Young’s modulus experiment :

Objective:
Our aim is to determine the young’s modulus of elasticity of the
material of a given wire

Theory:
Young’s modulus is an elastic constant which describes a certain
kind of elastic behavior . In simple terms, it indicates how much a
body will stretch or compress when it is subjected to a longitudinal
force. It is the ratio between the longitudinal stress (force per unit
area , just like a pressure) and the resulting strain (fractional
change of length) for example, if a wire were subjected to a uniform
tension, the stress would be the tension force divided by the wire’s
cross-sectional area .the strain would be the amount the wire
stretched divided by its original length . Young’s modulus for the
material
of the wire is the stress divided by the strain :

1-Stress:= force/area
2-strain= ^L/L

Apparatus:
*young’s modulus of elasticity
*hangers
*weight
*meter rod
*micrometer

Procedure:
1-firstly , determine radius of wire and then length of the wire
2-hang the know mass on the wire and measure the new length of
the wire L then determine ^L extension for a load
3-the experiment was repeated using different mass and put the
result in table

4-plotting the graph between ^L on y axes and m on x axes ,draw

the best line and find its slope
5-calculate the slope from plot and then find young’s modulus
constant
