killed or to live. Words often save lives: a doctor advises surgery, a weatherman
issues a tornado warning, a counselor gives hope to a suicidal person. Conversely,
words can also kill: murders are often initiated because of arguments or verbalized
hatred. In the sense of causing action, then, the tongue does indeed have the power
of life and death. Like bullying, even cyber bullying have caused thousands of
suicide.
3.) Emotional
- Emotions are powerfully affecting, yet they are vulnerable to injury. James
describes the tongue as “a fire” (James 3:6) – and who has not been burned by
it?
- Proverbs 15:4 describes a “healing” tongue as “a tree of life.” As much as love
is an action, what would romance be without words?
- Encouragement often comes through spoken words. So does discouragement.
“Reckless words pierce like a sword” (Proverbs 12:18).
- The wound is emotional, and it is deep. What we say can have a profound
effect on others.
Your tongue is closely related to your heart, body, soul, and spirit. For example, if
Satan has control of your heart, he has control of your tongue:
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they
defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; These are the things which defile a
man...(Matthew 15:18-20)
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good;
and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil;
for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luke 6:45)
1. Satan uses the things you say to cause a breach (opening) into your spirit:
o A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the
spirit. (Proverbs 15:4)
o By evil communication you create a breach through which Satan enters to war
against your spirit.
a. Covetous Words:
- Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye
have; for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5)
b. Idle G.argos(useless/careless) Words: Idle words are things we say carelessly,
without concern for their impact on others.
- But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account
thereof in the day of judgment. (Matthew 12:36)
c. Foolish Words:
- The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of fools
feedeth on foolishness. (Proverbs 15:14)
d. Unprofitable Words:
- Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they
strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
(2 Timothy 2:14)
g. Flattering Words:
- For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of
covetousness; God is witness. (I Thessalonians 2:5)
1 Thessalonians 2:5 AMP
For as you well know, we never came with words of flattery nor with a pretext for
greed—God is our witness.
Greed – power, money, material things, love (attention/KSP/insecurities), position
h. Enticing Words:
- And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
(Colossians 2:4)
- Colossians 2:4 AMP
I say this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive [but thoroughly
deceptive] arguments.
j. Vain Words:
- They speak vanity every one with his neighbor. (Psalms 12:2)
k. Proud Words:
- ...with their mouth they speak proudly. (Psalms 17:10)
l. Boastful Words:
- How long shall they utter and speak hard things? And all the workers of iniquity
boast themselves. (Psalms 94:4)
o. Lies:
- The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born,
speaking lies. (Psalms 58:3)
- Let the lying lips be put to silence, which speak grievous things proudly and
contemptuously against the righteous. (Psalms 31:18)
p. Slandering Words:
- Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's
son. (Psalms 50:20)
s. Talebearing Words:
- A talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
(Proverbs 11:13)
t. Backbiting Words:
- He that backbiteth not with his tongue..(Psalms 15:3)
u. Dissembling Words: dissemble – to hide under false appearance, fake, pretending
to be asleep, to be rich, to be whatever you want others to think about you…
nagrurunungan-runungan, pabibo because pride
- Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. (Psalms 50:19)
When David realized the great battle with the tongue, he cried out: What shall be
given unto thee? Or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? (Psalms 120:3)
The only way to win the battle with the tongue is by application of spiritual
counter strategies given in God's Word.
The first step in gaining victory over the tongue is to get your heart right with God:
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they
defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; These are the things which defile a
man. (Matthew 15:18-20)
Your mouth will speak what is in your heart. If your heart is not right, your tongue will
reveal it. Use your tongue to get your heart right with God:
Recognize you will be held responsible for the words that come out of your mouth:
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account
thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
(Matthew 12:36-37)
And he saith unto him, out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant...
(Luke 19:22)
As long as you believe your tongue is not important, you will not gain control
of it. You must realize your conversation reflects on the Gospel of Jesus:
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel of Christ... (Philippians 1:27)
Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they
among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. (Psalms 126:2)
5) You can actually win others to the Lord Jesus Christ by your conversation:
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the
word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While
they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. (I Peter 3:1-2)
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these
cometh of evil. (Matthew 5:37)
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear; slow to speak, slow to
wrath. (James 1:19)
If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine
hand upon thy mouth. (Proverbs 30:32)
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out
evil things. (Proverbs 15:28)
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips
is esteemed a man of understanding. (Proverbs 17:28)
8) Separate Yourself.
Separate Yourself from those who cannot control their tongue.
Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of
knowledge. (Proverbs 14:7)
If you control your tongue, it will put to shame those who falsely accuse you:
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they
may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. (I Peter 3:16)
With God's help, you can control the tongue. But YOU must take action to control
your own tongue.
a) For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it
altogether. (Psalms 139:4)
b) ...the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. (Proverbs 16:21)
c) The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
(Proverbs 16:23)
d) A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth; and a word spoken in due
season, how good is it! (Proverbs 15:23)
e) Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. (II Peter
3:11)
f) A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. (Proverbs
25:11)
g) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
(Proverbs 21:23)
h) He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; but he that openeth wide his
lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3)
16) Claim These Promises:
Hear; For I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right
things. For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my
lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or
perverse in them. (Proverbs 8:6-8)
In Proverbs 10, we find seven characteristics of the lips of the righteous. When we
refrain from critical and negative speech, we must replace it with uplifting, positive,
and grace-filled words. Think about the words you speak. Are they uplifting and do
they bring life to others? Ask God to help you evaluate your speech as you read these
verses:
1. A fountain of life - “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence
overwhelms the mouth of the wicked” (verse 11).
2. Discerning lips - “Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for
the back of him who lacks judgment” (verse 13).
3. Holds his tongue - “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds
his tongue is wise” (verse 19).
4. Choice silver - “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the
wicked is of little value” (verse 20).
5. Nourishes many - “The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack
of judgment” (verse 21).
6. Brings forth wisdom - “The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a
perverse tongue will be cut out” (verse 31).
7. Knows what is fitting - “The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the
mouth of the wicked only what is perverse” (verse 32).
Always remember that our words will expose who we really are, our faith and how
much we believe in God as we confess what we believe, it will reveal and expose
what’s inside of us – our hearts.
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil
person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his
mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
2 Tim. 2:14-16; 23
14 Remind the people of these facts, and solemnly charge them in the presence of
God to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good, and [upsets and
undermines and] ruins [the faith of] those who listen. 15 Study and do your best to
present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be
ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth. 16 But
avoid all irreverent babble and godless chatter [with its profane, empty words], for it
will lead to further ungodliness,
23 But have nothing to do with foolish and ignorant speculations [useless disputes
over unedifying, stupid controversies], since you know that they produce
strife and give birth to quarrels.
