Greet and identify client by two identifiers.

Explain the procedure to the client.
 Instruct client to void if necessary.
2.
 Ensure pain medication is given if prescribed by doctor.
Arrange article and provide privacy.
3.
Check patient vital signs.

Assist client to:
a. Loosen / remove clothing.
5. b. Shave the site if necessary.
c. Cover the client with draw sheet if necessary.
Assist client into correct position.
a. Supine for sterna puncture.

b. Lateral position with upper knee flexed – for iliac crest puncture.
Expose the site for puncture.
7.
Place a protective pad / incopad below the identified area of body.
8.
During procedure

Wash hands and wear mask.


9.
Prepare the equipment: -
 Open the bone marrow / dressing set.
10.  Pour solution.
 Add sterile slide, syringe, needle, scalpel blade and bone marrow needle.
Swab top of LA vial with spirit swab.
11.  Assist the doctor to draw out the LA.
Be with the patient throughout the procedure.

b. Maintain client’s position

c. Inform client each step of procedure.
d. Encourage client to relax – breath in and out normally.
Anticipate doctor’s needs.
a. Give the equipments or supplies.
13. b. Assist and ensure that bone marrow is collected into the specimen
container.
Once the physician removes the needle, apply pressure over the puncture
site for 5-10mts, by using sterile cotton swab or gauze piece until the

bleeding stops.
Assist and apply pressure dressing to puncture site.
15.
After procedure

Instruct the client not to wash or wet the area for 24 hours.
16.
Make the client comfortable.
17.  Instruct the client that he may be mobile after 4-6 hours.
Label the specimens correctly and dispatch the specimens with the
18. completed request form as soon as possible.
Clear the equipments.
19.
Wash hands.
20.
Record in progress note and report.
21.
Monitor vital signs every 30 minutes for 4-6 hours or until stable
