PROJECT WORK - I WANT TO BE A TOURIST

Brazil is the biggest country in South America, the meaning of its

name is "Red as an Ember”, and it was attributed to the country, as a
result of the abundance of “pau-brasil” in the region when the Portuguese
navy discovered the new world. The biggest country in South America has
214,3 million people and a giant culture, unique in each of the 26 states.
The Brazilian history is quite long, however, the recorded history
goes back to the time when the Portuguese navy, led by Pedro Álvares
Cabral, discovered the territory on April 22, 1500. For a long time under
the Portuguese scepter, Brazil was seen as a source of valuable resources, such as wood, sugar
and gold, and colonies were established along the coast. The Brazilian economy saw a great
growth when the Portuguese royal family left Portugal, due to the invasion of the Napoleonic
troops. On September 7, 1822, the Portuguese prince D. Pedro declared Brazil's independence
from Portugal, and became His Imperial Majesty, D. Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil. Since
independence, the country has seen economic, industrial, political and social development, has
become a republic, and nowadays, faces a social crisis, and is trying to recover from a strong
political crisis, caused by Ex- President Jair Bolsonaro who left office last January 1, 2023, the
day the new president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva takes office.
As a multicultural country there is a diversity of music, legends, food, religions, dances,
sports and literature.
In the music area exist a diversity of types of music like: “forró”; “funk”; “pagode”;
“lambada”; “sertanejo”; “bossa nova”; and of course the most popular type of brazilian music the
“samba”. From this area we would like to talk about Anitta, she is a Brazilian singer, songwriter,
dancer, and actress. She was born on March 30, 1993, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Anitta first
gained popularity in Brazil in 2013 with her debut single "Show das Poderosas," which became a
hit and earned her a contract with Warner Music. Since then, Anitta has released several albums
and singles, including collaborations with international artists such as Madonna, Snoop Dogg,
and Cardi B. She has also won numerous awards for her music, including Best Brazilian Act at
the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and attended the Met Gala for the third
time this year.
The Brazilian novels and movies are known all over the world, one of the brazilian most
famous actresses is Bruna Marquezine born on August 4, 1995, in Duque de Caxias, Rio de
Janeiro. She began her acting career at a young age, appearing in commercials and TV shows in
Brazil. Her breakout role came in 2010 when she played the character Lurdinha in the Brazilian
soap opera "Salve Jorge". Since then, she has become one of Brazil's most popular actresses,
appearing in numerous TV shows, movies, and theater productions. She has also gained
international recognition, working on projects with Hollywood stars such as Kevin Spacey and
Keanu Reeves. Besides acting, Marquezine is known for her philanthropic work and advocacy for
social causes, such as women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental protection.
Winner of 5 World Cups, Brazil is well known for its soccer players, especially the King of
Soccer Pelé whose birth name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was born on October 23,
1940, in the state of Minas Gerais. Pelé’s talent was recognized at a young age, and he began
playing for the Santos soccer club in São Paulo when he was just 15 years old. He quickly
became a star player and helped lead Santos to numerous victories in the 1950s and 1960s. He
also played for the Brazilian national team, winning three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, and
1970. He scored a total of 1281 goals during his career, which is still the record for the most
goals scored by a single player in official matches. He was also known for his humble personality
and his advocacy for social justice issues. He has received numerous awards throughout his
career, including being named a United Nations ambassador for ecology and the environment in
1992. Unfortunately, Pelé died at the age of 82 on December 29, 2022 in São Paulo, due to
multiple organ failure, a complication of colon cancer. Today, Pelé is considered a cultural icon in
Brazil and a symbol of the country’s love for soccer.
Brazilian models also stand out in the international world, such as Gisele Bündchen is a
Brazilian supermodel and actress who has achieved worldwide fame for her work in the fashion
industry. She was born on July 20, 1980, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Bündchen has graced the
cover of countless magazines and has walked the runway for top fashion designers such as
Versace, Chanel, and Dolce & Gabbana. In addition to her modeling work, Bündchen has also
acted in films and TV shows. She appeared in the movie “Taxi” in 2004 and played a small role in
“The Devil Wears Prada” in 2006. She is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations
Environment Programme and has supported various environmental causes throughout her
career. Gisele has attended the biggest fashion event, the MET Gala, and has worked with
numerous designers.
Brazilian literature is also quite varied, and we can highlight Joaquim Maria Machado de
Assis was a Brazilian writer widely regarded as one of the most significant literary figures of
Brazil and one of the greatest writers of the Portuguese language. He is known for his innovative
writing styles and his exploration of complex themes. Machado de Assis was born in 1839, in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in poverty. He worked as typesetter, a proofreader, and a civil
servant before becoming a writer. He began his literary career as a poet, but he is best known for
his novels, short stories, and essays. His writing style is characterized by its subtlety, irony, and
psychological insight. His works often deal with the themes of social class, race, and gender, and
he was particularly interested in the psychology of power and domination. His famous novels
include “Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas”, “Dom Casmurro”, and “O Alienista”. His
contributions to Brazilian literature and the Portuguese language have been widely recognized.
He was a co-founder of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and his works continue to be studied
and celebrated by scholars and readers alike.
The cuisine is also very diversity, dishes such as “feijoada”; “coxinha”; “brigadeiro”;
“cuscuz”; “pastel de feira”; “pão de queijo”; “açaí” and many others are typical.
The cultures of the indigenous Indians, Africans, and Portuguese have together formed
the modern Brazilian way of life. The Indian population is now statistically small, but
Tupí-Guaraní, the language of many Brazilian Indians, continues to strongly influence the
Brazilian Portuguese language.
Other Indian contributions to Brazilian culture are most apparent in the Amazon basin.
African influences on the Brazilian way of life are strongest along the coast between the
Northeast and Rio de Janeiro, they include traditional foods, religions, and popular music and
dance, especially the samba.
In Brazil folklore is very prominent, containing many myths with several nonexistent beings. We
separate some of the most famous Brazilian myths: “saci pererê”; “iara”; “curupira” and ”mula
sem cabeça”.
To complete, Brazil is a beautiful country to visit due to its beaches, monuments and
cities, full of colors and fun and we all think that is one of the wonders of the world.
