EXERCISE NO. (1) )1( ‫تصميمات الرى‬ Canal Lining

1- A channel reach is to be realigned, canal discharge 30 m3/s, canal width

is 10.0m, side slope 2(H): 1(V). The channel passed in soil with gradation
D85=25mm, D50=18mm, D15=2mm, manning coefficient (n)=0.035.
Estimated channel slope is 0.0016 and flow is uniform (SF=1.3) and
Specific weight of rock =2.7.
a. It is required to design the suitable lining type for channel
protection.
b. Draw a sketch shown the designed lining type and its specifications

2- A channel reach is to be realigned, canal discharge 130 m3/s, canal width

is 6.0m, side slope 2(H): 1(V). The channel passed in soil with gradation
D85=20mm, D50=15mm, D15=3mm, manning coefficient (n)=0.035.
Estimated channel slope is 0.0016 and flow is uniform (SF=1.3 and
Specific weight of rock =2.7. There is stone quarry near the site.
a. It is required to design the suitable lining type for channel
protection.
b. Draw a sketch shown the designed lining type and its specifications

3- Solve the previous problem assuming that there is no available stone

quarry near to the site.

4- Evaluate the existing rock riprap lining used for a roadside channel given
the following data.

Given
Shape: Trapezoidal b=2.0 m, side slope 2H:1V
Soil: D85=20mm, D50=15mm, D15=3mm
Used rock riprap lining: lining thickness=250 mm, and D50=70 mm with no
filter. (SF=1.3, SS=2.7).
Grade: 0.15% (longitudinal channel slope) & manning coefficient (n)=0.035
Flow : 10 m3/s
