Conditionals Rewrite Rules
• Type 1
• If the sentence is Imperative (starting with a verb)we use the 1st
conditional.
1. study hard. You pass.
Type 1 If you study hard, you’ll pass.
2. Tidy up your room, you can go out to play football with friends.
Type1 If don’t tidy up your room, you won’t go out and play
football with your friends.
• Type 2: if the verb in the first clause is in present tense we use the
2nd conditional.
1. She eats junk food. She gains weight.
Type2 If she didn’t eat junk food, she wouldn’t gain weight.
2. she doesn’t eat junk. She doesn’t gain weight.
Type2 If she ate junk food, she would gain weight.
Mixed conditionals
Type1
• Present situation past consequence
• 2nd conditional 3rd conditional
• If + past simple, …. Would/ wouldn’t + have + past participle
Type 2
• Past situation present consequence
• 3rd conditional 2nd conditional
• If + past perfect, …… would/ wouldn’t + infinitive.
• For example
• You didn't make an appointment, so we can't see you tomorrow.
If you had made an appointment, we could see you tomorrow.
• She didn't take the medication that’s why she's ill now.
If hadn’t taken the medication, she wouldn’t be ill now.
• Remember that with all conditional sentences, you change the sentence
from negative to positive and vice versa.
