Session 6 E-Bus Fleet Performance Scenarios and Optimisation - Batch 6
Organiser
P’ in our name stands for triple bottom line sustainability of people, profit and planet that we want to bring in all
our internal functioning, projects we do, and industries we support. It also keeps us prompt, progressive and
partnership valuing. Manifold represent abstraction of complex problem to smaller dimension, still preserving
elements which matters and are available to influence/control and also measure the system dynamics. We are Certification Partner
‘small data’ company and take pride in collecting and analysing most relevant data to help our clients with
decisions and actions.
Session 06
Advantages and Challenges of Mixed
Fleet Operations
• 1 to 8 hrs depending on the charging strategy • 5 to 10 min. of refuelling, but fuelling station is shared and
might result in queues
Fuelling • Need to plan for charging aligned to the schedule and • Comparatively longer range and availability of refuelling
battery capacity opportunity en-route
• Each route schedule to account for charging • Flexibility in running on any route
Skilled in
• Swapping buses for charging • Skilled in ICE maintenance (as per items in maintenance
Manpower
• Accommodating charging in operating schedule section – ICE Bus)
• Monitoring the charging process
Dead-Milage • On-site fuelling cuts down dead milage • Off-site fuelling increases dead milage
✓ Seasonal variation
✓ Battery aging
✓ Schedules with varying frequencies
✓ Power outage
✓ Bus breakdown
✓ Charger breakdown
✓ Route blockages
✓ Abnormally high passenger demands
✓ Abnormally high energy routes
✓ New technology / regulation deployment
✓ Drastic upgradation of entire fleet
✓ Depot operation staff strikes

• Throughout the vehicle operation, the battery is subjected to charge – discharge cycles accompanied by high – low
temperature cycles
• Each cycle leaves a tiny but permanent change in the battery internals, which culminates into battery ageing
• The number of cycles accumulated has a direct relation to State of Health (SoH) of battery
• Over time, this leads to either or both of the following,
o Reduction in battery peak power capacity, limiting the vehicle performance
o Reduction in battery energy capacity, limiting the vehicle range per charge

1x 1.2x,1.3x … ?
Breakdown of one bus can cause:
• Passenger stranded
• Overloading of next bus on the route
• Loss of revenue
May need
✓ Spare bus
✓ Reallocation from another route
May need
✓ Extra Charger
✓ Spare time on another charger to be reallocated
AA BB
R1 R2 , R3, R4 ??
May need
✓ Re-routing of existing buses on the route, retaining as may passenger stops as possible
✓ Combining with schedule of other neighboring routes
1x 1.2x,1.3x … ?
High passenger demand can cause;
• Overloading on a few particular routes
• Delays in the buses plying on a few particular routes
• Affect headways and potential loss of revenue opportunities
May need
✓ Extra buses
✓ Reallocation from another route
Need to consider the outlier route separate from rest of the routes for,
✓ Energy requirement
✓ Charging schedules
✓ No. of buses

New Technology / Regulation Deployment
Illustration: 1. What if fast recharge batteries become available
in market ? • The decision will depend on several
factors such as
Flow batteries – Refilling of electrolytes o Market availability,
o Cost
o Infrastructure capacity to
accommodate new technology
(Grid + PT)
o Flexibility to accommodate new
technology
o Skill levels
• It will affect current deployment of fleet,
• Increase complexities and
• May induce new process of service
planning
✓ Need to account for regional deployment roadmaps and climate change pressures

Model one disruption over the base case and provide mitigation plan (using EVFleetPlanner© tool)
To Do:
1. Identify the effects of one of the listed disruptions/deviations on the base case operating
plan and provide mitigation plan or recommendations.
2. Using the Excel tool provided and modifying it as required for either manual scheduling
or semi-automated, please quantify the effects of disruption
3. Using the same modified excel tool from #2, also establish the effectiveness of
proposed risk mitigation plan
4. Prepare a short presentation for project reviews with evaluation panel
5. After the project evaluation, submit this presentation as a pdf report in LMS
✓ As per chosen base case / disruptions, if the tool requires customisation, participants
can ‘Copy’ the sheets along with formulae and paste in another excel for further use.
✓ If you select all and copy + paste into another new sheet, it will not be locked, and
formulae get copied
