Instruction: Attempt all the exercises.

Exercise I
Given the following scalar functions.
(a) f (x, y) = 2xy − 4xy 2 , ⃗v = ⟨1, 3⟩, P = (2, 3).
(b) f (x, y) = 3 cos x sin y, ⃗v = ⟨1, 2⟩, P = (π/3, π/6).
(c) f (x, y) = 3x − 5y, ⃗v = ⟨1, 1⟩, P = (4, 2).
(d) f (x, y) = x2 − 2x − y 2 + 4y, ⃗v = ⟨1, 1⟩, P = (1, 2).
Then, provide the parametric equations of the following directional tangent lines
to f at the given point P .
(1) lx (t).
(2) ly (t).
(3) l⃗u .

Exercise II

In Exercise I, find the equation of the normal line to f at the given point P .
Exercise III
In Exercise I, deduce the two points that are 2 units from the surface f at the
given point P .
Exercise IV
In Exercise I, deduce the equation of the tangent plane to f at the given point
P.
Exercise V
Use the gradient to find the followings.
(a) The equation of the normal line to the surface at the given point P .
(b) The equation of the plane tangent to the surface at the given point P .

Given the following functions, determine the Hessian matrix evaluated at each
critical point.
(a) f (x, y) = 21 x2 + 2y 2 − 8y + 4x.
(b) f (x, y) = x2 + 4x + y 2 − 9y + 3xy.
(c) f (x, y) = x2 + 3y 2 − 6y + 4xy.

(d) f (x, y) = x2 +y 2 +1 .

(e) f (x, y) = x2 + y 3 − 3y + 1.

(f ) f (x, y) = 31 x3 − x + 13 y 3 − 4y.
(g) f (x, y) = x2 y 2 .
(h) f (x, y) = x4 − 2x2 + y 3 − 27y − 15.
