National symbols
The Portuguese flag
The national flag is divided vertically into two colors - dark green and red - with the green
next to the riser or mast. In the center, superimposed on the color union, it has the
national coat of arms with white edges on the yellow armillary sphere and black outlines.
Shield of Portugal
Meaning of symbols and colors:The five blue shields (escudetes or quinas) symbolize the
five Muslim kings that King Alfonso Enríquez defeated in the battle of Ourique.
The points inside the shields represent the five wounds of Christ. Counting the points and
the shields add up to thirty: the coins that Judas received for betraying Christ..
Traditionally, the seven castles represent the victories of the Portuguese against their
enemies and also symbolize the Kingdom of Algarve
